1 Access the SQLsafe Release Ntes SQLsafe is a pwerful backup and recvery slutin that greatly reduces backup and recvery time, minimizes strage requirements, and prvides enterprise management capabilities t cnduct backups acrss a large numbers f servers simultaneusly. 2 Get Started Use the fllwing checklist t get started using SQLsafe. Fllw these steps... Register the SQL Server instances yu want t backup and restre. Deply Backup Agents t yur registered instances. If yu want t receive alert ntificatins thrugh , cnfigure yur settings. If yu want the ptin t use the InstantRestre feature t restre a database enable the InstantRestre service. Determine what yur backup and recvery strategy will be. Determine whether yu will perfrm manual backups r create plicies t autmate yur backups. Determine which types f cmpressin and encryptin are best fr yur envirnment. Determine whether yu will use lg shipping plicies as part f yur recvery strategy. Ensure that yu are able t restre the database. Yu can perfrm a full backup, r yu can test yur cnfiguratin by running a verify-nly backup. T perfrm a verify-nly backup, run the Restre Wizard and select the Verify nly ptin n the Recvery tab.

3 Upgrade t this release Upgrading SQLsafe allws yu t take advantage f the new features available in versin 7.0. TIP The backup file names using the %timestamp% macr may change and cause issues with yur backup files. This issue nly affects sme users. Fr mre infrmatin, see the Knwn Issues sectin f the Release Ntes. TIP SQLsafe 7.0 includes a file system filter driver t supprt the InstantRestre feature. The driver, named SQLsafe- FilterDriver, allws SQL Server t access database data while SQLsafe is executing InstantRestre. The driver is nly used during this actin and is n lnger in use nce the database is cmpletely hydrated. Upgrade checklist T successfully upgrade yur Micrsft SQL Server envirnment t this build, cmplete the prcedures utlined in the fllwing table. These prcedures supprt upgrades frm SQLsafe versins 5.0 r later. Fllw this step... Ensure the cmputers n which yu want t upgrade SQLsafe meet r exceed the prduct requirements fr SQLsafe versin 7.0. Fr example, ensure.net Framewrk 2.0 SP1 r later is running n the target cmputer. Ensure yur Windws lgn accunt has lcal administratr permissins n the cmputers yu intend t upgrade. Review the prduct architecture. Review the supprted installatin scenaris and identify the apprpriate upgrade path fr yur envirnment. Clse all pen applicatins n the cmputers yu intend t upgrade. Upgrade yur SQLsafe installatin. Available upgrade paths Because each cmpnent can be installed separately n different cmputers, the type f upgrade yu will need t perfrm will depend n yur envirnment. The fllwing table describes the cnditins under which yu wuld fllw a typical r staged upgrade path. Envirnment Descriptin Simple envirnment, where the Management Cnsle, the Repsitry, and the Management Service all reside n the same cmputer Distributed envirnment, where each SQLsafe cmpnent resides n a different cmputer. Recmmended Path Typical Staged Why A simple envirnment can be upgraded thrugh the setup prgram. A distributed envirnment requires a staged upgrade t maintain backup cntinuity while each cmpnent is upgraded.

4 Envirnment Descriptin Multiple Management Cnsles deplyed t different cmputers. Backup Agents frm different SQLsafe versins. Change cntrl plicies that require multiphased upgrades. Recmmended Path Staged Staged Staged Why A SQLsafe installatin with multiple Management Cnsles requires a staged upgrade in rder t maintain cnnectin with all Backup Agents while each cmpnent is upgraded. An envirnment that manages Backup Agents frm different SQLsafe versins requires a staged upgrade in rder t maintain cnnectin with all Backup Agents while each cmpnent is upgraded. An envirnment with stringent change cntrl plicies requires a multi-phased upgrade in rder t test each updated cmpnent thrughly befre mving n t the next step. New encryptin ptins in 6.0 and later SQLsafe 6.0 and later prvides new, mre secure encryptin algrithms. T use these new algrithms, upgrade yur Backup Agents t the latest versin. Previus Encryptin Optins SQLsafe 6.x Encryptin Optins AES DES Triple-DES RC2 AES-128 AES-256 These new encryptin ptins replace the ptins previusly available in SQLsafe 5.0 r earlier. Yu can select the new encryptin ptins when yu manually perfrm a backup, r create and edit existing Backup Plicies. If yu had set encryptin ptins when creating yur Backup Plicies, the encryptin methd specified in the crrespnding SQL Server jb will be autmatically updated t AES-128 when yu upgrade the assciated Backup Agent. Yu can later change this setting by editing the plicy. SQLsafe 6.0 and later des supprt previusly encrypted archives; yu can cntinue t restre any encrypted backup file created with a previus versin f SQLsafe.

