Networking and Cybersecurity Cluster Summary v v Staff: Anita Nikolich: Cybersecurity & Kevin Thompson: Networking Networking Programs Ø CC*DNI (Campus Cyberinfrastructure Data, Networking, and Innovation) 133 awards made in 3-yr lifetime of program (CC-NIE, CC*IIE) Strong partnership with CNS (Bryan Lyles) FY15 solicitation is active proposals due March 24, 2015 adds DIBBS Ø IRNC (International R&E Network Connections) OISE strong partner 10Gbps/100Gbps network connections linking U.S. to Americas/Asia/Europe FY14 leading to new set of awards early 2015, one more solicitation coming v Cybersecurity Program Ø Transition-to-Practice (TTP) activities in SaTC and CPS Ø FY15 Cybersecurity Innovation in Cyberinfrastucture (CICI) solicitation in clearance Secondary Programs: CyberSEES/HazardSEES & CC*DNI 1

FY15 Solicitation: Cybersecurity Innovation for Cyberinfrastructure (CICI) NSF v Year 1 of program: $11M v Proposals due June 2, 2015 v Anita Nikolich is Lead Program Director v Focus areas: Ø Data Provenance - ~6 awards of $500K Ø Secure Architecture/Design - ~6 awards of $500K Ø Cybersecurity Center of Excellence 1 award v Themes: Data Integrity, Secure Software Defined Networking (SDN), Identity Management, Secure Data Transfer, Secure Cloud v Proofs of Concept/Operational Deployments encouraged 2

Networking Programs in CISE/ACI v Networking as a fundamental layer and underpinning of CI v CC-NIE/CC-IIE (Campus Cyberinfrastructure Network Infrastructure and Engineering): joint with CNS Ø Campus networking upgrade (re-design to sciencedmz at campus border and 10/100Gbps) and innovation program v IRNC International R&E Network Connections: joint with OIA/ISE Ø Scientific discovery as a global collaborative endeavor Ø Provide network connections linking U.S. research with peer networks in other parts of the world Ø Stimulate the deployment and operational understanding of emerging network technology and standards in an international context 3

Zoom (note the different scales: international, national, regional, campus/local) 4

AmLight SDN and OpenWave v 4 x 10G links and two topologies Ø SDN ring: Miami-São PauloChile-Miami 20 Gbps of total capacity Full OpenFlow and network virtualization support Ø MPLS ring: Miami-São PauloMiami 20 Gbps of total capacity Layer 2 support v OpenWave 100 Gbps between São Paulo and Miami Ø Part of the SDN domain Ø Focused on experimentation v v 140 Gbps aggregate capacity expected by June 100G to AL2S from Miami 7 7

1st a quick reminder - Global topology r&e networking (NSF supports a part of this) 8

Regional Optical Networks 9

Its not all about bigger pipes re-architecting the campus border [longer term ~ re-engineering trust relationships] How your campus networking plans fit into the broader cyberinfrastructure strategy for your campus campus CI Plan driving partnerships between scientists and campus IT enabling science and education * end-to-end perspective on networking and performance 10

CC*DNI - Campus Cyberinfrastructure Data, Networking, and Innovation, NSF v Campus Networking program combining with DIBBs for 2015 v v Ø Addressing Campus CI and bridging, directly responsive to ACCI Task Force recommendations Previously called CC-NIE (Campus Cyberinfrastructure Network Infrastructure and Engineering) and CC*IIE NSF12-541/13-530/ Ø network infrastructure improvements at campus level (re-architecting for large data science flows, upgrades within campus and external connectivity) Ø Network integration and applied innovation (e.g. development and experimental deployment of SDN/openflow, transitioning successful results in FIA) Synopsis: CC*DNI integrates campus-level data & networking infrastructure for higher levels of performance, reliability & predictability for science applications & distributed research, with an explicit element supporting models for potential future national scale network-aware data-focused cyberinfrastructure attributes, approaches & capabilities. 11

CC*DNI Program-wide Criteria v Science Drivers v Partnerships between campus CI experts and scientists v Campus Cyberinfrastructure plan Ø plan within which the proposed network infrastructure improvements are conceived, designed, and implemented in the context of a coherent campus-wide strategy and approach to CI Ø Maximum 5-pg supplementary document addressing: Sustainability of proposed work in terms of ongoing operational and engineering costs Refer to solicitation for guidance on technical areas to include such as IPv6, InCommon federation, and IP spoofing Ø See example CI plans from existing awardees at fasterdata.es.net/campusciplanning/ 12

The Science DMZ 13

Example Accomplishments from ACI Networking Programs v v v v (CC-NIE) UMd developing network embedded storage and compute resources via Software Defined Networking (SDN) and exposing services to scientific applications and workflows (CC-NIE) U of Washington campus networking upgrades doubled particle physics data transfers to/from PNNL to 1.4Gbps single flow (Ed Lazowska, PI) (IRNC) 4X capacity improvement (80Gbps aggregate) in connecting Astronomy facilities in Hawaii to US mainland (IRNC) 4X capacity improvement (40 Gbps aggregate) between US and South America LSST may require 100Gbps by

Another Example U of Dayton v Impact at Dayton a high performance connection driven by our NSF strategy of providing DMZ connections for researchers with a specific need. NSF is truly helping the University of Dayton raise the entire harbor for science and engineering work on campus and we have used the prestige of this grant to get the attention of our campus leadership to ensure the continued funding for HPC investments. v Impact on Dayton Partners - Our work bringing up the connections at Central State Univ (Historically Black College) has gone well. Part of our funding supports upgrades at their campus. CSU does not have deep-expertise on networking at their campus, so we sent our engineering staff to supervise the work of contractors in upgrading their fiber and connecting the new DMZ infrastructure the NSF support has truly transformed a chunk of the CSU network into a science-ready environment that has our researchers working collaboratively with their faculty and students. The funding from NSF is making a huge difference for several faculty and students at Central State - They are working on cutting edge projects with Vijay Asari on our campus in the area of "Computer Vision v Thomas Skill, PI (CIO) University of Dayton 15
