This information is for those students who have attended a home school for all or part of their high school career. What is Home School? Learning at home does not necessarily equate to being home schooled. Because of the tremendous growth of online and virtual education, a student may be able to learn at home through an online school with the online teachers, which would not be considered parent-directed home school. For NCAA purposes, ask yourself these questions, which may help you determine whether your schooling would be considered home school or through nontraditional means. The NCAA definition for nontraditional courses includes courses taken online with online teachers, assessments and grading. 1. Who created or developed the curriculum for the courses? a. If an outside school or program has created the curriculum, that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the home school parent or tutor has created the curriculum, that suggests home schooling. 2. Who provides the instruction in the courses? a. If the instruction is provided by an outside teacher, such as a teacher through the online school, that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the instruction is provided by a parent or tutor in the home, that suggests home schooling. 3. Who has designed or created the assignments and assessments? a. If the assignments and assessments are created by the outside school or program, that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the assignments and assessments are created by the parent or tutor, that suggests 4. Who evaluates or grades the assignments and assessments? a. If the assignments and assessments are graded by the outside school or program (either computer graded or graded by the online teacher), that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the assignments and assessments are graded by the parent or tutor, that suggests 5. Who determines what score or grade is achieved in the course(s)? a. If the outside school or program determines the grade the student has earned, that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the parent or tutor decides what grade the student has earned, that suggests
Page No Who is responsible for producing a student transcript or grade report? a. If the transcript or grade report is produced by the outside school or program, that suggests a nontraditional course. b. If the transcript or grade report is produced by the parent or tutor, or home school umbrella program, that suggests Nontraditional Course Evaluation If the answers to the questions above have suggested that the courses were taken through nontraditional means (such as an online or virtual school), your courses through that school would be evaluated under the NCAA nontraditional course legislation. To determine if the courses taken through that program may be used by the NCAA Eligibility Center, you will need to look that school up in the NCAA database. Here is what to do: 1. Go to the NCAA Eligibility Center website at 2. Click on Enter Here for NCAA College-Bound Student-Athletes. 3. Click on Resources. 4. Click on U.S. Students. 5. Click on List of NCAA Courses. It is at this link that you can look up the school to determine if the school's courses meet NCAA legislation. Simply type in the name of the school and the city and/or state. The screen shot below shows you the information that is displayed. In this case, the Additional Information field indicates that XYZ Virtual School has been reviewed and its nontraditional courses have been determined to meet NCAA legislation. The NCAA Eligibility Center will use the transcript from XYZ and compare the courses on the transcript to the courses on the List of NCAA Courses for XYZ. If the courses from a school do NOT meet NCAA legislation, it will be indicated in this Additional Information field. If the field is blank, the NCAA Eligibility Center has not yet reviewed the school.
Page No. 3 Home School Course Evaluation The only courses that would need to be evaluated as home schooling are those in which the parent or tutor is the one who: 1. Plans and delivers actual instructional activities (lectures, discussions, tutorials, feedback, assistance, etc.); 2. Determines the student s comprehension of the material by grading and evaluating student performance and achievement on assignments and assessments and providing appropriate re-teaching (if necessary) and feedback; 3. Determines the overall grade the student achieved in the course; and 4. Either places the grade on a transcript/grade report or reports the grade to a transcription agency or entity. What are the Next Steps? In order to evaluate your home school certification status for purposes of NCAA initial eligibility, please submit the following information to the NCAA Eligibility Center: 1. Create an account and register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at Registration includes completing the amateurism questionnaire and paying the registration fee. 2. Fee payment of $70 for U.S., U.S. Territories and Canadian students (U.S. Territories include American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands); and $120 for all other international students. You are eligible for a waiver of the registration fee only if you have already received a waiver of the SAT or ACT fee. (This is not the same as a U.S. state voucher.) You would need to send a copy of the letter from SAT or ACT granting you the fee waiver. 3. Submit standardized test score(s) (ACT and/or SAT). Scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency. When registering for the ACT or SAT, use code "9999" to select the NCAA Eligibility Center as a score recipient. Note that test scores received on a transcript cannot be used by the NCAA Eligibility Center. A Student Score Report or scores taken directly from a Student Score Report cannot be accepted by the NCAA Eligibility Center for initial-eligibility purposes. 4. For any courses taken through home school, submit a home school transcript that includes: a. Course titles; b. Course grades; c. Units of credit for courses;
Page No. 4 d. Grading scale (if numeric grading is used, alpha/letter equivalent grades are needed); e. Signature of the home school administrator (the parent or other person who organized, taught and evaluated the home school coursework). Without this signature, the transcript will be declared unofficial; f. Ninth grade start date (month/day/year); and g. Graduation date (month/day/year). 5. Transcript from any other high school, college and/or nontraditional program attended. Remember that transcripts from other schools must be mailed directly from the issuing institution. 6. Evidence that home schooling was conducted in accordance with state laws (a written statement from the home school administrator verifying compliance with state home school legislation). Please attach any supporting documentation. 7. A statement of who taught and evaluated coursework, awarded grades and issued credit. 8. Submit the Core-Course Worksheet for the core courses used throughout home schooling for English, math, science, social studies, foreign languages, comparative religion and philosophy courses. No Core-Course Worksheet is required for community college courses. However, the community college must send an official copy of the transcript directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center. See the Core-Course Worksheet Instructions for help. 9. Proof of high school graduation, including specific graduation date (month/day/year of graduation). Examples of proof of graduation include a graduation date on a high school transcript, standard diploma or GED (need a copy of exam results and certificate). There are some examples available for reference, including a Home School Checklist, Transcript Example, and Core-Course Worksheet. These references can be found by going to clicking the link for "College-Bound Student-Athletes" to enter, navigating to the "Resources" tab and then clicking "Home School Students." This will help provide guidance on what the NCAA Eligibility Center needs regarding home school information. The NCAA Eligibility Center will evaluate home school coursework only after all required documents have been received. After the information listed above is received, the NCAA Eligibility Center may need to request additional information or clarification before completing an academic certification.
Page No. 5 HOME SCHOOL EVALUATION ADDRESS: NCAA Eligibility Center (ATTN: Home School Evaluation) 1802 Alonzo Watford Sr. Drive Indianapolis, Indiana Phone: 877/ or 317/ Our customer service staff will be happy to assist you with your questions. If you were home schooled in New York, please note that the NCAA Eligibility Center cannot accept "proof of graduation" from a diploma issued by a home school in New York, because the state of New York does not recognize diplomas that are issued by a home school. If a student is home schooled in New York and does not graduate from a high school, that student would have to provide a GED certificate in order to meet the NCAA's graduation requirement.