5 Perfrm a staged upgrade Use a staged prcess t upgrade yur SQLsafe installatin if yu have a distributed envirnment, have deplyed multiple Backup Agents that cannt be upgraded during the same time perid, r yu need t adhere t change cntrl plicies. What is a distributed envirnment? A distributed envirnment cnsists f the SQLsafe management cmpnents running n different physical cmputers. The management cmpnents are: Repsitry database Management Service Management Cnsle The time scale ver which yu chse t perfrm a staged upgrade will depend n the size f yur SQL Server envirnment and yur crprate change cntrl plicies. Fr example, yu may chse t perfrm ne f the fllwing steps per day r per week; hwever, the rder in which yu perfrm them shuld remain the same. Hw t perfrm a staged upgrade Use this prcess if yur envirnment meets the fllwing cnditins: The SQLsafe cmpnents are installed n different cmputers All Backup Agents are versin 5.0 r earlier T perfrm a staged upgrade: 1. Upgrade the Management Service and Repsitry database t versin 7.0 by using the setup prgram t perfrm a Custm install. 2. Upgrade yur Management Cnsle installatins t versin 7.0. Althugh yu can upgrade the Management Cnsle installatins ver time, keep in mind that 5.0 and earlier Management Cnsles shuld nt be used with 7.x Backup Agents. 3. If yu use plicies t autmate yur backup and restre peratins, start the SQLsafe Management Cnsle t synchrnize the jbs assciated with each plicy. This synchrnizatin shuld happen autmatically. 4. Upgrade yur previusly deplyed Backup Agents accrding t yur change cntrl plicies. As yu upgrade yur Backup Agents, ensure yu use a 7.x Management Cnsle t manage the crrespnding instances and Backup Plicies.

6 Perfrm a typical upgrade Use the Typical install t upgrade yur SQLsafe installatin if yu have centralized SQLsafe deplyment r are upgrading frm a trial installatin. This prcess assumes yu can upgrade all deplyed Backup Agents during the same time perid. What is a typical envirnment? In a typical envirnment, the SQLsafe management cmpnents will be installed n the same physical cmputer. These cmpnents include: Repsitry database Management Service Management Cnsle Existing backups executed thrugh maintenance plans, SQL Server jbs, r the CLI will cntinue t run successfully using lder Backup Agents. Once yu have cmpleted the installatin f the management cmpnents, yu can upgrade yur Backup Agents. Hw t perfrm a typical upgrade A typical upgrade can be easily cmpleted during ff-hurs. T perfrm a typical upgrade: 1. Perfrm a Typical install t upgrade the management cmpnents t versin 7.0. When prmpted, verify the name f SQLsafe Repsitry database. 2. If yu use plicies t autmate yur backup and restre peratins, start the SQLsafe Management Cnsle t synchrnize the jbs assciated with each plicy. This synchrnizatin shuld happen autmatically. 3. Upgrade all previusly deplyed Backup Agents.

7 Upgrade deplyed Backup Agents Upgrading yur Backup Agents allws yu t take advantage f the new features in this release. Cnsider upgrading previusly deplyed Backup Agents ff-hurs during a single time perid r in stages accrding t yur crprate change plicies. Yu can remtely upgrade previusly deplyed agents thrugh the SQLsafe Agents view in the Management Cnsle. TIP The Backup Agent is autmatically installed n the lcal cmputer when yu install r upgrade any f the ther SQLsafe cmpnents. Backup Agent cmpatibility with Tivli Strage Manager (TSM) SQLsafe 6.4 and later includes extensive enhancements t hw SQLsafe handles backing up t and restring frm TSM Server. If yu stre backup files n a TSM Client nde, ensure yu upgrade the Backup Agents that perfrm backups and restres using thse files. Backup Agent cmpatibility with Backup Plicies SQLsafe 7.x requires versin 7.x Backup Agents t successfully run new Backup Plicies and edit existing Backup Plicies (created with SQLsafe 5.0 r earlier). If yu want t cntinue using 5.0 r earlier Backup Agents fr existing Backup Plicies, install SQLsafe 7.x alng side yur current SQLsafe deplyment. Use SQLsafe 7.x t create and manage new Backup Plicies, and use SQLsafe 5.0 t maintain existing plicies. Backup Agent cmpatibility with Lg Shipping Plicies Because SQLsafe 5.0 Backup Agents cannt restre backups written by 7.x Backup Agents, envirnments that include Lg Shipping plicies require a specific upgrade path. First upgrade the Backup Agents running n the SQL Server cmputers hsting the secndary databases, and then upgrade the Backup Agents running n the SQL Server cmputers hsting the primary databases. Otherwise, when SQLsafe attempts t ship a new transactin lg backup, the restre peratin will fail and the Lg Shipping plicy status will shw that the assciated jbs are ut f date until all the Backup Agents have been upgraded. Hw t upgrade a Backup Agent using the Management Cnsle This prcedure guides yu thrugh the prcess f upgrading previusly deplyed Backup Agents using the Management Cnsle. Yu can als manually upgrade a Backup Agent using the setup prgram. T upgrade deplyed Backup Agents: 1. Verify that yur envirnment includes a versin 7.0 SQLsafe Management Cnsle. 2. Start the new SQLsafe Management Cnsle, and navigate t the SQLsafe Agents view. T access the SQLsafe Agents view, click the SQLsafe Agents tab at the bttm f the Servers tree. 3. Fr each Backup Agent yu want t upgrade, select the SQL Server cmputer that is hsting the agent, and then click Upgrade SQLsafe Backup Agent n the right-click cntext menu. Upgrading the Backup Agent autmatically upgrades the SQLsafe XSP deplyed t each registered SQL Server instance running n the selected cmputer.

8 Upgrade the Lite r Freeware Agent The Management Cnsle detects when a registered SQL Server instance is running SQLsafe Lite r SQLsafe Freeware Editin. Yu can upgrade the Backup Agent t the current versin f SQLsafe enterprise editin using ne f the fllwing methds: Deply the current versin f the agent. Fr mre infrmatin, see Install SQLsafe Backup Agent. Select the instance in the Servers tree, and then click Enable trial license n the Instance View. This upgrades the license t an enterprise editin trial license. Click Upgrade n the SQLsafe Agent Prperties windw. Fr mre infrmatin, see Mdify Backup Agent prperties. When yu upgrade the Backup Agent, SQLsafe deplys the current versin f the Backup Agent with a trial license enabled. The trial license allws yu full access t the SQLsafe enterprise features fr all SQL Server instances hsted n that cmputer. The trial license is a limited-time, limited-instance license that yu will need t upgrade with a prductin license key.

