2 COURSE SYLLABUS EDUC 210 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FUNDAMENTALS COURSE DESCRIPTION Designed to introduce a candidate to the field of early childhood education; an overview of child development and learning, family relationships, assessment of young children, developmentally effective approaches to early childhood education, and how to use content knowledge to build a meaningful curriculum. RATIONALE It is essential for early childhood programs to hire teachers who are specially prepared to work with young children. This course focuses on meeting the specific needs of young children in the early childhood setting. Our professional responsibility and spiritual mandate is to minister to the needs of young children at their developmental level. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven (Luke 18:16). I. Identify current trends and issues related to diverse families and communities and their impact on the field of Early Childhood Education. H. Describe the characteristics of quality programs of education for young children. I. Observe and evaluate early childhood programs. J. Discuss and analyze current issues in the field of early childhood education. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (6) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to post a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 2 paragraphs and at least 2 words. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 classmates threads. Each reply must be 1 paragraph and at least 100 words. D. Field Experience Project 1. Field Experience Plan: The candidate will identify the setting and method for fulfilling a minimum of 2 field observations in an early childhood setting with a Field Experience Plan. 2. Field Observation Reports (2): After completing the required field observations, the candidate will prepare a 1 2-page report analyzing his/her experience at each site. 3. Every candidate is responsible for completing the Background Check and Fingerprinting (Package 1) through the American DataBank (LibertyEdBackground). The candidate must begin this process immediately. Questions regarding the background check may be sent to Therefore, the candidate must take the following action: submit his/her background check information (Package 1) at LibertyEdBackground. The candidate is responsible for any fees incurred. Though no additional fee applies, the VA Child Abuse Registry must be submitted in order for the candidate s Criminal Background Check to be complete. This applies to all candidates in the SOE, regardless of residence. E. Early Childhood Project Page 2 of 4

4 The Early Childhood Project must include practical classroom applications that could be used in the early childhood setting.the project will be a slide PowerPoint presentation along with a 1-page introduction, a cover page, and a reference page. The candidate will indicate the intended audience/use for the project, explain how the project aligns with NAEYC Standards, and explain which standard(s) he/she is targeting. NAEYC Standards must be clearly stated and referenced. The candidate must include 2 scholarly sources, in addition to the text, for a total of 3 scholarly sources. A reference list in current APA format must be provided for all sources used to create the project. The introduction (a 3-page Microsoft Word document) and the PowerPoint will be submitted through LiveText. F. Quizzes (7) The candidate will take 7 open-book/open-note quizzes throughout the course. Each quiz contains 10 multiple-choice questions. The questions will be based on the Morrison text. Each quiz has a 1-hour time limit. G. Final Exam The candidate will complete a Final Exam that consists of multiple-choice questions covering all chapters assigned in the Morrison text. The exam has a time limit of 2 hours. The exam is open-book/open-notes and must be completed the first time it is launched. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. Points B. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
