Short Term Training Success Student Success Highlight: Nursing Assistant At the age of 52, Daniel Vaccari made the bold decision to change careers. He turned to St. Johns River State College to prepare for his transition from the construction industry to the health care industry. In addition to mastering the interpersonal and technical skills required in the certified nursing assistant program, he also received personalized instruction on how to compete for a job in today's market. The CBJT workforce specialist covered job search strategies, cover letters and resumes as well as crucial tips to remember when interviewing for a job. In the end, Vaccari's sense of being prepared made the difference, "The CNA program at SJR State helped me become more confident in myself and my abilities," Vaccari said.
Supportive Services Career Preparation Workshop Pathways to Health Careers Transition Planning Group Financial Supportive Services Description A 2-hour workshop designed to introduce participants to job searches, networking, resume and cover letter writing, and interviewing. A 4-hour workshop designed to introduce students entering basic training programs to topics and concepts that would strengthen their success in the training programs and subsequently their jobs. The five-module program covered 1) personality, 2) time management and goal setting, 3) study skills and stress management, 4) communication, and 5) critical thinking and team work. A workshop to help participants 1) identify employment resources offered by the College, WorkSource, and other partner organizations, 2) understand how to engage in effective networking activities, 3) create professional resumes and cover letters, and 4) practice interviewing skills through mock interviews with staff. Additionally, participants received local job opportunities information on the Facebook Program Page. Qualifying participants were eligible to receive participant support stipends for transportation, child care, or emergency assistance. A total of 530 students received financial support services.
Supportive Services
Emergency Support Victoria Health Information Technology At age 52 and living on her own in rural Middleburg, Florida, Victoria was ill-prepared for the news she received in 2011: She was being laid off from the surveying company she d been with for five years. Unemployed and unable to find work without credentials, despite an impressive employment history, Victoria spoke with a caseworker at CareerSource who referred her to the Healthcare Education Alliance. With guidance from HEAL staff and tuition scholarships from CareerSource, Victoria enrolled in the Health Information Technology AS program. Victoria received a transportation stipend to help subsidize the cost travel between her home in Clay County and campus in St. Johns County (a nearly 100 mile round trip). Then, one day in her last semester, Victoria s well pump stopped working. Without a pump, Victoria had no running water in her home. Despite saving for a year to take the certification exams for HIT, Victoria had to use her savings to pay for the repair to the well pump. This would have left her with no funds to pay for her credentialing exam, essential to becoming a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Recognizing her dedication to the program and her academic achievement (3.91 GPA), HEAL awarded Victoria an emergency stipend to pay for the well pump repairs so that she could pay for her credentialing exam. A few months later, Victoria graduated with her A.S. degree in HIT. In January 2013, she passed her RHIT exam and subsequently was hired at the Hospital Corporation of American in Clay County. She now makes $16 per hour - double what she made before being laid off.
Capacity Building-Faculty Distance Learning Initiative (14 Faculty in Nursing and Allied Health) Stipends for Advanced Training 3 Master Degrees 1 Doctorate 4 Ongoing Ingrid Wright Program Director of Radiologic Technology I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity afforded to me by the CBJT grant for the professional development to continue my education, through which I have received reimbursement while completing my Master s degree. Obtaining a Master s degree has allowed me to step up to become the Director of the Radiologic Technology program at SJR State College when the position opened. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), the certification organization for Radiologic Technologists, requires that a Radiologic Technology program director holds a Master s degree as well as being a certified Radiologic Technologist. Only 3% of Radiologic Technologists hold a Master s degree or higher, according to the 2010 Wage and Salary survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (American Society of Radiologic Technologists, 2010). Therefore, not only has the grant helped me to reach my personal goals, but has helped the college to provide this quality program for our area students.
Capacity Building- Simulation Abused wife shoots drunken husband and police arrive. Officers respond and EMT personnel arrive. Equipment To ensure that participants were trained on state-of-the-art equipment, the Healthcare Education Alliance acquired high quality training equipment to support its nursing and allied health programs. Equipment acquired through the grant includes the following: Wife is taken into custody and husband is transported to hospital. Nursing staff take over and begin patient assessment. Respiratory meti-man simulator Mobile x-ray machine Respiratory servo ventilator Respiratory TTL Test lunchs Ambulance BiPap Vision CPR Mannequins EMS Tetherless Patient Simulators Respiratory Care team arrives to assist with pulmonary issues. Rad Techs perform portable x-ray as part of the team. Wife is transported after asthma attack and husband becomes drunkenly defiant. Nursing, Resp Care & Rad Techs intervene. Patient is stabilized and law enforcement officers finish their report.