9 Upgrade the SQLsafe Freeware Editin SQLsafe Freeware Editin is n lnger available. Hwever, yu can easily upgrade yur SQLsafe Freeware Editin deplyment t either SQLsafe r SQLsafe Lite. Upgrade SQLsafe Freeware Editin t SQLsafe Lite Yu can upgrade SQLsafe Freeware Editin t SQLsafe Lite 6.x by running the SQLsafe setup prgram n the target SQL Server cmputer and selecting Agent Only Install. The first time yu perfrm a backup using SQLsafe Lite, the tl will generate a trial license. T install and activate yur prductin license, click Idera > SQLsafe Lite > Activate License n the Start menu. Upgrade SQLsafe Freeware Editin t SQLsafe T upgrade frm SQLsafe Freeware Editin t SQLsafe 6.x, first perfrm a full installatin f SQLsafe, and then upgrade each deplyed Backup Agent thrugh the Management Cnsle. If yu install SQLsafe n the same cmputer as yur existing SQLsafe Freeware Editin, the crrespnding Backup Agent will be autmatically upgraded as part f this installatin. After installatin, apply yur new SQLsafe 6.x prductin license by clicking Manage License n the Tls menu in the Management Cnsle.

10 Deply the SQLsafe XSP There are tw ways t deply the SQLsafe XSP: remtely thrugh the Management Cnsle r lcally thrugh the cmmand-line interface (CLI). If yu are upgrading a Backup Agent, yu will be prmpted t perfrm an upgrade f the XSP fr all instances n the target SQL Server. If yu d nt want t deply the XSP t all instances n a given SQL Server, yu can deply the XSP t a single instance thrugh the Management Cnsle r the CLI. XSP deplyment thrugh the Management Cnsle Yu can upgrade the XSP when yu deply r upgrade the Backup Agent frm the Management Cnsle. At that time, yu will be prmpted fr permissin t install r perfrm an upgrade f the XSP fr all instances n the target SQL Server. T install r upgrade the XSP, click Yes, and cmplete the authenticatin infrmatin as necessary. This actin will install the new XSP n all instances n the SQL Server. Yu can als deply the XSP t a single instance. T deply the SQLsafe XSP t a single instance: 1. In the Servers tree, select the instance t which yu want t deply the XSP. 2. On the right-click cntext menu, click Install SQLsafe Extended Stred Prcedures. 3. Click OK. XSP deplyment using the SQLsafe CLI If yu did nt install the XSP during the Backup Agent upgrade, r yu want t deply the XSP t select instances n a given SQL Server, yu can install the XSP manually. T deply the SQLsafe XSP with the standalne installer: 1. Lg n with an administratr accunt t the SQL Server cmputer n which yu want t install the SQLsafe XSP. Ensure yur lgn accunt als belngs t the System Administratrs rle n each SQL Server instance. 2. Ensure yu have the mst current versin f SQLsafe. 3. Open the Cmmand Prmpt, and navigate t the directry where the SQLsafe CLI is installed. By default, the CLI is installed in C:\Prgram Files\Idera\SQLsafe. 4. Type SQLsafeCmd InstallXsp InstanceName MyInstance Server MyServerCmputer, specifying the name f the instance and the SQL Server cmputer. Fr mre infrmatin abut available InstallXSP ptins, such as specifying authenticatin credentials, see the CLI Help. T view the CLI Help, type SQLsafeCmd Help InstallXSP.

