6 Definition Cloud Computing Cloud Computing Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. 7 Characteristics of Cloud Computing 1 On-demand Self-Service A consumer can request computing capabilities, such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring human interaction 2 Network Access Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms 3 Resource Pooling 4 The provider s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers Rapid Elasticity Capabilities can be rapidly and elastically provisioned, in some cases automatically, to quickly scale out 5 Measured Service Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported, providing transparency for both the provider and consumer of the utilized service. A Reference Model of Cloud Computing " manages ages the use, performance and delivery e of cloud services, and negotiates relationships between Cloud Providers and Cloud Consumers." Cloud Consumer "A person or organization that maintains a business relationship with, and uses service from, Cloud Providers." 26 Summary & Lessons Learned Cloud Computing primary is an organisational principle of ITservice provisioning, which implies attractive economical characteristics To make the monetary impacts of Cloud Computing transparent, the TCO approach can be applied, e. g. by use of TCO-Tool The TCO approach requires a detailed specification of technical parameters (e. g. required computing power, storage volumes) The TCO approach does not catch the soft benefits of cloud computing (e. g. increased user or customer satisfaction) In order to support long-term decisions, i further financial i parameters have to be considered, e.g. interest rates and taxes In addition, risks of Cloud Computing also have to be considered in depth (e. g. legal aspects) 26
