Job Market: Top Accounting Students Optimistic The fall 2004 recruiting season is here and there is cause for optimism. Per a spring 2004 survey performed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 59.4 percent of the 209 employers responding to the survey indicated plans to hire the same number, or more, new college graduates than were hired in the fall of A more recent survey conducted by the authors of this article indicates that accounting students themselves are optimistic. We distributed survey instruments to 1,000 Beta Alpha Psi students at the Annual National Meeting in Orlando, Florida in August of 2004 and over 350 were completed. The data obtained indicates that your classmates are generally positive on the accounting profession, the accounting major, the accounting job market and their university s job-search services. About the Subjects The average participant in this survey had a grade point average of 3.66 on a 4.00 scale and was 22.6 years old. There were significantly more women (69%) in the survey than men (31%). Virtually all of the students plan to take the CPA exam (93%) and most plan to attend graduate school (77%). Of those planning graduate school, 60% said they will pursue the Master in Accounting, 10% a Master of Taxation, 23% an MBA, and 7% other forms of graduate education (such as Law School or PhD programs). Overall Results Participants were asked to respond to the twelve questions shown in Exhibit 1using the following fivepoint scale: 1 = Strongly disagree with the statement. 4 = Somewhat agree with the statement. 2 = Somewhat disagree with the statement. 5 = Strongly agree with the statement. 3 = Neutral or undecided. The responses are summarized in Exhibit 1 by Region.
Exhibit 1 Students Perceptions of Job Market/ Career by Region* 2 Region 1 Region 2 Region 3 Region 4 Region 5 Nationwide No. Statement (n=47) (n=90) (n=122) (n=43) (n=54) (n=356) 1 I am optimistic about the prospects for finding a permanent accounting job with opportunity for advancement. 2 Compared to when I started college, the demand for accountants is higher. 3 If I were asked to advise a fellow student on the choice of a major, I would recommend a major in accounting. 4 I am willing to move several times to advance in my accounting career. 5 I plan to remain in my present career path for at least 5 years. 6 I am concerned that the demands of the workplace will prevent me from fulfilling my responsibilities to my family. 7 I believe my best chance for finding a job in accounting is through the oncampus interview process. 8 The Accounting Faculty at my school is actively involved in helping students find jobs after graduation. 9 The Career Services (Job Placement) Office at my school does a good job of bringing potential employers to our school. 10 Sarbanes-Oxley will increase the demand for public accountings services. 11 Sarbanes-Oxley will increase the demand for internal auditors. 12 Accounting frauds such as Enron and WorldCom caused me to reconsider my decision to major in accounting *Region Key: Region 1 = Northeast and MidAtlantic: ME, VT, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA NJ, DE, and MD. Region 2 = Southeast: VT, WV, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, AK, LA, AND FL. Region 3 = Midwest: ND, SD, NE, KS, MN, IO, MO, WI, IL, IN, MI, OH. Region 4 = Southwest: TX, OK, NM, and AZ Region 5 = West: HI, AK,, WA, OR, CA, ID, NV, MT, WY, UT, and CO. Job Market Perceptions The mean response of for Statement No. 1 indicates a high overall level of optimism concerning the job market. This belief is supported by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accounting and audit jobs will grow at an annual rate of 10% to 20% through The online job resume bank for the American Bankers Association states, Though many industry firms have reported little or no job growth recently, CareerBank.com has noticed a continuing increase in the demand for talented accounting and finance individuals. 3 Accounting students can take comfort via such upbeat and
continuing news on the improving job market. Consistent with this improving outlook, students believe job 3 prospects are brighter now than when they started college (Statement No. 2 mean 3.744). Students would also recommend accounting as a major to their fellow students (mean of 4.132). As is shown in Exhibit 1, this optimism is not peculiar to any specific region of the country. Optimism is the norm nationwide. To determine what types of jobs accounting students are interested in pursuing, we asked participants to rank seven (7) different types of employers by assigning a 1 to most desirable, a 2 to second most desirable, etc. Exhibit 2 presents rank-ordered results. Exhibit 2 Student Preferences: By Type of Employer (Ranked from most desirable to least desirable) Ranking Type of Employer Mean Ranking Score (n=356) 1 Large Public Accounting Firm Medium/Small Public