11 Upgrade SQLsafe in a clustered envirnment Yu can upgrade any existing Backup Agents and SQLsafe installatins that were previusly deplyed t a Windws cluster. Hw t upgrade the Backup Agent 1. On each cluster nde (cmputer), deply the new Backup Agent. a. Lg nt the nde using an administratr accunt. b. Run the SQLsafe setup prgram. 2. Change the Backup Agent service prperties t require a manual start. a. Start the Windws Services tl. b. Stp the SQLsafe Backup Service. c. On the General tab f the Service Prperties windw, set the Startup type t Manual. 3. Start the Micrsft Cluster Administratr tl, and navigate t the cluster where yu have upgraded the Backup Agent. 4. Identify which cluster resurce grup cntains the Backup Agent, and verify that the grup prperties are set t the fllwing values. T learn hw t set these prperties, see Deply Backup Agent t a virtual SQL Server. Ensure a Netwrk Name resurce maps t the crrect TCP/IP address, and bth have been cnfigured as dependencies. Ensure a generic resurce was created fr the Backup Service (SQLsafeBackupService.exe). Ensue the Backup Service generic resurce is set t replicate the fllwing rt registry key: SOFT- WARE\Idera\SQLsafe. 5. Assign a shared path t the drive being used by the target instance n this nde. The target instance is the SQL Server instance that hsts databases yu want t back up and restre. On a Windws 2003 cluster: a. In the left navigatin pane, expand the Grups nde. b. Select the cluster resurce grup t which the target instance belngs. c. Use Windws Explrer t create a flder n the physical disk yu identified fr this resurce grup. d. Start the Registry Editr and navigate t the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Idera\SQLsafekey. Fr this key, add a String Value named Shared Pathand set it t directry path fr the new flder. On a Windws 2008 cluster: a. In the left navigatin pane, expand the apprpriate dmain nde, and then expand Services and Applicatins. b. Select the cluster resurce grup t which the target instance belngs, expand Disk Drives in the right pane. c. Use Windws Explrer t create a flder n the physical disk yu identified fr this resurce grup. d. Start the Registry Editr and navigate t the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Idera\SQLsafekey. Fr this key, add a String Value named Shared Pathand set it t directry path fr the new flder. 6. In Windws Services, bring the SQLsafe Backup Service resurce nline. 7. 13 Upgrade SQLsafe in nn-trusted dmains SQLsafe 6.4 and later supprts seamless integratin and cmmunicatins between trusted and nn-trusted dmains. If yu want t take advantage f this feature, use the fllwing instructins t upgrade yur SQLsafe 6.3 r earlier envirnment. TIP T upgrade SQLsafe 6.4 r later t the current release versin, fllw the standard Typical r Staged upgrade instructins. Hw t upgrade a single Repsitry deplyment This deplyment cnsists f: One SQLsafe Repsitry hsted in the trusted dmain A Management Service in each nn-trusted dmain A single Management Service that manages SQL Server instances in yur trusted dmain Management Cnsles in trusted and nn-trusted dmains Backup Agents in trusted and nn-trusted dmains T upgrade this deplyment: 1. Uninstall the Management Service frm each nn-trusted dmain. 2. Ensure yur Backup Service and Management Service accunts have the apprpriate permissins. 3. Ensure the required prts are pen in all trusted and nn-trusted dmains. 4. Decide hw many SQLsafe Management Cnsles yu need t keep in each dmain, and uninstall thse cnsles yu n lnger need. Maintaining a Management Cnsle in a nn-trusted dmain is n lnger required. 5. Run the setup prgram t upgrade: The SQLsafe Repsitry and Management Service in the trusted dmain The Management Cnsles in the trusted dmain The Management Cnsles in the nn-trusted dmains. Nte that this step is ptinal, depending n whether yu decided t maintain these cnsles. 6. If yu use plicies t autmate yur backup and restre peratins, start the SQLsafe Management Cnsle t synchrnize the jbs assciated with each plicy. This synchrnizatin shuld happen autmatically. 7. Upgrade all deplyed Backup Agents in yur trusted and nn-trusted dmains. Hw t upgrade an island deplyment This deplyment cnsists f: A cmplete SQLsafe installatin in each nn-trusted dmain A single centralized installatin that manages SQL Server instances in yur trusted dmain T upgrade this deplyment: 1. Decide hw many SQLsafe Management Cnsles yu need t keep in each dmain. Maintaining a Management Cnsle in a nn-trusted dmain is n lnger required. 2. Identify which dmain yu want t hst yur new centralized SQLsafe deplyment. 3. Ensure yur Backup Service and Management Service accunts have the apprpriate permissins. 4. Ensure the required prts are pen in all trusted and nn-trusted dmains.

14 5. Uninstall the SQLsafe management cmpnents frm the dmains yu d nt intend t use t hst SQLsafe. Remember t preserve the Management Cnsles yu identified in Step Upgrade the SQLsafe management cmpnents that were previusly deplyed t the selected dmain. 7. Run the setup prgram t upgrade all remaining Management Cnsles. 8. If yu use plicies t autmate yur backup and restre peratins, start the SQLsafe Management Cnsle t synchrnize the jbs assciated with each plicy. This synchrnizatin shuld happen autmatically. 9. In each Management Cnsle, verify that: It can cnnect t the upgraded SQLsafe Repsitry It is using the crrect Management Service 10. Upgrade all deplyed Backup Agents in yur trusted and nn-trusted dmains.

25 Prduct cmpnents and architecture SQLsafe prvides a rbust, easy-t-use SQL Server database backup and restre slutin. Behind a simple user interface, SQLsafe ffers an architecture that is bth flexible and extremely pwerful. SQLsafe fits yur envirnment, n matter hw simple r cmplex. The SQLsafe architecture easily runs in yur SQL Server envirnment with minimal cnfiguratin. All SQLsafe cmpnents run utside and separate frm SQL Server prcesses. SQLsafe des nt add t r mdify any f yur native SQL Server files r services. After yu install these cmpnents, yu can implement features such as Reprts. TIP Yu must use the same Windws accunt fr the Backup Agent and InstantRestre Service. Start the setup prgram Yu can install SQLsafe n any cmputer that meets r exceeds the prduct requirements. T start installing SQLsafe: 1. Lg n with an administratr accunt t the cmputer n which yu want t install SQLsafe. 2. Clse all pen applicatins. 3. Run Setup.exe in the rt f the installatin kit. 4. Click INSTALL n the Welcme windw. 5. Click INSTALL SQLsafe n the Install windw. 6. On the Welcme windw f the setup prgram, click Next. 7. Review and accept the license agreement by clicking I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next. Fr yur first install, we recmmend using the default lcatin. T chse a different lcatin: Click Change t navigate t the lcatin yu want t use, and then click Next. This type ensures yu install and cnfigure all required SQLsafe cmpnents, s yu can immediately begin using SQLsafe in yur envirnment. Click Typical, and then click Next. Chse which SQL Server instance yu want t hst the Repsitry database Yu can use a SQL Server instance installed lcally n this cmputer r n anther cmputer. Fr yur first install, we recmmend using a lcal instance.

