Changes to insurance in the IAG & NRMA Superannuation Plan As an accumulation member of the IAG & NRMA Superannuation Plan, you and your family can gain real peace of mind and financial security from knowing you have death and disability insurance cover every minute of every day, no matter where you are and whether you are at work or enjoying a well earned break. Not Peer Reviewed To continually provide you with valuable and competitive benefits, the Plan s Trustee has made some changes to your insurance cover from 1 February 2012, to bring you even better cover. These insurance changes are part of our ongoing commitment to help secure your and your family s financial wellbeing, now and into your retirement. Affected members also receive information about these changes sent to their home address in December Since this cover provides improved features and benefits, there will be an associated increase in insurance premiums. Here we give a summary of the changes to the Plan s insurance cover. Bear in mind that the new insurance arrangements will apply only for an illness or injury that causes you to first stop work on or after 1 February New insurer The Trustee has appointed MLC Limited (ABN ) as insurer for death, total and permanent disability (TPD) and salary continuance insurance. MLC replaces CommInsure for death and TPD insurance. The Plan was previously self-insured for salary continuance insurance. While the new insurance terms and conditions are summarised below, if there is any inconsistency with those of the relevant insurance policies under which this cover is provided to the Trustee, the terms and conditions of the policy will apply. Salary continuance insurance (SCI) cover The following table summarises the changes to SCI under the new arrangements and what they mean for accumulation members. Salary continuance insurance Features Up to 31 January 2012 From 1 February 2012 Monthly benefit on total disability 80% of pre-disability salary 80% of pre-disability salary plus 9% superannuation contribution benefit¹. The superannuation contribution benefit will be credited to your Plan account and will be subject to tax in the Waiting period Benefit payment period Partial disability 12 weeks with the option to apply to the Trustee to reduce the waiting period to 4 weeks (a higher premium applies). The Trustee requires evidence of your good health before agreeing to the reduced waiting period. Up to one year (with an optional second year if approved by the Trustee and the employer) but not beyond age 65. No benefit is payable on partial disability. same way as employer contributions. 12 weeks with the option to apply to the insurer to reduce the waiting period to four weeks (a higher premium applies). The insurer will require evidence of your good health before agreeing to the reduced waiting period. Up to two years, but not beyond age 65. A reduced monthly benefit is payable on partial disability following at least 14 consecutive days of total disability if you are able to return to work on a limited basis at a reduced salary. The benefit is only for the balance (if any) of the benefit payment period.
Rehabilitation expenses If total and permanent disability claim accepted Continuation option No rehabilitation benefit is payable. SCI payments cease No The insurer (at its discretion) may pay for the cost of an approved rehabilitation program up to a maximum of two years monthly benefit. SCI payments continue for up to two years, but not beyond age 65. Within 60 days of ceasing employment (prior to age 60) in some circumstances you can apply for disability income insurance cover through a personal policy with the insurer. 1 Where pre-disability salary is in excess of $404,494, the total disability monthly benefit on pre-disability salary in excess of this amount will be 25% of pre-disability salary plus 9% superannuation contribution benefit, up to a maximum monthly benefit of $50,000. Definition of total disability The following definition of total disability under the policy will apply in place of the definition of total but temporary disablement in the Plan Rules: Total disability or totally disabled means that solely as a result of injury or illness, you are continuously: (i) unable to perform at least one of the important duties of your occupation; and (ii) under the care of and following the regular and continuous advice for treatment from a Doctor in relation to that illness or injury; and (iii) not engaged in any occupation, paid or unpaid. Important duties mean the duties which are essential to producing your salary. Doctor means a registered medical practitioner who is acceptable to the insurer and who is not you, your spouse, family member, business partner or employee. Recurring disability If you return to work after receiving an SCI benefit and become totally disabled or partially disabled again within six months from the same or a related cause, the insurer will treat the new claim as a continuation of the earlier claim. This means that no waiting period will apply for the new claim, but the benefit will only be payable for the remainder, if any, of the benefit payment period. Cost of SCI Since the SCI monthly benefit is being increased to include the 9% superannuation contribution and the maximum benefit payment period will be two years, your SCI premiums will increase. The annual premium rates that apply per $1,000 of cover (based on your age ) from 1 February 2012 are shown in Table 1, which is followed by an example explaining how the premiums are calculated. Premiums will continue to be deducted from your Plan account in the same way.
Table Your premiums will be waived during any period that you are receiving a salary continuance benefit. An example William is 35 with an annual salary of $60,000. If he becomes totally disabled for more than his waiting period, his SCI monthly benefit will be: (80% of $60, % of $60,000) /12 = $4,000 income + $450 super contribution a month. William s insurance premium depends on his chosen waiting period. Under the new arrangements, his premium (based on his age of 36 and assuming a 12 week waiting period) would be: Total monthly benefit x 12 / 1,000 x premium rate ($4,000 + $450) x 12 / 1,000 x 0.61 = $32.57 a year Exclusions SCI benefits are not payable if a claim arises directly or indirectly from: any intentional self-inflicted injury or attempted suicide normal and uncomplicated pregnancy or childbirth war or warlike operations service in the armed forces (not including service in the Australian Defence Force Reserve).
Death and TPD cover In large part, the current terms on which death and TPD cover are provided won t change. However, we have renegotiated the premiums for this cover. For most members this has resulted in a substantial cost saving, but in some cases there will be a small increase in premiums. Death and TPD cover Features Up to 31 January 2012 From 1 February 2012 Standard cover 10% x salary x years and complete No change months to age 65 (two units) Higher cover You can apply to the insurer for No change options additional units of cover where each unit is equal to 5% x salary x years and complete months to age 65. Conditions apply. Transfer cover Not available You may be able to increase your insurance cover in the Plan by applying to the insurer to transfer insurance cover from another super fund or personal policy. Conditions apply. The premium rates for death and TPD cover per $1,000 of cover are shown in Table 2 which is followed by an example explaining how the premiums are calculated. Table n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a 8.04
William is 35 with an annual salary of $60,000. He receives two units of death and TPD cover, giving him: 10% x $60,000 x (65-30 years) = $180,000 The new premium he pays for this cover (based on his age 36 ) is: 0.44 x $180,000/$1,000 = $79.20 a year. William also receives a Funeral Benefit of $10,000. The premium for this cover is: 0.27 x ($10,000 / $1,000) = $2.70 a year. Changing your insurance cover All the changes explained here will happen automatically. You can apply to change your insurance at any time (limits apply and your application is subject to insurer acceptance). It s usually a good idea to review your level of cover once a year, especially if your circumstances have changed, for example, if you have had or adopted a child, been married or divorced or bought a house. To apply to make any change to your cover, complete and return an Adjusting your insurance cover form, available under the Member forms heading in the Documents and Forms section at If you apply for a higher level of cover, you will need to provide the insurer with all the information it needs to assess your application and the insurer may decline your application. Costs in relation to the operation of the Plan s insurance policies The Plan incurs a number of costs in negotiating and maintaining these insured benefits and in managing insurance changes and claims. These costs are recouped (in part) by a loading to the premium charged by the insurer. This loading means that for each $100 of insurance premiums paid by members, $5 is retained by the Trustee to cover the costs of operating the Plan s insurance policies. This loading is included in the premiums shown in tables 1 and 2. Questions? If you need have questions about your insurance cover, you can call the Plan Helpline on (1300 IAG NRM). If you would like to speak to someone about your level of cover, you can also call the Plan Helpline to speak to a financial adviser. This information is general information only and does not take into account your personal financial situation or needs. You should obtain financial advice that is tailored to your personal circumstances.
