2 Field Education Curricular Requirements Students in the online MSW program complete 1,125 hours of field work during the program, 450 in the first three semesters of placement (foundation field education practicum 1, 2 and 3) and 675 in the following four semesters of placement (advanced field education practicum 4, 5, 6 and 7.) The schedules are as follows: Hours per Week # of Weeks Term Total Hours Foundation Summer Fall Spring Total Foundation 450 Advanced Summer Fall Spring Summer 135 Total Advanced 675 Courses must be taken in the above sequence and field hours must be completed in the above sequence. Only after successful completion of the professional foundation courses, foundation field hours and the statistics requirement, can students begin the advanced curriculum. FALL START Professional Foundation All students, except those with baccalaureate degrees from programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, are required to take all of the foundation courses. These courses contain a body of knowledge, values, and skills essential for social work practice. This common base is transferable among settings, population groups, and problem areas. The foundation curriculum consists of courses in generalist social work practice with corresponding field instruction, human behavior and the social environment, psychopathology, introductory social work research methods, social welfare policy and services, and a course focused on diversity and oppression. Successful completion of the foundation program is required before beginning the advanced curriculum. 3 Advanced Curriculum The advanced curriculum consists of a concentration in a method of advanced clinical practice, an advanced research course, advanced field instruction, and electives. Only after successful completion of the professional foundation courses and the statistics requirement can students begin the advanced curriculum. Our current online advanced curriculum offers a concentration in clinical social work. Concentration in Clinical Social Work The concentration in Clinical Social Work prepares students to conceptualize, provide, and supervise the delivery of social work services to individuals, couples, families, and small groups. Emphasis is on developing competence in those helping processes used to prevent problems and to enhance, develop, and restore social functioning.
