1 Announcing the 7th Annual South Eastern Nursing Education Symposium (SENSES), where we feature three educational tracks: Novice, Advanced Nurse Educator, and Nursing Faculty. This annual event has provided great opportunities for participants to re-connect with colleagues and network with new ones from all over the country. In addition to many wonderful topics to choose from, we ve allotted plenty of time to visit with our exhibitors, view cutting-edge poster presentations in nursing education, and shop-shop-shop. Part of the NC AHEC Program In affiliation with Duke University Medical Center Credit Earn up to 10.0 contact hours. CNE will be awarded by session. Get examples of good vs. bad slides and receive free Internet resources anyone can use, starting today! 11:00-11:15am Break 11:15-12:15am SESSION 3 Once Upon a Time That s How All Simulation Centers Begin! Allison Abernathy, MSN, RN, Assistant Director, The Center for Lifelong Learning, Cleveland County Healthcare System, Shelby, NC Focus on identifying the steps to take for administrative approval of a simulation center in your hospital, recognizing barriers and obstacles in the start up of a new simulation center, and maximizing the effective use of your new simulation center for all staff not just nurses. Don t Get MAD Get Glad Cathy C Fox, RN, CEN, CPEN, ED Staff RN This session will discuss alternatives to moving away from annual skills fair or education day to a monthly MAD (Mandatory Annual Day). Learn how one department moved away from a 3-5 day annual skills fair to a monthly annual day and improved staff satisfaction, lowered departmental costs, and improved competence among their staff. Staff can now plan ahead for their MAD day and insure they remain competent and continue to meet their mandatory requirements. Debriefing After Simulation: Lessons Learned From an Interdisciplinary Clinical Emergencies Course Patricia Toth, MSN, RN, Professional Development Specialist, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA Teams discuss their thoughts and fears during the simulation, how they could have worked differently. Several scenarios are completed and debriefed throughout the afternoon. Learn how to improve patient safety and outcomes through collaboration and increased confidence during a clinical emergency. Changing Student Demographics: Is There a Correlation To Changes In Civility In Nursing Education? Genifer J. Johnson MSN, RN, Nursing Program Interim Chair, ITT Technical Institute, West Palm Beach, FL This session provides an opportunity for nurse educators to view the changes that have occurred in the student population, and to recognize the loss of civility that has occurred simultaneously. Strategies for improving civility in the classroom and clinical environments will be explored. What Works? A Winning Approach To Collaboratively Meeting Magnet and IOM Educational Objectives. Learn how to help improve your approach to employee development. 2:15-3:00pm 3:00-4:00pm SESSION 5 Positive Attitudes, Positive Outcomes, Get On the Bus Gus Cathy C Fox, RN, CEN, CPEN This session is designed to assist the nurse educator with engaging his/her entire department to change their negative energy into positive energy. Learn how an ED turned a lot of their "negative nellies" into "positive bus riders". Give your staff the tools they need to want to come to work everyday and make a real difference in people s lives. Come hear how riding the positive energy bus can change your life. 4:00-4:10pm Break with Exhibitors Break 4:10-5:10pm SESSION 6 Empowerment of Nursing Staff As a Factor In Performance In Healthcare Denise McNulty, DNP, MSN, RN-BC, ARNP, Director of Nursing and Faculty Member, The Willough at Naples and Edison State College, Naples, FL The presentation is evidence based and is derived from a comprehensive review of the literature on nursing empowerment in the workplace. This session addresses the nurse's perception of his/her psychological empowerment and the impact this has on patient care and patient outcomes. The presenter will demonstrate how using professional development seminars for nurses can improve the nurse's perception of his/her empowerment in the workplace. Using Simulation To Improve Processes In the Healthcare Environment: It Can Be Done! Mary E. Holtschneider, MPA, BSN, RN-BC, NREMT-P, Nurse Educator/Healthcare Simulation Educator, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Durham, NC Another use for simulation is referred to as predictive simulation, in which new processes are tested to see how they really work rather than how we hope they will work. This session will focus on how to best achieve change management in the healthcare environment through simulation methodologies. Thea Eckman MSN, RN-BC, CCRN, Staff Education