Accounting 2.44 Firm 3 Corporate Financial Accounting Internal Auditing Government Accounting Cost/Managerial Accounting Other accounting/ non-accounting employer 6.31 Approximately 74% of the students chose public accounting as their primary choice for employment. Students rating other accounting and non-accounting employers high indicated interest in banking, information systems, academics, investing, consulting, law, and other accounting and accounting-related careers. Due to high turnover rates, public accounting firms are often the most visible accounting employers on campus. To maintain campus presence, public accounting firms provide speakers for campus events, invite student groups in for office visits, put considerable effort into recruiting, and offers some of the highest starting salaries. Perhaps all this activity explains why public accounting was the number one job choice for the students participating in this survey. Students preferring public accounting were more optimistic about finding employment with opportunity for advancement than students who indicated other employment preferences (mean of vs mean for
students preferring different types of employers). Students planning a career in public accounting also believe 4 more strongly in the future of internal auditing (4.286 vs ). Both of these responses appear to be consistent with analyses that suggest that Sarbanes-Oxley will increase the demand for accountants. The Denver Business Journal reported in July 2004 the accounting industry in Denver is experiencing a boom in hiring. 4 The same journal reported that Sarbanes-Oxley is a major factor in that job growth. Kim Wallin, Chair of the Institute of Management Accountants, has stated that the reforms required by Sarbanes-Oxley will not only make our careers more rewarding; they are good for American business, the investment community, and our entire society. 5 The good news for you is that accounting students, via the accounting job market, are among the primary beneficiaries of the reform movement. Affect of Accounting Firm Experience Professors often advise students to gain real-world experience before graduation. Having directly supervised over 100 internships over the past five years, the authors believe that the benefits of pre-graduation work experience are substantial. Chief among them are that the work experience serves to: a. Confirm your choice of major and career. b. Enhance your confidence that you have what it takes. c. Start your professional network building. With so much on-campus and off-campus attention on accounting work experience, we addressed the matter in our survey. Exhibit 3 presents data on students with accounting firm work experience versus students without accounting firm work experience. Exhibit 3 Affect of Accounting Firm Work Experience Category Students with no accounting firm work experience. 222 Students with accounting firm work experience. 134 # of Students Full Time Job Offers % with Full Time Offer % %
5 Per Exhibit 3, students with pre-graduation accounting firm work experience were nearly four times more likely to have a full-time job offer prior to graduation. Other data we collected indicates that students with accounting firm experience expect a starting salary approximately $1000 higher than is expected by students without such experience. Based on our experience with student internships and other accounting work assignments, this expectation is totally realistic. We advise students to seek internship and other accounting work experiences prior to graduation. Salary, Overtime, and Travel The salary issue is one of the biggest issues as you seek employment. How much will I make? How much should I ask for? How much should I expect? Exhibit 4 provides information on what your classmates are thinking along these lines along with the average offer amounts by category of employer. Exhibit 4 Expected Entry-Level Accounting Salaries Primary choice of have many participants (n) = Expected Starting Salary = Average of Offers in Hand and No. of Offers (n) = Category of Employer Large Public Accounting Firms 165 $44,586 $44,183 n = 31 Medium/Small Public Accounting Firm 79 $42,215 $39,368 n = 19 Internal Audit 28 $43,111 $45,000 n = 1 Corporate Accounting 9 $ $40,750 n = 4 Government 20 $39,700 $30,000 n = 3 Students expect 2004 salaries to exceed salaries for Readers can take encouragement in that the average salary offer for the 85 students with an offer in hand (at the time of the survey) was $41,636. Large public accounting firms have historically offered the highest salaries and per Exhibit 3, this remains true. The number of full-time offers to students by public accounting firms (3) is consistent with the strong campus presence and internship opportunities of these large firms. There were only a limited number of other full-time offers but, for interested readers, Exhibit 4 presents the limited data.