36 SQLsafe can cnnect t the selected SQL Server instance using the credentials f yur current Windws lgn accunt r a SQL Server lgin. Fr yur first install, we recmmend using yur current lgn accunt credentials. T chse a different instance: 1. Click Brwse t select the SQL Server instance yu want t use. The Select SQL Server windw lists all available instances in yur current dmain and ther trusted dmains. 2. Click OK. 3. Click Next. T specify a SQL Server lgin: 1. Click Use Micrsft SQL Server authenticatin, and then click Change. 2. Specify the credentials f a lgin with sysadmin privileges n that instance, and then click OK. 3. Click Next. Chse which Windws user accunt yu want the Management Service t use Fr yur first install, we recmmend using lcal system accunt fr the Management Service accunt. SQLsafe uses this service accunt t cmmunicate between the Backup Agent, the Management Cnsle, and the SQLsafe Repsitry. T chse a different accunt: 1. Determine whether yur envirnment uses Windws r SQL authenticatin, and then pick a secure accunt that has the apprpriate permissins. 2. If yu use Windws authenticatin, click User Accunt, and then prvide the apprpriate credentials. 3. If yu use SQL authenticatin, click Use Micrsft SQL Server authenticatin, prvide the apprpriate credentials, and then click OK. 4. Click Next. Chse whether yu want t install the SQLsafe XSP Yu can install the SQLsafe extended stred prcedures (SQLsafe XSP) t all lcal instances when yu install SQLsafe. T skip this install: Click N, and then click Next. T restrict access: 1. Click Yes. 2. If yu use SQL authenticatin, click Use Micrsft SQL Server authenticatin, prvide the credentials f a lgin with sysadmin privileges n that instance, and then click OK. 3. Click Next. Chse where yu want SQLsafe t stre backup files Yu can use the default backup lcatin r specify a different lcatin. Fr yur first install, we recmmend using the default lcatin (C:\Backup). If yu want t save backup files t a different lcal flder, type the directry path in the Lcal Path field, and then click Next. If yu want t save backup files t a netwrk share, type a valid path (\\server\share) in the UNC Path field, and then click Next.

37 Cmplete the install Indicate that yu are ready t cmplete yur install and apply the cnfiguratins yu specified. After install is cmplete, yu can start the Management Cnsle t immediately begin experiencing the benefits SQLsafe prvides. T cmplete yur install: 1. Click Install. 2. Click Finish.

38 Install SQLsafe Backup Agent Yu can remtely deply the SQLsafe Backup Agent frm the Management Cnsle t SQL Server instances acrss yur enterprise. T install a SQLsafe Backup Agent: 1. In the navigatin pane, click SQLsafe Agents. 2. Right-click n the cmputer in questin in the tree pane. 3. Click n Install SQLsafe Backup Agent frm the cntext menu. 4. Chse whether yu want t install the SQLsafe XSP. 5. Click OK.

