The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, founded in 1959, is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses deaths, injuries, and property damage from crashes on the nation s roads. The Highway Loss Data Institute, founded in 1972, shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model. Both organizations are wholly supported by auto insurers.

Where are we? Location of IIHS/HLDI and Vehicle Research Center North America Washington, D.C. South America Arlington Charlottesville Virginia

Institute activities Priority 1 objective research Priority 2 effective communications News releases (TV, print, Internet) Films Testimony at state and federal legislative and regulatory hearings Briefings of other stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers IIHS and HLDI rely on aggressive research and communications We do not lobby, legislate, or litigate We empower people and policymakers with objective information

IIHS research is broad-based to achieve its mission of reducing harm from automobile crashes Haddon matrix of possible motor vehicle crash interventions crash phase changes in before during after graduated licensing belt use alcohol people impaired driving laws licensing laws helmets lane departure warning airbags OnStar vehicles daytime running lights vehicle structure fuel system integrity electronic stability control bumpers environment roundabouts red light cameras speed cameras roundabouts breakaway poles speed cameras emergency medical sservices trouble spot treatment

IIHS and HLDI research has led the way in many areas of highway safety

People drive more safely because of IIHS research Click It or Ticket campaigns, pioneered by IIHS, increase safety belt use Studies of graduated licensing have greatly improved teen licensing laws and continue to drive further improvement Research showing that automated enforcement reduces speeding and red light running has led more communities to adopt speed cameras and red light cameras Research on alcohol-impaired driving has been instrumental in maintaining the alcohol purchase age of 21 and in supporting recent initiatives for alcohol interlocks for all drivers convicted of a DUI or DWI offense

People drive more safely because of IIHS research Click It Or Ticket campaign, North Carolina Graduated Driver Licensing Automated enforcement Alcohol-impaired driving

Roads are safer because of IIHS research Research led to lengthening recommended yellow light timing at signalized intersections Communities increasingly are installing roundabouts instead of signal or sign controlled intersections because of research showing benefits for both safety and mobility (traffic flow) Research has helped promote installation of rumble strips to warn drivers when their vehicles stray from lanes Research has helped identify low cost countermeasures for mitigating many urban crashes

Roads are safer because of IIHS research Yellow-light timing Roundabouts Rumble strips Low-cost countermeasures

Vehicles are safer because of IIHS research In the 1970s, IIHS research and testing on crash fires led directly to federal regulations for fuel tank integrity in crashes In the 1980s, IIHS research kept airbags alive and a lawsuit by US insurers led to federal requirement for automatic restraints to protect occupants in crashes now universal frontal airbags Most recently, IIHS and HLDI research added momentum to the automaker-led installation of electronic stability control
