TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS FOR ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL In this catalog are some of our most popular Seminars. If you can t find the ideal seminar, we can customize one for you. Seminars can last between one hour and one day and are presented, during and after school, in the evenings or on week-ends. We also provide Seminars for local Bay area Parent Teacher Associations, in libraries, churches, synagogues and businesses. Communication and Problem Solving Limit Setting/Aggressive Behavior Control 3. Managing Aggressive Behavior Learn how to prevent, manage, and respond to aggressive behaviors in the classroom. Helping students develop appropriate ways to express emotions and moderate impulsive reactions establishes a better learning environment. 1. Comprehension and Attitude Towards Requests This seminar provides specific tools to improve a student s ability to listen, understand and respond to requests. Strategies will be provided to deal with students who can t follow directions or understand limits. 2. Making Homework Manageable You will learn methods to better parent-student communication and help students understand the value and effectiveness of homework. 4. Setting Limits Teaching students inner control by establishing age appropriate limits is an ongoing challenge for parents and teachers. In this seminar we will also explore children s anger and coping strategies, and how you can strengthen your students emotional regulation and anger management skills.

. Friendships/Peers 5. Helping Students with Friendship and Social Hardship Every child has a profound need for close connection, which begins in early attachment to parents and continues in a desire for connection with peers. In this seminar we will discuss childhood relationships, and learn ways to guide and support children in developing positive social relationships. Bullying Prevention, Cyber Safety and Digital Media Bullying Prevention and Cyber Safety The seminar draws upon the latest research on bullying prevention and the development of social and emotional skills in children. You will learn the Steps to Respect and Second Step methodologies (evidence-based bullying prevention programs for educators and teachers developed by the nationally acclaimed Committee for Children). Parents Place also works in collaboration with Common Sense Media to develop digital citizenship and cyber safety to keep the youth safe, smart and responsible when using digital technology and social media. 6. Bullying Prevention: Preschool and Kindergarten Preschool and kindergarten are foundational years for children s social and emotional development, a time when children learn how to manage and express their emotions, empathize with others, form friendships and communicate with peers. It also may be a time when bullying behaviors first begin to surface, requiring early intervention. In this seminar, teachers will gain skills to help young children the specific social, emotional and communication skills to prevent their involvement with bullying.

7. Breaking the Cycle of Bullying: Elementary and Middle School Thirty-five percent of children are directly involved in bullying incidents. The children who are bystanders, by omission and commission, often make the bullying worse. All children are affected by bullying, whether one-on-one or in their school or play environment. This two-hour seminar describes bullying, how to recognize it and how you can empower your students to break the cycle of bullying. 8. Relational Aggression: Elementary, Middle and High School Girls frequently bully within a network of friends unlike boys, who tend to bully acquaintances or strangers. This dynamic makes it more difficult to identify bullying among girls and intensifies the harm to the target. This two-hour seminar addresses the culture of relational aggression among girls, girls roles and relationships within peer groups, relational aggression in cyber-space and how to prevent and intervene in girls bullying and how to empower girls so they will not participate in bullying. 9. Cyber-Bullying: Helping Schools, Teachers, and Students Stop Online Social Cruelty It s no longer only in the school room or schoolyard, playground or street. Bullying is occurring 24/7, most often over children s computer and mobile phone screens and under the radar of their teachers. This two-hour seminar addresses the many forms of cyber-bullying (including social networking sites, websites, texting, blogging and gaming); what you can do to recognize, prevent, or intervene in cyberbullying; the impact of electronic bullying on the target, the user, and the bystander; and, new legislation to protect those who have been bullied online or through their mobile phone. 10. A 24/7 Digital Media World Our youth represents technically adept consumers and creators of media. The high tech world is their major means of communication and entertainment. In this seminar, you will learn about this digital landscape including how youth are using social networking, blogs, chat rooms, instant messaging, texting, sexting, and gaming. We will explore the potential issues and problems our youth confront with digital technology such as cyber bullying, child obesity, predators, cheating, and addictive behaviors. Teachers will walk away with practical solutions and strategies for wise media management and teaching their students safe, healthy and responsible use of digital technology.

