That s precisely what UMUC s Communication, Arts, and Humanities programs can prepare you to do. You can choose from seven majors, 12 minors, and three certificates. COMMUNICATION STUDIES Communication media change rapidly today, and a major in communication studies will help put you ahead of the curve. As a communication studies major, you ll study conflict negotiation, intercultural communication, and the new technologies that are used to design and deliver messages from social networking communications to commercial advertisements. COMPUTER NETWORKs AND SECURITY The computer networks and security major prepares students to enter or advance in computer networking fields where industry-standard certifications are considered essential in hiring and promotion decisions. The curriculum focuses on the techniques, policies, operational procedures, and technologies needed to design, implement, administer, secure, and troubleshoot enterprise-level networks. It can prepare you for a career as a network manager, systems administrator, or network security analyst. The program also provides the opportunity for you to prepare for IT industry certification exams, including the Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification, Cisco Certified Network 8

COMPUTER SCIENCE If you have a strong background in mathematics and an interest in the theory, practice, and science of computer programming, this major is for you. Our world is rapidly becoming a global community, bringing with it an ever-expanding list of challenges, including national security, disaster preparedness, and emerging issues in justice and the law. These critical needs call for professionals who are equipped with both the latest knowledge and field-tested techniques. That s precisely what UMUC s programs deliver. UMUC offers seven majors, six minors, and four certificates B designed to help you prepare for or advance in careers ranging from emergency preparedness and security to legal studies and political science. CRIMINAL JUSTICE Criminal justice is a dynamic field, filled with opportunities for people with a thorough understanding of current and emerging criminal justice issues. As a criminal justice major, you ll learn the nature of crime and the institutions and processes that prevent and respond to it in a democratic society. You ll also discover the role of police, courts, and corrections in the administration of justice, while developing a coherent base of job-related skills. UMUC s criminal justice offerings have been developed in consultation with professional organizations like the American Correctional Association and the American Society of Industrial Security. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, all-hazards emergency response and the coordination of response services have become vital concerns. UMUC s major in emergency management focuses on disaster prevention, planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery. It covers needs and issues, operations management, planning and response, and terrorism. Coursework may also fulfill requirements related to the National Fire Protection Association Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs and professional certification as an emergency manager. FIRE SERVICE ADMINISTRATION UMUC s fire service administration program covers the management and administration of fire-protection services and provides an understanding of interagency coordination, as well as analytical approaches to investigation and program management. It is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to help you pursue a management-level position in a public, private, or military fire department. The fire service administration program is endorsed by the U.S. Fire Administration s National Fire Academy and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. UMUC is part of the national Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) network and one of only seven accredited colleges and universities in the country participating in the National Fire Academy s Degrees at a Distance Program. HOMELAND SECURITY The homeland security major focuses on the domestic and international security issues of homeland security, including international and domestic terrorism, infrastructure protection, intelligence operations and evaluation, and strategic planning and program management. The program provides a global outlook, awareness of current issues, and interpersonal and management skills to help you become a leader in government and industry security. 10

13 INVESTIGATIVE FORENSICS A key element within the field of criminal investigation today is the work of forensics specialists the people who gather, process, and report on physical evidence from crime scenes in discovering the facts of a case. The role of forensics is also expanding within the field of civil justice. A major in investigative forensics provides the foundation you ll need to be part of a collaborative work group in investigative forensics. The curriculum covers fieldwork and evidence detection, collection, and reporting, as well as criminal procedure and digital analysis of evidence. You ll gain practical experience through specialization in digital or scientific coursework. LEGAL STUDIES Fueled by increasing demand for legal services, rising costs, and technologies that are altering the way law firms, courts, and government agencies operate, the legal profession remains one of the most dynamic fields in the country. The curriculum follows national standards and addresses the organization, function, and processes of lawmaking institutions, legal specialties, and legal ethics. The coursework emphasizes legal analysis, legal writing, legal research, and the use of technology. POLITICAL SCIENCE UMUC s political science program not only provides academic knowledge of American politics, comparative government, international relations, and political theory and methodology, but it also addresses how political theory relates to its actual application. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Over the past several decades, global environmental issues have come to the forefront. The environmental management major helps prepare you to become an environmental manager who not only understands all aspects of this changing industry, but also possesses valuable skills in areas such as critical thinking, problem solving, project management, interpersonal relations, and team building. The UMUC gerontology major can help you prepare for a career as a gerontological services manager, program planner, program/policy analyst, product/service developer, or senior housing manager by equipping you with the skills needed to implement and manage gerontological health and human services programs. Through your studies, you ll learn about various aspects of aging and gain an understanding of the programs, services, and policies related to aging and older adults.
