K.I. SAMEN news INTRODUCTION Grashoek, January 2013 Hello to all our SAMEN friends! It s already January 2013, time to look back to the year 2012! For K.I. SAMEN it was a year with several developments. In line with the growth of our company we hired new employees in our home market and also abroad. Due to this we were able to further improve the efficiency within our organization. Besides these company changes our export activities made a step forward as well with a few new and interesting markets. A different but memorable moment for K.I. SAMEN was te launch of our Dutch book: op de bres voor de boer!. During a well visited ceremony (in March) the book - describing the history of the Dutch genetic cattle improvement and specific the role of K.I. SAMEN - was presented. Worthwhile to mention were the experiences on the several exhibitions last year. Next to the contact moments with our esteemed customers, the presentation of the progeny groups brought us overwhelming reactions. The NRM (All Holland Dairy show held once every two years), with groups from SUNFLOWER PS rc and NORWIN rc and exhibitions in Hardenberg and Gorinchem with groups from SANTANA and BURNSTYN were a great success! Of course K.I. SAMEN is known for presenting quality groups at shows and exhibitions. In 2012 they were, despite the small selection space, magnificent! In 2013 our motivated team will continue to spread our K.I. SAMEN philosophy into the world: Practical proven breeding - looking at cows and not at paper! In this International Newsletter, edition Winter 2013, the latest proof news, a background of eye-catching bulls SUNFLOWER PS rc and NORWIN rc together with feet & leg specialist DALI and milk and conformation polled Pp bull TIMELESS and three new future bulls, will be highlighted. We hope you will enjoy all the information presented in this International Newsletter and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us! We wish you a healthy and profitable 2013! With personal regards, Jos Hooijer Manager Sales & Marketing

PROOF NEWS: K.I. SAMEN More producing daughters in practice for reliable test news Most of the time we start with the highest new-coming bull or the bull who showed the highest improvement. Not this time! This proof we would like to discuss a bull who only gets better the more daughters become part of his proof: WEGGELHORSTER SANTANA! SANTANA is the perfect match with all Addison and O-Man type of cows. He breeds very balanced cattle with a fine bone-structure. Due to his outcross pedigree, we expect SANTANA to be one of the highly demanded bulls for the coming years. With sire Zidane and dam sire Gentry SANTANA doesn t have the perfect genomics blood for high genomic figures but... we all know what really counts! Easy calvings, positive protein, very good udders and feet & legs and good management traits.watch and see, but don t wait to make use of this proven genetics! SUNFLOWER PS rc improved significantly on fat- and protein% with a slight decrease of his kgs. On top of that a major improvement of his total conformation, especially due to his udder score. The decrease of his milk production quantity is in line with our expectation. The heifers start slow but show a huge progression during their lactations. At the moment many heifers start producing, which results in lower kgs of milk in his index. We expect that his breeding value for production will climb again. The best conformation bull for an affordable price is SHERIFF. Together with Goldwyn and Danillo SHERIFF belongs to the top 3 conformation bulls of the first 80 bulls from the national bull charts. The lack of genomics blood is also seen at our other outcross bull NORWIN rc. Despite his very good and powerful build daughters (best progeny group at the All Holland Dairy show 2012), their striking easy locomotion (with a slightly shorter pass than average) and impressive total impression we cannot understand and explain the below average score for feet & legs. Farmers who have producing daughters, visitors of the All Holland Dairy show, our colleagues... All of them draw the same conclusion: it s better to watch for yourself, instead of relying blindly on theoretical figures. Especially when the lack of genomics blood throws their describing breeding values backward! Weggelhorster Regate 1 (s. SANTANA) Own.: Mts. Haijtink-Wichers, Lochem (NL) Peeldijker BURNSTYN is the new red & white Holstein bull at our bull chart. With his pedigree - Mr. Burns x Rubens x Ronald x Tops x Alpenrex x Triple Threat - BURNSTYN has a beautiful line up with proven bulls. BURNSTYN daughters can be described as productive heifers with frames with a lot of length, width and good rumps. Their udders are well attached with a lot of width in the rear udders. Their strongest point however are the feet & legs, without any exception a good locomotion. BURNSTYN s daughters are (potential) show winners! RED MYSTERY is a bull who also improves every proof again. Together with MALANDO they keep their high solids as their main selling points. On the conformation segment K.I. SAMEN bulls RED TUMULT and RED IMPULSE keep their high scores at the high level we are used from them Peeldijker Burnstyn K.I. SAMEN b.v. - practical proven breeding - now, in the past and in the future! Most important however: all figures are based on daughter performances, official productions and NO genomic impact!