Specialist, Christiana Care Health System, Newark, DE This presentation will look at possible ways to provide the required education beyond and traditional classroom approaches. Topics covered include a review of generational differences, engaging staff/creating buy-in, and examples of different presentation formats and resources. Rocking the Boat With a New Competencybased Orientation (CBO) Leigh Dangerfield, MSN, RN, PCCN, Unit Educator & Kris Douglass, MS, RN, Nurse Educator, Clinical Education Department, both at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC Explore the process of introducing a new CBO at a 700 bed academic hospital-based institution. We will begin with the evaluation of the existing competency based orientation (CBO), and talk about the development and design of a new, standardized CBO format. Goals, problems encountered, facilitating change, staff education, and recommendations will be presented. Evaluation of Student Nurse Satisfaction and Self Confidence During a Simulated Home Health Nursing Visit With a Standardized Patient Debra Ezzell, RN, MSN, Simulation Education Specialist, UNC- Wilmington, Wilmington, NC The purpose of this session is to present the findings of a research study designed to explore student satisfaction and self confidence during a simulated home health nursing visit with a Standardized Patient in the home care setting. Interactive Teaching Strategies and the Effect On Knowledge and Outcomes Rhonda D. Schleider, BSN, RN,CCRN, Nursing Education Specialist, Mission Hospitals, Asheville, NC Interactive teaching methods are widely used as a means to engage the student to enhance learning. This project compares teaching methods to determine effectiveness of interactive teaching strategies. Managing the Student Precepted Experience Cathy Gage, MHA, RN-BC, Professional Development Coordinator, UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC This presentation will address practical and logistical factors of student clinical experiences, as well as offer session attendees the opportunity to discuss goals of the precepting experience from multiple and perhaps conflicting view points. 5:10pm Adjourn for the Day

Kautz, PhD, RN, CRRN, CNE, Associate Professor of Nursing, UNC-Greensboro, Greensboro, NC Learn about the many different ways of teaching Acid Base Balance and Fluid & Electrolyte Imbalances. This session includes posters, case studies, test and retest, flow diagrams, one page table summaries, 10-minute, a 50-minute lectures, and short movies. The Burning Platform: Patient Safety Across the Nursing Continuum Martha Boutin White, MBA, BSN, RN, BSE, Patient Safety Officer, Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah, GA By presenting patient safety through stories and statistics, then making it personal with audience interaction, a burning platform is established. We will share techniques that introduce patient safety throughout the curriculum, so educators can be on the cutting edge of safety reform. 9:00-10:00am Break & Poster Presentations SESSION 8 10:00-11:00am SESSION 9 Meep, Meep, Gone!!! Brenda M. Whitlock, BSN, RN, MHA, Systems Educator, Granville Health System, Oxford, NC This session will explore some of the reasons for high turnover rates due to the possibility of the multitasking the preceptor and personal conflict. Identify potential roadblocks to the success of precepting. Games As a Learning Tool: The Whys and Hows Michelle Leavitt This session is where you will learn the science and theory behind gaming as a learning tool, tips for turning your existing content into games, and pointers on using two different software tools to actually create games. Do It My Way: Teaching Communication Methods To Multiple Generations Martha Boutin White, MBA, BSN, RN, BSE Mentoring nurses to clearly communicate, coach each other and provide quality patient care requires a multifaceted communication plan. Innovative communication tools fill the chasm and promote incorporation of the message into everyday practices. This interactive session concentrates on giving and receiving the message intended. 11:15-12:15pm Closing Session & Door Prizes SESSION 10 Great Nursing Staff Educators Create the Art, Science and Magic of Nursing Donald D. Kautz, PhD, RN, CRRN, CNE Are you a great nurse educator? Don has educated nurses for 30 years, and has worked with and known many great nurse educators. Yet, he also knows that no one can be a great nursing staff educator all the time. In our quest to be recognized as caring, Magnet, safe, and accredited organizations, we must demonstrate that we are great. Don will share his passion, delight, and wonder for being a nursing staff educator. But most importantly, he will illustrate the power of art and science to create magic as a nurse educator.