39 Deply the Backup Agent Use the fllwing instructins t deply the SQLsafe Backup Agent t yur virtual SQL Server instances. When deplyment is cmplete, yu can back up and recver databases hsted n yur virtual instances. Yu d nt need t install any ther SQLsafe cmpnents n yur clustered servers t implement a disaster recvery strategy fr thse virtual instances. If yu have a clustered envirnment hsting multiple instances, yu must manually deply the SQLsafe Backup Agent n each nde. Fr mre infrmatin n implementatin, see Idera Slutin 1394 "Hw t install the SQLsafe Backup Agent n a clustered SQL Server" in the knwledge base at ur Custmer Service Prtal ( Hw t deply the Backup Agent n a Windws 2003 cluster 1. On each nde (cmputer) in the target cluster, verify that a resurce grup exists fr yur target SQL Server cluster. If the target cluster des nt have a SQL Server resurce grup, create ne. 2. On each nde, run the SQLsafe setup prgram t install the Backup Agent. When prmpted t enter service accunt credentials, specify a Windws accunt that meets the permissins requirements. 3. Change the Backup Agent service prperties t require a manual start. a. Start the Windws Services tl. b. Stp the SQLsafe Backup Service. c. On the General tab f the Service Prperties windw, set the Startup type t Manual. 4. Lg nt the currently active cluster nde (primary nde) using an administratr accunt, and then start the Micrsft Cluster Administratr tl. 5. Assign a shared path t the drive being used by the target instance n this nde. The target instance is the SQL Server instance that hsts databases yu want t back up and restre. a. In the left navigatin pane, expand the Grups nde. b. Select the cluster resurce grup t which the target instance belngs. c. Use Windws Explrer t create a flder n the physical disk yu identified fr this resurce grup. d. Start the Registry Editr and navigate t the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Idera\SQLsafekey. Fr this key, add a String Value named Shared Pathand set it t directry path fr the new flder. 6. Create an IP Address resurce fr the SQLsafe Backup Agent service. If a Netwrk Name resurce already exists, skip this step. a. Select the cluster resurce grup fr the SQL Server instance yu want t back up and restre. b. Create a Netwrk Name resurce that will map t the TCP/IP address. c. Add the TCP/IP address as a dependency. 7. Create the Generic Service resurce fr the SQLsafe Backup Agent service (SQLsafeBackupService.exe). a. Select the cluster resurce grup fr the SQL Server instance yu want t back up and restre. b. Add a Generic Service resurce named SQLsafe Backup Service and specify the fllwing dependencies: The name f the disk used by the SQL Server resurce cluster grup. If yu enable alert ntificatins, yu can cnfigure hw the will appear in yur Inbx. Sender Name Enter the name that will appear as the sender f the . Reply-t Address Enter the address that will appear as the sender, and where replies t the message will be sent. Pririty Select lw, nrmal, r high pririty fr the alerts. What mail server infrmatin is required? Yu must specify the mail server infrmatin s that SQLsafe can send ntificatins. Server Address Enter the address f yur mail server. 48 Manage licenses The License Key Manager prvides an intuitive, simple-t-use interface fr SQLsafe license key management. Yu can: View the license key assciated with each SQL Server instance Add r remve license keys Backup Agents and their assciated SQL Server instances are the nly licensed cmpnents in the SQLsafe architecture.yu can als view the current license fr a Backup Agent in the Infrmatin pane f the Instance View. Hw d I manage my licenses? Yu may need t add a license if yu exhaust yur trial license, r if yu need t install mre SQL Server instances. T upgrade a trial license t a permanent license: 1. On the Tls menu, click License Key Manager. 2. On the License Key Manager windw, click Add 3. On the Add License Key windw, enter the instance name and the license key, separated by a cmma. 4. Specify a license key fr each instance by pressing ENTER after each entry. 5. Click OK. The license keys will display in the License Key Manager windw. 6. If yu want t save the list t a file, click Save t a File and save the file t yur desired lcatin. What are the terms f the trial license? By default, SQLsafe installs with a limited time, unlimited instance trial license key. After yu install the SQLsafe cmpnents using the Typical r Custm setups, the Management Cnsle lists yur trial license under Result in the Details pane. Yu cannt manage the default trial license. This license key is stred in the SQLsafe Repsitry. What are the terms f the prductin license? SQLsafe licenses are issued per SQL Server instance and fr a specific time perid. Yu can manage these licenses with the License Key Manager. The SQLsafe enterprise editin license gives yu full access t the Backup Agent thrugh the Management Cnsle, including peratin status infrmatin. What is the SQLsafe Lite license? When yu have different versins f SQLsafe deplyed in yur envirnment, ne r mre registered SQL Server instances may be running SQLsafe Lite. SQLsafe Lite des nt supprt backup and restre peratins thrugh the Management Cnsle. Fr example, yu cannt create a backup plicy fr a SQL Server instance running SQLsafe Lite. If yu want t manage all registered SQL Server instances thrugh the Management Cnsle, yu can upgrade the SQLsafe Lite Backup Agents t the enterprise versin f SQLsafe. Hw d I upgrade my SQLsafe Lite license? Yu can temprarily upgrade a SQLsafe Lite license t an enterprise editin license by installing a SQLsafe trial license. Nte that, when the trial perid has expired, yur license will revert back t SQLsafe Lite.

49 Yu can then permanently upgrade a SQLsafe Lite license t an enterprise editin by purchasing a prductin license key and entering it in the License Key Manager. T upgrade a SQLsafe Lite license: 1. 51 Mdify Backup Agent prperties Yu can mdify many f the SQLsafe Backup Agent prperties frm the Management Cnsle and adjust perfrmance parameters t suit yur system needs. If the SQL Server instance is running SQLsafe Lite, the Send Status every x secnds ptin is ignred. SQLsafe displays peratin status infrmatin nly fr Backup Agents running with an enterprise editin license. If the SQL Server instance is running SQLsafe Freeware Editin, all settings are unavailable. Yu must upgrade the Backup Agent t either SQLsafe Lite r the enterprise editin t make changes t the Backup Agent prperties. Fr mre infrmatin, see Manage licenses. T change the agent prperties: 1. In the navigatin pane, click SQLsafe Agents. 2. Right-click the apprpriate SQL Server instance. 3. Click Prperties frm the cntext menu. 4. T manage yur SQLsafe Backup Agents, click SQLsafe Agents in the navigatin pane. T view infrmatin abut a specific agent, right-click the crrespnding SQL Server cmputer listed in the tree pane, and then select Prperties. Why wuld I enable trubleshting? Occasinally when yu cntact Idera supprt fr assistance, a representative will ask yu t enable lgging t get a better idea f what the issue is in yur envirnment. SQLsafe allws yu t custmize yur debug settings when trubleshting an issue with yur Backup Agent. Is there a disadvantage if I leave debug mde enabled fr a lng perid f time? There is n disadvantage t leaving SQLsafe in debug mde fr an extended perid f time. If yu experience an issue that ccasinally and unexpectedly ccurs, r yu want t capture data ver a lng perid f time, leave debug mde enabled. This settings gives yu the advantage f already lgging the data when the issue ccurs.

52 Hw the IR Service wrks The InstantRestre Service manages the fllwing prperties, which are stred in the registry: Max number f cncurrent hydratins Number f driver threads Large raw buffer IO size Hydratin chunk sizes Decmpressed blck cache size Driver active IO list size TIP Yu must use the same Windws accunt fr the Backup Agent and InstantRestre Service. During installatin, yu are asked t enter credentials fr nly ne accunt and the ther is created with the same infrmatin. If yu manually change yur accunt infrmatin, make sure yu change it in the ther service as well t avid any issues. Hw d I enable r disable the InstantRestre Service? SQLsafe includes the InstantRestre (IR) Service during an installatin r upgrade. Users can enable r disable the IR cmpnents using an Agent. If an InstantRestre peratin is in prgress when a user attempts t disable IR cmpnents, SQLsafe returns an errr.