SUNFLOWER PS rc Just the way you like them! SUNFLOWER PS rc SUNFLOWER PS rc: Grashoek Beaver 3 (VG 87) Just rarely K.I. SAMEN owns a bull with such a tremendous and complete package like Sunflower PS rc (O-Man x Lightning rc x Emerton). Sky high protein, red carrier, maternal line with 9 generations (!) VG or EX cows and a pedigree filled with top (proven) sire of sires (like O-Man and Lightning rc) of the world. This all can be found back in Sunflower PS rc pedigree. Sunflower PS s sire, O-Man, is a bull that broke through with his figures at the right moment. O-Man meets all requirements a from the current modern dairy farmer. The dairy cow of the future must be easy to manage, supplied with solid conformation and must be able to realize a good productions with good protein. O-Man accomplices this and, besides this, has also good scores for SCS, fertility and longevity. Superb production traits Positive fat and protein Calving ease bull Red Carrier Via dam Savannah (VG 86) Sunflower PS rc has another very successful bull in his pedigree: Lightning rc. Lightning rc has proven himself plenty, both in the male as in the female line. Rarely a sire of sire realized such a high succeeding percentage with his sons. His contribution to the Red & White population had been tremendous! The red carrier from Lightning has been passed on through dam Savannah to Sunflower PS rc. This makes him interesting for the red & white and black & white Holstein population. Together with his dam line (the Suzan line) with 9! generations VG or EX cows and proven K.I. SAMEN bull Superman PS (Lightning rc x Emerson) Sunflower PS rc entered the spotlights with high expectations. Sunflower PS rc fulfilled these expectations trouble free. Youthful heifers Good use of feet & legs Super secondary traits From the same family as Shogun Sunflower PS rc breeds exceptional high protein contents. His udder traits show shallow attached udders and strongly attached fore udders, low SCS and very healthy udders. His daughters are taller than average, are strongly build with appealing body widths. They maintain their condition with ease during their lactation and together with their good temperament, late maturity and persistency the Sunflower PS rc daughters are the dairy cows just the way you and we like to have them!
NORWIN rc All-round POWER CHAMPIONS! NORWIN rc aaa NORWIN rc: Harley Holsteins Petula 4 Richters NORWIN is a typical K.I SAMEN bull! Due to low expected breeding values other companies didn t show a lot of interest in him. Just by looking at this Stormin Norman son convinced us quickly. His impressive appearance together with his strength, balance and outcross pedigree brought NORWIN to the Netherlands. Dam of calving ease bull NORWIN is the famous Meggilee, registered EX 91 points total score. This Comestar Lee daughter is also known as dam of the successful red & white Talent daughter Maxima (EX94). With 157 daughters in his breeding value NORWIN belongs to one of the bulls with a limited selection possibility. Remarkable however is the uniformity shown by these NORWIN daughters. The NORWIN daughters can be described best as heifers with youth, power and drive to realize high milk productions. Based on the pedigree you would not expect high milk figures but NORWIN s daughters show just the opposite. Their frames show a lot of width and strength. Besides very good somatic cell scores NORWIN will breed daughters with a good daughter fertility. The combination from mentioned characteristics - strength, width and power - will heavily contribute to that number. In other words, NORWIN is a bull who will show progress on paper, as well for production, health traits and conformation. Proof of this you can see with your own eyes at our website: Several moving images of NORWIN and his daughters can be found there. Need more POWER? Use NORWIN! Outcross for red AND black Youthful heifers with a lot of width in their frames Strongly attached udders Low cell counts Excellent dam --> excellent bull --> excellent daughters In short, red carrier bull NORWIN distinguishes from others simply because he adds those qualities that others lack - strength, balance and an outcross pedigree. Successful because it matches is the image NORWIN rc will claim!
