The next fur semesters will be exciting, intense and challenging as yu learn t care fr individuals thrughut their live, whether ill r healthy. Yu will grw prfessinally and persnally thrugh interactins with faculty, yur fellw students, nursing staff in clinical agencies, and patients. It s exciting t care fr a mther giving birth r an adult leaving the hspital after successful chemtherapy. It s during the difficult times that yu will cme t better understand yur patients and yurself. Fr example, talking with a wife wh has just lst her husband is hard but rewarding. Our graduates have successful careers in multiple specialty areas and perhaps yu will g n t cmplete yur bachelrs, masters r dctral degrees. Yu will be wrking clsely with clinical staff and participating as a member f the healthcare team t prvide patient care. 7 Assciate Degree Nursing Educatin We believe that the TMCC Learning Outcmes with Supprting Definitins serve as the guide fr nursing educatin. Nursing educatin in an institutin f higher learning incrprates knwledge gained frm nursing curses and thse in general educatin, physical, behaviral and scial sciences and cultural diversity. Identificatin f general educatin curses prvides a cmmn fundatin fr all students in the Nursing Prgram. We recgnize that individual educatinal and life experiences als cntribute t each student s nursing educatin prcess. A balance between general educatin and nursing curses with early intrductin f technical skills and persn/student interactin facilitates develpment f nursing knwledge by recgnizing needs f the individual adult learner. Nursing educatin must address use f the nursing prcess acrss the life span at varius pints alng the health-illness cntinuum and in a variety f health care settings. Nursing educatin at the cmmunity cllege must als cnsider the demgraphic and cultural needs f the cmmunity that will serve as the nursing practice envirnment fr the graduate f the Nursing Prgram. Graduates f the prgram are eligible t take the Natinal Cuncil Licensure Examinatin (NCLEX-RN) fr registered nursing. 11 Ntificatin f prgram changes t currently enrlled students All student plicies f the are develped and apprved by the faculty. Apprved plicies are cntained in a Nursing, which is available t all students n the TMCC website. Prir t each Fall Semester, new and returning students will read the Nursing and sign an acknwledgement frm. Input frm students will be cnsidered a part f data gathering regarding plicy changes. New plicies r thse needing revisin will be reviewed and apprved, mdified, r denied during a faculty meeting by a majrity vte f all faculty. Apprval, mdificatin r denial will be by vte f the faculty, with a majrity being required. New and revised plicies will be incrprated int the Nursing prgram website. Changes t the Handbk becme effective at the beginning f the Fall Semester. If a plicy r prcess is implemented prir t the next scheduled handbk revisin, students will be prvided with changes in writing, and sign an acknwledgement f receipt. 13 Sectin II Curriculum The material in this handbk supplements the Truckee Meadws Cmmunity Cllege (TMCC) Catalg and presents mre explicit current requirements and plicies fr the assciate degree ffered by the. Curricular Organizing Structure Curriculum: An rganizing structure fr teaching nursing has been develped by faculty t facilitate learning abut nursing. The rganizing structure prvides a methdlgy fr students and faculty t interpret and rganize knwledge abut clients, nursing, health and the envirnment. The rganizing structure f this Nursing Prgram uses Blm s Taxnmy f Learning, the nursing meta-paradigm (nursing, health, patient and envirnment) and the Nursing Prcess as illustrated in the Organizing Structure chart. Fllwing are cncise descriptins f these cmpnents. Blm s Cgnitive Taxnmy f Learning The nursing curriculum utilizes the six levels f Blm's Taxnmy as a methd f develping the prgram f study t prgress frm simple t cmplex. The first semester f study is directed tward the level f knwledge and cmprehensin, while the furth semester fcuses n analysis, synthesis and evaluatin f the ttal client care and management. Level I. Remember is remembering, recgnizing and recalling imprtant cncepts. It includes factual infrmatin with right and wrng answers. Level II. Understand is the thught prcesses f interpreting, exemplifying, classifying, summarizing, inferring, cmparing, and explaining f interpreting, translating frm ne medium t anther and describing in ne s wn wrds. Eight cre cmpetencies fr graduate f assciate degree Nursing Prgrams are described by the Natinal League fr Nursing (2002). Additinal cncepts have been identified that help explain the cntent required t functin as a registered nurse. These cncepts are defined and are intrduced and then imbedded thrughut the curriculum. The cncepts are used t define nursing and prepare graduates t pass the NCLEX-RN and functin as registered nurses.