53 Mdify yur SQL Server list SQLsafe prvides the ability t add, remve, and grup SQL Server instances frm within the tree pane. T add a SQL Server instance, click Register SQL Server in the SQLsafe Tday view. T grup r remve SQL Server instances, right-click the server instance r grup in the Server pane. Organizing yur SQL Server instances int related grups can help yu verify the backup status f specify types f SQL Server instances. Fr example, yu can categrize servers based n lcatin, purpse, imprtance, platfrm, r any ther lgical categry. In the Servers tree, the SQL Server Instances nde lists all the SQL Server instances yu have registered with SQLsafe. Hwever, this list may nt reflect all registered SQL Server instances acrss yur envirnment. Fr example, when yur backup r lg shipping plicy cntains instances registered by ther database administratrs, SQLsafe lists these instances in the Discvered Instances nde. Althugh yu can delete this nde, SQLsafe recreate the nde after a plicy status refreshed.

54 Register an instance After creating a server grup, yu can add SQL Server instances t the grup. Adding a SQL Server instance t SQLsafe des nt affect the registered grups r SQL Server instances in SQL Server Enterprise Manager r SQL Server Management Studi. TIP Yu can als register an instance "n the fly" when yu back up the hsted databases thrugh the Management Cnsle. T register a SQL Server instance with SQLsafe: 1. In the navigatin pane, click Servers. 2. Right-click n the Server Grup t which yu want t add the SQL Server instance. 3. Select Register SQL Server frm the cntext menu. 4. In the Available Servers list in the Register SQL Servers dialg, select the instance yu want t add t the Server Grup. 5. Click Add >. SQLsafe mves the selected server t the Added Servers list. 6. Select the required authenticatin methd used t lg in t the SQL Server instance, and then click OK.

55 Understand Ttal Cst f Operatin (TCO) SQLsafe prvides a built-in calculatr t help yu calculate yur mnetary return n yur SQLsafe investment. Yu can view this calculatr in the Disk Space Savings pane n the SQLsafe Tday view. The calculatr attempts t measure the time and mnetary savings yu gain thrugh using the SQLsafe cmpressin scheme. The Return On Investment (ROI) calculatr bases yur ROI n the ttal cst f wnership f yur strage devices multiplied by the amunt f disk space savings yu realize using SQLsafe. SQLsafe defaults t the cmmnly used estimate f $200 per GB f strage. Yu can change this estimate t reflect yur particular hardware cnfiguratin.