DALI Mr. Impressive for all cows! DALI aaa DALI: Reintje 8 In the international pedigree of DALI (Duplex x Tugolo x Novalis) we only find the best cow families of the world. Via his maternal line, Dali descends from the protein rich Dea line (the Jardin family). Besides this, Dali has via Novalis (from the well-known Lou Etta line) and Tugolo two longevity specialists (and both have very good scores for fertility and SCS) in his pedigree. Finally Dali has via his paternal line the popular Hillary family in his pedigree. Dali s sire Duplex (s. Durham) descends from the Hillary s (EX 91 x EX 94 x EX 94) and owns therefore a very conformation rich pedigree. It is no surprise that Duplex, besides good production traits, possesses a sky high conformation index. Duplex has no weak traits in his conformation index and is at the Spanish Total Index top for several years now (production, conformation and secondary traits). Dali s maternal line is, as described earlier, family from German top bull Jardin. Dea (EX 91 Tonic x VG 86 Aerostar), Jardin s dam, is GGD of Dali. Dea already showed her capabilities. She produced more than 80,000 kg of milk (just as het dam Delfi) with a 305 day average of more than 3.70% protein. Besides this, she is dam of several bull dams among which are the full sisters of proven bull Jardin: Delfine (VG 87) and Debby (VG 89), Lee daughter Deli (VG 86), Ford daughter Dega (VG 86) and last but not least EX James daughter Dema. All these daughters produced milk with appealing fat-protein ratios and very high protein contents (average more than 3.60% protein). From all these daughters James daughter Dema is the odd one. Not only an extreme fat-protein ratio (same average of 3.79% for fat and protein), Dema also thrilled many visitors of the 2006 European Dairy Show in Oldenburg with her excellent conformation and her appearance. Outcross and all-round Superb feet & legs Very good locomotion Wide and correctly placed rumps Impressive appearance (EX 91) with EX 93 Frame It is therefore no surprise that, by looking at his family from both dam and sire, Dali himself is a very impressive appearance and that his daughters are expected to do the same. Dali s breeding values doesn t show any disadvantages and can easily be used in every herd.
TIMELESS Pp Polled and worldwide! TIMELESS Pp aaa TIMELESS Pp: Grashoek Ruth 138 Pp (VG 87) J&G Timeless Pp (Canvas x Domino x Cliffhanger) is a well developed dairy typed bull with a wide selection of positive characteristics. He combines a lot of milk with excellent conformation and outcross bloodlines in his pedigree. Canvas, sire of Timeless, is a bull of contrasts. He breeds a massive amount of milk (in combination with negative solid percentages) and good conformation with a good condition score and good feet and legs. Traits in which the maternal line of Timeless shines out are, among others, the secondary traits. And don t under-estimate the contribution of grandsire Domino and great-grandsire Cliffhanger. Both bulls score good longevity and fertility figures and a good figure for somatic cell count. The maternal line, originating from the USA, has developed positively over the last years due to the input of sires from Canada and the US. This T-family is seen as the best cow family of the US with the hornless gene. These T-line cows also produce a lot of milk and show very good conformation. In the maternal line of Timeless we see herdbook registered cows with one by one VG or EX scores of 85, 88, 90, 88 and 86 points total score. Polled Calving ease bull High production Strong rear udders Outcross Timeless is also heterozygote polled, which means that 50% of his offspring will be hornless. His daughters are easy calving and show a lot of longevity and persistent lactations. Together with their high productions Timeless Pp daughters will bring money into the pockets of each farmer.
FUTURE BULLS VERTONGHEN rc (Lucrative rc x Paramount x Olympic) Interesting for Holstein and Red & White Red Carrier with high longevity Dam line with high lifetime productions SAMEN bull Denver rc is from the same line aaa: ARKANSAS (Arnold x Redgold x Manfred) Different and uncommon pedigree Reliability and solid performances Very high protein Longevity aaa: MICK (Woodstock x Win 395 x Jorryn) Well developed strong bull International pedigree High lifetime productions in dam line Backed with 6 generations VG cows aaa: 423
