4 Welcome to a career where job fatigue is a highlight What drives you as a person? Is it the need to engage with others? Is it the need to stay on top of the game? Or are you passionate about the world outside, and issues of physical activity, health and sustainability? Sport and outdoor recreation can open up a whole range of satisfying and challenging career options. You can study a Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and finish in three years full-time, or combine it with either a Bachelor of Education (Primary or Secondary) or Bachelor of Business and Commerce and make it a four-year full-time double degree. You ll finish uni ready to enter a world where sport is a multi-billion dollar industry, where the tourism market is driven by a thirst for adventure, where developed countries are looking to get their citizens more active, where schools are on the lookout for bright new educators, where physical and outdoor activities and experiences are more diverse and specialised than ever before, and where the sustainability of the environment is a number one priority for our local and global communities. Career options A Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation prepares you for: Sports management, sport and outdoor recreation, ecotourism, adventure travel, sports training and development, recreation and leisure, commercial recreation or health promotion. Combined with Bachelor of Business and Commerce, you can add: Sports administration, tourism, sports marketing, event management, and a wide range of careers relating to disciplines studied in the Business and Commerce degree. Combined with Bachelor of Education (Primary or Secondary), you can add: Primary or secondary teaching with specialist qualifications in physical education and outdoor education or another speciality area such as history, maths or science. Go the extra mile Finishing your bachelors degree doesn t mean that the challenge of study has to end. You might be surprised at how much you ve learned, and want to keep learning more. You might look at becoming more specialised in your qualifications and expertise. Or you might have a project in mind that can only be realised with some further research. Once you complete your undergraduate degree, you can look to progress into honours, masters, and ultimately, doctorate level courses. Undergraduate students can get a taste for research by assisting faculty staff and postgraduate students in various projects. Some of the areas researchers are currently investigating include: Children s active lifestyles in the school community Learning with nature s slow rhythms Walking to school for healthier and sustainable living Transforming playgrounds for learning Walking as recreation, especially in the wild The research conducted by Monash contributes knowledge and ideas that benefit not just you as a student, but the broader community. To learn more about this important role, visit the research homepage for Movement, Environment and Community, at: monash.edu/research/groups/sport/ index.html. 2

Student profile Emily Hough Bachelor of Business and Commerce/Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation Now in the third year of her double degree, Emily Hough is settled into university life, and busy working towards a career in either outdoor recreation or sports management. I think that when you move from school to university it s a big change so there are going to be challenges, but most people are in the same situation so there are lots of people to help you out. Peninsula campus is great, it s a lot more personal than some of the bigger campuses, it s kind of like one big school Emily says. The lecturers/leaders are great; I think that we get to know them more than in other courses. Plus it s great that all the students have a common interest everyone is involved in sport and outdoor recreation outside of uni and that provides motivation for each other. After graduating, Emily hopes to work overseas in the outdoor recreation field, perhaps in the United Kingdom. By combining Sport and Outdoor Recreation with a Business and Commerce degree, she has assured herself of more choices further down the track. I m doing sport management as my business major and hope to move into that later on in my career. I would love to work helping to organise big sporting events. A dream would be helping to organise events such as the Australian Open. 5

