There is oe year of prerequisites ad three (3) years of cliical ursig. The time to complete the prerequisites may icrease the time to complete the degree. Its cotet prepares competet professioal practitioers of ursig who will help meet the chagig health care eeds of society. The specific purposes of the program are to: 1) provide a program of study which icludes the developig theory ad practices of ursig leadig to a Bachelor of Sciece degree with a major i Nursig; 2) prepare a geeralist i ursig practice who is able to utilize the ursig process to meet the health care eeds of the commuity; ad 3) provide the studet with a base for graduate study. I the baccalaureate program, studets are provided with a variety of learig experieces both o ad off campus. Examples of cliical facilities used i the Sacrameto ad surroudig areas iclude acute care hospitals, skilled ursig ad exteded care facilities, outpatiet cliics, schools, ad commuity health ad social service agecies. Studets are ecouraged to participate i the Califoria Nursig Studets Associatio (CNSA) as they pursue their academic studies. I their fifth semester of cliical ursig course work, studets are eligible for membership i Zeta Eta, the local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, Iteratioal Hoor Society for Nursig. The Sacrameto State program i professioal ursig is approved by the Califoria State Board of Registered Nursig ad is fully accredited by the Commissio o Collegiate Nursig Educatio. The studet satisfactorily completig the baccalaureate program is awarded a Bachelor of Sciece degree i Nursig ad is eligible to apply for licesure by the Califoria Board of Registered Nursig. Note: Upo completio of the first seve academic semesters of the recommeded course sequece i ursig (after the 5th cliical semester), the studet may apply for the licesig examiatio admiistered by the Califoria Board of Registered Nursig. 2 Udergraduate Program Admissio to the Sacrameto State baccalaureate Nursig program is a two-step process: 1) admissio to the Uiversity ad 2) admissio to the Cliical Nursig program. Prospective first-time freshme, ad trasfer studets who will ot complete certai Cliical Nursig prerequisites by the time they eroll, may apply for Uiversity admissio at ay time up to the regular applicatio deadlie. They will be cosidered as pre-ursig majors util they eter the Cliical Nursig program. Up to 63 geeric studets ad seve 30-uit optio Licesed Vocatioal Nurses are admitted to the cliical portio of the baccalaureate Nursig program each semester. All qualified Registered Nurses are admitted to the RN- BSN tract each semester. A competitive selectio process has bee established sice applicatios exceed program space i the geeric program. Geeric applicats compete with other geeric applicats ad 30-uit optio LVN s compete with other 30-uit optio applicats. Program admittees are selected from amog studets who meet the prerequisite requiremets ad follow the supplemetal applicatio procedures described below. Cotiuig Sacrameto State, trasfer studets ad secod baccalaureate degree applicats are give equal cosideratio i the selectio process. The cliical portio of the ursig program is ope oly to those who ca satisfy the Califoria residece requiremets. Payig residet fees based o a military fee waiver does ot classify oe as a Califoria residet. Cliical Nursig Prerequisites The followig prerequisites are to be met by time of erollmet uless otherwise stated. Completio of a miimum of 30 semester uits. A GPA of 3.0 based o the most recet 30 graded semester uits ad o ay prerequisites take prior to the last 30 graded semester uits. If a applicat has completed less tha 30 uits, but has completed eough prerequisites to apply, all uits completed at the time of applicatio will be used. Up to 50 admissio poits will be assiged based o the applicat s GPA. Completio of the Test of Essetial Academic Skills (TEAS). A miimum score of 75 is required. Up to 50 poits will be assiged based o the applicat s total score from the best testig. The test must be take o later tha February for the followig fall semester or September for the followig sprig semester. The test may be take ay umber of times. The highest score of ay admiistratio will be used. Completio of the specific courses listed uder Pre- Cliical Courses with a miimum grade of C or better i each course. A average GPA of 3.0 is required o the prerequisite courses completed at the time of applicatio. Pre-Cliical courses are acceptable regardless of date completed, but curret kowledge is essetial. NURS 011, NURS 111A, NURS 111B, NURS 144, NURS 150, NURS 155 ad NURS 156 may ot be challeged. If the studet by reaso of special study, experiece or traiig, already possesses the skills, kowledge ad attitudes which are the objectives of the give course, he/she may petitio for credit by examiatio. Graduate Programs The Master of Sciece i Nursig is traditioally desiged to prepare registered urses with baccalaureate degrees for advaced practice roles as family urse practitioers, cliical urse specialists, ad credetialed school urses; i additio the program prepares ursig educators. The curriculum emphasizes the systematic study of professioal ursig practice ad preparatio for a leadership role. The program icludes both classroom ad field experieces i advaced cliical cocepts ad fuctioal role preparatios. The program is desiged for urses curretly employed i hospitals, log-term care facilities, health agecies ad educatioal istitutios who require graduate preparatio to qualify for preset positios or desire advacemet to positios of greater resposibility ad complexity. Schedulig of program offerigs will provide maximum flexibility ad the opportuity for self-directed study. Two programs leadig to the Master of Sciece are offered the traditioal MS buildig upo the RN ad BS i Nursig preparatio, ad a Etry Level Masters (ELM) program for studets who are ot RNs ad have degrees i other fields. I the ELM the first degree i Nursig is at the Master s level. The ELM is discussed after the traditioal MS program. Studets begi the program with 6 uits of the core courses ad proceed ito either additioal core or advaced practice role courses, School Nurse, Nursig Admiistratio, Nurse Practitioer or Cliical Nurse Specialist. Withi the Cliical Nurse Specialist preparatio, studets may focus o adult, family, commuity, metal health, school health or gerotologic advaced ursig practice. Studets desirig the School Nurse Services Credetial must be admitted to the MS program uless already possessig a master s degree. Nietee (19) uits from the MS degree meet the credetial requiremets To meet the requiremets of the Califoria Board of Registered Nursig for titlig as a cliical urse specialist, studets must complete a specified program of advaced practice core classes, as well as 400 practicum hours (see Advaced Cliical Role ad CNS Titlig Requiremets below). Admissio Requiremets To be cosidered for admissio to the Master of Sciece i Nursig, applicats must: have a Bachelor of Sciece degree i ursig from a Natioal League for Nursig (NLN) or Commissio o Collegiate Nursig Educatio (CCNE) accredited istitutio or its equivalet, OR a Baccalaureate degree i a disciplie related to ursig. Studets with a BA or BS degree i o-ursig areas must meet baccalaureate competecies i research, leadership ad maagemet, ad commuity health before progressig i the graduate program.