56 Manage debug settings The Advanced Debug Settings display additinal debug selectins fr trubleshting the Backup Agent running n the selected SQL Server cmputer. Yu can als set the lg file characteristics and maximum size depending n what issue yu want t trublesht. It is recmmended that yu change these settings based n guidance frm Idera supprt. A rlling lg allws yu t create a lg files that "rll" when they reach the maximum file size r the service is restarted, meaning that when the max size/restart ccurs, it deletes the ldest infrmatin and lgs the newest. This feature helps yu avid a large, cumbersme lg file. T change the debug settings: 1. In the navigatin pane, click SQLsafe Agents. 2. Right-click the apprpriate SQL Server instance. 3. Click Prperties frm the cntext menu. 4. Click the Advanced buttn. 5. Make the necessary changes, and then click OK. Hw d I access debug settings? T manage yur debug settings, click SQLsafe Agents in the navigatin pane. Right-click the name f the SQL Server instance fr which yu want t manage debug settings, and then select Prperties. Click the Advanced buttn. Once yu make the apprpriate changes, click OK n the Advanced Debug Settings. Make sure t select Enable Debug Mde n the SQLsafe Agent Prperties, and then click OK r debugging is nt enabled. What lg file settings can I change? If yu enable debug mde, SQLsafe creates a lg file based n the settings in the Rll Lg fields. Yu can chse ne f the fllwing ptins fr the lg file: N Maintains the debug lg as a single file that is unlimited in size. This ptin allws SQLsafe t capture diagnstic infrmatin ver an extended perid f time. Yur lg file may becme very large and shuld be mnitred t avid any issues with file size. TIP D nt enable N unless abslutely necessary. Use N nly when the prblem being diagnsed ccurs very infrequently and is nt nticed in a timely manner. In almst all cases, increasing the size r number f files is sufficient fr trubleshting an issue and an unlimited file size is unnecessary. Yes and keep n file(s) Maintains the debug lg as a series f files that are limited in size and quantity. This ptin allws SQLsafe t capture diagnstic infrmatin ver a limited perid f time, depending n the size and quantity f files kept. When a lg file reaches the size limit r the service is restarted, SQLsafe renames the file and starts a new lg file. The lder the lg file, the higher the digit that exists at the end f the file name. Fr example, file x.lg.3 is mre recent than x.lg.4. When the lg file rlls ver and reaches the maximum quantity, SQLsafe deletes the ldest file and the next ldest file takes its place. Because the amunt f space used by the lgs is limited, this setting des nt require yu t mnitr the lg files. TIP A Yes ptin is the recmmended setting. Be aware that the amunt f histry retained is limited, and it may be pssible fr a prblem being diagnsed t be missed. T successfully back up data n a SQL Server instance, SQLsafe requires that yu deply a Backup Agent t the target instance. Yu can remtely deply a Backup Agent thrugh the Backup Wizard by registering the target instance. Hw d I mirrr my backups? Click Enable Mirrring, and then specify where yu want the mirrr cpies t be stred. Fr each mirrr, SQLsafe creates a cpy f the backup archive set Yu can specify up t 2 mirrrs fr each backup peratin. Keep in mind that creating mirrrs can impact the perfrmance f yur backup peratin. If yu want t stp the backup peratin when the mirrr lcatin is unavailable, select the crrespnding ptin. Hw d I keep my backup running despite netwrk errrs? Select Retry writing backup files after netwrk errrs, and then click Cnfigure t change the default settings. By default, SQLsafe will retry the backup peratin every 10 secnds and then fail after 5 minutes (300 secnds) f cntinuus errrs. Als, ver the curse f the peratin, SQLsafe allws a ttal f 60 minutes in which t retry the backup befre stpping the peratin. This ptin is nt available when backing up t tape using Tivli Strage Manager. What d I specify when backing up t a TSM Server? Specifies a partial backup, which includes the primary filegrup and any read-write secndary filegrups. Readwrite filegrups are nt supprted by SQL virtual database. If this ptin is selected, the Generate metadata ptin will be disabled. Additinally, backups created with the read-write filegrups ptin cannt be used by SQL virtual database t create virtual databases. Why is the Generate Script buttn enabled? 135 Hw InstantRestre wrks SQLsafe InstantRestre is a pwerful new restre technlgy that allws yu t bring a database nline quickly while the restre ccurs in the backgrund. SQLsafe enables SQL Server t immediately begin the transactinal part f a database restre, deferring the data file (MDF) restratin until after the database is nline. SQL Server cntinues t handle all transactin lg (LDF) restratin activity. When the restre prcess is cmplete and the database is nline, SQLsafe takes ver and restres the remaining data t the data files in the backgrund. If SQL Server needs data nt yet restred, SQLsafe delivers the data t SQL Server directly frm the backup. Because SQLsafe never interferes in the SQL Server lg peratins, ACID cmpliance fr yur databases is nt affected. When SQLsafe cmpletes data file restratin, it remves itself frm all I/O activity f the database and leaves behind a database identical t ne restred with a traditinal restre prcess. As a result, SQLsafe is n lnger required t access the database. TIP TIP Yu cannt use the InstantRestre feature n any versin f the Windws 2000 perating system and Micrsft SQL Server 7. SQLsafe 7.0 includes a mini-filter driver t supprt the InstantRestre feature. The driver, named SQLsafeFilterDriver, allws SQL Server t access database data while SQLsafe is perfrming an instant restre. The driver is nly used during an instant restre and is n lnger necessary nce the database is cmpletely restred. Hw t enable InstantRestre Yu first must enable the InstantRestre feature. Because sme users may feel uneasy installing a device driver n their systems, InstantRestre is disabled by default. Yu can enable r disable the InstantRestre feature quickly depending n what task yu are perfrming: If yu are viewing yur SQL Server instances in the Servers tree, right-click the instance yu want t restre, and then select Enable SQLsafe InstantRestre r Disable SQLsafe InstantRestre. If yu are in the SQLsafe Database Restre wizard, cmplete the wizard up t the Restre Type tab. If an InstantRestre peratin is in prgress when a user attempts t disable these cmpnents, SQLsafe displays a warning message. Eligible backups The InstantRestre feature is available fr nly a database backup that is: A SQLsafe backup archive with backup metadata (maps). Because InstantRestre allws SQL Server t immediately access the data in a backup, the prcess needs additinal infrmatin abut the backup which is nt present in a native backup file. Please nte that this infrmatin is als missing in SQLsafe backups that are written directly t Tivli Strage Manager (TSM). A cmplete database restre. InstantRestre can restre a database using any nrmal restre chain starting with a full backup. If such an event ccurs, the database transitins t a read-nly state t prevent the system and users frm writing additinal data t the database. At this pint, yu can restre access t the backup archives and the instant restre can safely resume. Handling errrs during Hydratin If the hydratin prcess is interrupted fr any reasn: The InstantRestre peratin transitins t the Halted state. The Hydrate peratin transitins t the Halted state. SQLsafe displays an errr message stating that hydratin is interrupted. If an errr ccurs during the InstantRestre peratin prir t the beginning f the Hydrate prcess, SQLsafe displays nly the InstantRestre peratin with an errr status, and includes the errr message fr the failure. SQLsafe includes the fllwing failure scenaris that may ccur during an instant restre. Backup file Is crrupt If the backup file is crrupt r there is a read prblem when accessing the netwrk, the SQLsafe Filter Service fails t decmpress during hydratin. If the backup file is crrupt, and yu have anther cpy f the backup file, yu can restart hydratin using the nn-crrupt backup file. If the issue is a read prblem when accessing the netwrk, yu can restart hydratin nce yu address the netwrk issue. Backup file Backup file Is inaccessible due t a netwrk failure Is inaccessible due t a lack f access permissins If the backup file is inaccessible due t a netwrk failure, InstantRestre attempts a retry. If the retry fails, and the maximum retry attempts is reached, the Hydratin peratin status transitins t the Failure state. If yu chse this ptin, yu must als select the specific backup set t restre. T pick specific backup files, click the Backup Files buttn. Hw d I keep my restres running despite netwrk errrs?

142 Select Enable netwrk resiliency, and then click Cnfigure t change the default settings. By default, SQLsafe will retry the restre peratin every 10 secnds and then fail after 5 minutes (300 secnds) f cntinuus errrs.