For more information on this course, visit monash.edu/humcass/ugrad/dots.php. If you want to combine a love of sport and outdoor recreation with the rewards of a career as an educator, choose the Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Education double degree. You could be the person to nurture a child or adolescent s positive relationship to physical and outdoor activity, especially at a time when children seem to be less active and are experiencing health problems as a consequence. You ll study sport and outdoor recreation simultaneously with studies covering the theory and practice of teaching, and when you finish you ll be qualified to teach either physical education and outdoor education, or physical education or outdoor education plus another discipline in schools.* Of course, you ll also be able to work in a range of positions in the sport and outdoor recreation industries. The sport and outdoor recreation program is designed to give you a deep understanding of the relationships between movement, recreation, health and wellbeing, physical education, leadership and the environment through a combination of class-work and fieldwork components. You ll complete core sport and outdoor recreation units, and choose from units including lifespan physical activity and community wellbeing, fitness and conditioning, expaditionary learning, place and nature studies, camp planning, dance and advanced outdoor recreation practice. The fieldwork and professional placements are designed to reinforce and develop the knowledge and understanding you gain in the classroom. Both the classroom and fieldwork experiences take advantage of the great sporting and outdoor facilities available on or near the Peninsula campus. Fieldwork experiences include wilderness expeditions, sea kayaking, canoeing, and coastal activities such as snorkeling. Professional placements are conducted in community physical activity and wellness, camp planning, and sport education. The education studies give you a comprehensive knowledge of education theory and practice; with practical teaching experience to ensure you graduate as a confident and competent educator. You can select a pathway from one of four streams: primary; secondary (physical education and outdoor education); secondary (physical education and other discipline) secondary (outdoor education and other discipline) 6

9 If you study primary education, you ll focus on teaching and children s learning in a social setting, covering all the key learning areas including arts, English, mathematics, health and physical education, science, sustainability and wellbeing, and technology. Secondary education studies include adolescent learning, curriculum development, assessment, language and literacy, and you will qualify for two teaching specialisms. The physical education and outdoor education stream qualifies you to teach physical education and outdoor education at all levels of secondary schooling. If you choose the multidisciplinary stream your specialisms will be either physical education and one other discipline or outdoor education and one other discipline of biology, accounting, chemistry, computing/it, economics, history, maths, politics, psychology, media studies or one of several other disciplines offered by the faculty. If you re interested in the secondary option you should check the faculty website for information on the prerequisites required for each teaching specialism at edu.au/units/secondary-specialisms. html. The secondary education stream is taught across two campuses, with the majority of secondary education units taken at the Clayton campus, and sport and outdoor recreation units at the Peninsula campus. Both the primary and secondary streams include supervised teaching placements in schools or other appropriate settings, including opportunities for remote or overseas placements. These placements will give you vital teaching experience and draw the theoretical components of your studies together with the practical aspects of teaching. Placements occur throughout the course, and the duration of placements varies as the course progresses, increasing as your skills, knowledge and confidence improve. The course load, and the course fees, are equivalent to 4.25 years of study, however you ll complete the course in four calendar years. Career options: Following registration with VIT, graduates will be qualified as primary or secondary teachers with specialist qualifications in physical education and outdoor education. Alternative secondary teaching methods are also available. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities. Non-teaching careers include sports management, outdoor recreation, sports training and development, recreation and leisure, commercial recreation or tourism. Student profile Sharelle Cameron Current student, Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation/ Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Sharelle Cameron is in her final year of her double degree, and wants to pursue a career in the outdoor education field. I want to combine my two degrees and work with at risk or disadvantaged people, implementing adventure therapy programs, especially on extended wilderness trips says Sharelle. Eventually I will teach Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Psychology in school, but right now that can wait, I feel that I have more to offer outside the classroom first. The practical experiences that Sharelle has undertaken as part of the Sport and Outdoor Recreation degree have been enriching and challenging, This years recent five week block of teaching rounds was absolutely AMAZING. I was fortunate enough to do it at Boging Outdoor Education Centre situated near Falls Creek. I had the best time teaching students up in the alpine environment where my passion for the outdoors developed when we first visited the Bogong area on our first year hike. Planning and teaching full week programs was really exciting and I learnt a lot as an outdoor educator/teacher. It reminded me of why I wanted to work with people in the outdoors as I really saw how the students experiences such as climbing the tallest mountain in Victoria (MT. Bogong) empowered and enriched their lives, (and mine). Through meeting other students on her course and hearing about one student s journey across the Simpson Desert, Sharelle was motivated to hike the Australian Alpine Walking Track (680km), helping to raise over $25,000 for Diabetes Australia-Victoria. After graduation Sharelle is excited by the prospect of travelling in Australia or overseas for employment. 7