Students were asked the maximum number of (1) weekly overtime hours, and (2) overnight travel they 6 would accept. Males in the survey indicated a willingness to work more overtime than females (male mean of hours vs. female mean of hours). There was almost no difference in the maximum amount of overnight travel (males % of work time vs. females %). Overall, students indicated moderate concern about relocation requirements (Statement No. 4 in Exhibit 1) and family responsibilities (Statement No. 6 in Exhibit 1). The overall mean response to Statement No. 4 I am willing to move several times to advance in my accounting career. was (near a neutral response of 3.000). Students who chose public accounting as a primary career choice showed only a slightly higher willingness to move than students choosing careers outside public accounting (mean of vs respectively). We explored this further by partitioning the data by gender. As some might expect, the mean response of males to Statement No. 4 was higher than that of the females (3.407 vs ), but still indicates some resistance to the idea of relocation, even across genders. Females exhibited more concern that their career would interfere with family responsibilities (3.111 mean for males vs mean for females). This difference however, is not statistically significant when we look at the female vs. male difference for students who chose public accounting as their primary career choice. Perhaps women, for whom family responsibilities are often a greater concern, have already made the choice to pursue a career outside of public accounting. Regardless, the overall level of agreement with this question is comparatively low and indicates that in general, accounting students report only a moderate level of concern regarding balance between their work and their personal lives. Affect of Age and Marital Status. At the authors university, there is generally great respect for the non-traditional and more mature student. To test to see if these students have differing perceptions and opinions, we partitioned our data by both age and marital status. Exhibit 5 provides selected information on younger v. more mature students. As the exhibit shows, the more mature students prefer less overtime and travel and a lower percentage of them had full time job offers. The more mature students rated their Career Services offices (Statement No. 9 in Exhibit 1)
lower than did the younger students and this difference was significant at.05. On the other hand, the more 7 mature students more strongly agreed with Statement No. 1 (see Exhibit 1) than did the younger students (and this difference in mean responses was significant at.05. Younger students expressed a stronger preference for working with a large public accounting firm. Analysis of the data by marital status yielded similar results. This is because a higher percentage of the older students discussed in the preceding paragraph are married. Accordingly, married students indicated they would accept maximum weekly overtime and travel of hours and percent respectively, compared to hours of weekly overtime and percent of time out of town overnight for the unmarried students. Exhibit 5 Younger v. More Mature Accounting Students 6 * Category # of Student s Average Age Max. Acceptable Overtime Hours per Week Max. University Services related to Job Search Participants in this survey appear satisfied with the role that their faculty and Career Services office play in assisting in their job searches. Means for Statements 7, 9, and 9 were high at 3.753, and 4135 respectively. Exhibit 6 presents details concerning how frequently your classmates used differing university services and the mean grade assigned to each service. Exhibit 6 Student Use of Job-Search Related Service (Note: Percentage Using is based on the total 356 Students) assigned by Service Service Used Percentage of Mean grade
by: (n) Participants Using using participants On-campus interview % Internships % Mock interview % University-wide career % fairs Resume writing assistance % Exhibit 6 shows resume writing assistance, career fairs, and on-campus interviews as the most frequently used services. While the percentage of students using these services is high, a lot of students forgo these free services. Based on our experience, time spent taking advantage of all of these services is time well spent indeed. Please know that many accounting students find jobs via these services and many also find internships via these services. Conclusion Accounting students report optimism regarding their professional futures. They recognize that recent changes in the regulatory and economic landscape mean that good times are ahead for accountants. Public accounting is the overwhelming first choice for a career path, but students should not overlook other accounting fields. Since a majority of accounting students plan to attend graduate school (77 percent of students in this survey), students planning to forego graduate school must realize that they will be competing in the job market against higher-level degrees. To enhance the probability of finding a job in your primary career choice area, take advantage of all the opportunities before them. You should seek an internship or other pre-graduation accounting work experiences. You should continue to take advantage of on-campus interviews, career fairs, and resume writing assistance. Know that the mock interview is often an effective way to improve your performance in real, on-campus interviews. Finally, make sure that at least one faculty member knows who you are and is willing to strongly recommend you to employers. The future is bright indeed. Best wishes with your job search.
