2 The Congress Traffic and vehicle safety is still top priority not only in Europe, but also in countries as China or India, where vehicle population is expected to grow fastest. The positive trend in vehicle safety in Europe shows that measures taken in the field of structural safety, restraint systems, vehicle dynamics and driver assistance become effective. For the next decade the EU has set ambitious milestones. It will only be possible to reach the target of halving the number of people killed on EU roads by 2020 with the substantial use of electronically-assisted safety systems and linking information within the vehicle and with the infrastructure. Automotive engineering is currently dominated by the electrification of the powertrain. However, electric vehicles do have to cover the same safety standards e.g. regarding passenger safety as conventionally-powered vehicles. New additional safety aspects of electric vehicles are electric safety and battery safety. Additionally the greatest challenge for electric vehicles is to reduce weight. Therefore lightweight material using and specific vehicle concepts are becoming more and more important. New targets demand new solutions: in passive and active safety, in occupant and partner protection, in structural safety as well as in protection of exterior road users. In order to provide a targetoriented development a realistic testing and a reliable analysis are essential. Therefore 2012 will bring into focus the megatrends in the automobile industry the Vision Zero and the safety of e-mobility.
