The objective of the proposed research is to advance theories of infant language acquisition by assessing infants ability to (1) track statistical regularities when real speech is presented in background noise, (2) encode words extracted from natural language into long-term memory, and (3) represent newly segmented words with the appropriate level and type of detail to facilitate subsequent language learning. The goal of this research project is to assess how distributional properties of self-produced syllables affect perceptual preferences for syllables in normal hearing and hearing impaired infants.