11. Digital Elementary School Kids: Safe, Smart and Responsible Children are using digital technology and accessing the internet at younger and younger ages. This training will give teachers an understanding of the developmental needs of elementary school children as they relate to safe and healthy media use. You will learn how children are using digital technology, the opportunities and challenges of this technology, and its impact on children s development. Tools for teaching students to become safe, smart and responsible media users and creators will be provided. 12. Digital Middle School Kids This seminar focuses on the developmental needs of youth as they relate to safe and healthy use of digital technology. You will learn about internet safety for pre-teens and early adolescents, social networking, online worlds and games, ways to prevent internet addiction, digital reputation and virtual identities. 13. Teens Staying Connected: Middle and High School This seminar explores issues that teachers face in a 24/7 digital media world. Teachers will learn about the benefits and risks of digital technology and cyberspace, and most importantly, what they can do to stay connected and involved in this rapidly expanding cultural landscape. 14. Cyberspace Training for Teachers and Teens Teachers and their students (ages 11 and up), can explore the world of digital media together: texting, Twitter, on-line games, Facebook, and other social networks. This seminar offers an opportunity for teachers to discuss with their class the advantages and dangers of the internet and other media. PRE-TEEN ADOLESCENCE 15. Empowering Girls to Look Confidently at Themselves (5 th - 8 th grades) Whether approaching puberty or already adolescents, young girls look at themselves in their changing world. This interactive seminar teaches new tools and skills to effectively deal with the changes, and help your female students thrive through adolescence.

16. Positive Communications in the Classroom In this seminar, we will discuss adolescent development and the unique challenges of communicating with teens and pre-teens. Teachers will learn tools to prevent conversation roadblocks such as anger, reactivity, emotional shut down and power struggles. SPECIAL NEEDS NOTE: In addition to the seminar listed below, we are continuously updating our Special Needs Seminar which we do for both teachers and parents. Contact Mimi Ezray, LCSW, MPH ( or to discuss your specific areas of interest related to special needs. 17. Adolescent Mental Health and Well-Being Adolescence is a time of physical and emotional change that is often accompanied by moodiness and erratic behavior. But how do teachers know if student s behavior is normal or if he/she harbors a problem that requires intervention? This seminar will help teachers recognize whether a student needs additional support. 18. School Success with ADHD This seminar will focus on how to help your student with the challenges of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Participants will discuss accommodations and strategies that can be used to support the learning, social, and behavioral difficulties faced. Teachers will also learn how to build an effective student-teacher-parent conversation and advocate for their student in order to provide continuous support at home and school. PARENT-TEACHER-ADMINISTRATOR 19. It Takes a Village This workshop will focus on developing and strengthening relationships between teens and parents, other teachers, support staff or administrators. Teachers will learn strategies to communicate skillfully and in ways that build bridges and promote the successful and healthy development and learning environment for each student. 20. Successful Parent-Teacher Conversations Participants will learn how to prepare for a parent-teacher conference when concerns arise and how to conduct the conference using active listening and other supportive strategies. We will explore ways to work with parents in a disagreement, to make referrals, and the possible next steps to take. Participants will be invited to share actual

case examples, without breaching confidentiality, and practice strategies. ` 21. Working with Parents of Children with Special Needs As a teacher, you are the first person to recognize a student with special needs. You will learn how to communicate and collaborate with parents to ensure the child s needs are understood and addressed. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to collaborate with parents of special needs children, make referrals to outside resources and work with a treatment team. 22. Balancing Work and Family This interactive seminar is a discussion of the recurring challenges that teachers face when they work while raising children. We will also provide strategies to find a balance between work and family.
