1 CHAPTER NEWS HELIOS #19 X CLEARWATER Louis A. Thomas (ΤΣΟΥΝΟΣ), Community and Church Leader Louis A. Thomas (Τσουνος), a community and Greek Orthodox Church leader, died in Clearwater, Fl, on Monday, November 17, 2003 at the age of 84. Chapter Helios members and friends pose for a group photo Louis (Ιλιας) was born in very humble circumstances in a home with the assistance of a midwife in Verona, PA, on February 1, He was the son of Σοφια (Γεµελας) and Ανδρεας Τσουνος who emigrated from Ikaria with no formal education. Due to the hard economic times, at the age of two, Louis, with his mother and older and younger sisters Anna and Stella, left for Ikaria. During the family s stay in Ikaria, sister Anna died of illness. Louis did not return to Verona until the age of eight, unable to speak a word of English. From these humble beginnings, Louis lived the American dream, serving as an officer in WW II, graduating from college, educating his children, and serving his community and the Greek Orthodox Church throughout his life. A crowded dance floor...opa! Following high school Louis, not able to afford college at the time, worked as a postman and at a local steel mill close to Verona. He enlisted in the Army in early 1941, transferred into the Army Air Corp shortly before Pearl Harbor, and ascended from the rank of Private to First Lieutenant before the end of the war. He primarily served state side as a training officer, teaching other flight engineers of B29 bombers. After the war, Louis continued as an officer in the Air Force Reserves until he was Honorably Discharged in His dream of college was fulfilled, when, under the GI bill, he enrolled and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in three years with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Degree. 2 CHAPTER NEWS HELIOS #19 CLEARWATER Typical of Louis, while working and going to school, he was also successful in 1947 of selecting the perfect bride, Stella, daughter of Elizabeth and George V. Pastis of Cleveland, OH. Louis worked as a Civil Engineer in the Pittsburgh area for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad and later was employed by Ryerson/Inland Steel, Pittsburgh. In 1959, Louis was transferred from Pittsburgh to South Bend, IN, to serve as Inland/Ryerson Reinforcing Steel Area Manager. In 1975 Louis founded his own company, the L.A. Thomas Engineering Corp., where he worked until retirement. Louis served many years on the South Bend St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church Parish Council including two times as President during critical times in the community s history. He has the distinction of being the first lay President of St. Andrews in Prior to that year the Parish Priest served as President. He was elected from a board appointed at a General Assembly by Archbishop Iakovos, Archbishop of North and South America, who dismissed the previous board and reassigned its Priest after a church controversy. Louis also served as President in 1975 and 1976 and, with other dedicated church leaders, guided the community in the purchase of property and the development of plans for the building of their existing church in the northern suburbs of South Bend. Louis service included many years as a Master Mason (Consistory 32) and with the Kiwanis International including Kiwanis President during 1975 and Both organizations have as their beneficiary ill children with Kiwanis helping crippled children and the Mason s charity being the Shriner Hospitals. He taught his children and grandchildren the rewards of commitment to education, family, church and community. His oldest son Andrew is a graduate of Notre Dame with a BA Degree and has a Law Degree from the University of Indiana. Andrew currently owns and runs his law practice in Evansville, Indiana. His youngest son George has a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and co-owns and operates a Consulting Engineering company in Cleveland Ohio. Louis moved to Clearwater, Florida, and to Lakewood Ohio with his wife Stella upon their retirement together in He continued his active life serving as Circulation Manager for Ikaria magazine, assisting his wife Stella while she was the editor of Ikaria Magazine. He was a member of the Clearwater, FL, Helios Chapter of the Pan- Icarian Brotherhood, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater, St. Demetrios Church in Rocky River, OH, Order of AHEPA, and the American Legion. Before his illnesses, Louis enjoyed traveling, having made several trips to Ikaria, cooking, golfing, gardening and enjoyed many happy times being entertained by his grandchildren. As Louis and his wife Stella grew older, they were known not only for their kindness, warmth, cheerfulness and generosity, but also for their great love and commitment to each other. They determinedly fought the ravages of Louis illnesses together with great courage, dignity, and cooperation with those who were treating him. Stella was constantly at Louis side doing everything she could to comfort him during his last three month ordeal fighting colon cancer, an accident, and several infections. In addition to his wife and children, Louis survivors include his daughters-in-law, Marcia and Crystal; grandchildren, Louis, Stefanie, Joy and Stacey; sister Stella Marangoni and brother George (Mary) Tsounos of Verona, Pennsylvania. We hope all of you have a safe and prosperous new year! In November we had a visit from the Supreme Lodge President George Horiates at the home of Paul and Toula Manos for a meeting and dinner. 5 CHAPTER NEWS DRAKANON #24 X PARMA In December we had our Christmas party for all members. It was a fun time for all. We all enjoyed a catered affair at a local restaurant and we were paid a visit from that jolly man himself, Santa. All the children and adults enjoyed spending some time with old Saint Nick. The convention in Pittsburgh was outstanding and all our Chapter members who attended had a great time. Likewise the holidays were great. Our Christmas party with Agia Marina Ladies Auxiliary was very enjoyable. Congratulations to our new officers for 2004: Elias Ploutis, President Costa Glaros, Vice President Angie Dalis, Secretary Karen Ploutis, Treasurer Our Chapter is planning our annual Horosperida for January 24, 2004 and we re looking forward to having another great turn out. Committee members are already planning our Mother s Day Brunch since it was so successful last year. Our Chapter was blessed with many happy events this past year. Congratulations to John Tsahas, son of Stelios and Roula Tsahas, on his marriage to Maria Antoniadis. Congratulations to Costas and Anna Glaros on the birth of their son, Panayiotis; to Mike and Maria Tsampis on the birth of their son, Christopher; to Apostoli & Stacey Collaros, who welcomed son Fotis to their family; and to Fotis & Domina Vardaros whose son was born in December. Congratulations also go to Alaina Gemelas, daughter of Jim and Kelly Gemelas, on receiving one of the Brotherhood Scholarships. Our chapter is looking forward to the coming year with hopes of increasing our membership and getting even more participation at our social functions. 6 Icaros Statue Unveiled at Pharos Airport The highlight of the Centennial festivities in Icaria was the unveiling of the Icaros statue by the sculptor John Houtrides at the Pharos airport. Attended by over three hundred people including dignitaries, government officials and church leaders, the celebration took on a holiday spirit. Speakers at the event were the Eparhos of Icaria, George Kritikos, former Eparhos Stephanos Pamphilis, Bishop Efsevios, Foundation Chairman Anthony Kayafas, John Tsantes and many others. The bronze plaque at the base of the statue with its message to the Icarians. The Houtrides statue in all its splendor. 7 Digital Photography Tips on Ikaria NIGHT Much of an Ikarian vacation is enjoyed at night in the village tavernas and sea side clubs. The nightlife offers several opportunities to photograph fellow Ikarians. A simple flash shot is sufficient for documenting friends. The problem at night is when you try to capture the atmosphere. Ikaria is not known for being well lit, and attempts to capture panigiria or a village plaza often come out too dark or blurred. The best way photograph a dark night landscape is to turn off the flash, set the timer, and place the camera on a stable surface. With the flash off the background is brought into the photograph. The timer allows the camera to take a photo without being touched. A night photo requires the lens to be open for several seconds and the slightest movement can cause a blurry image. A good location to set the camera is also key. Some people carry around tripods, but usually a pop can on a table can be used to frame the image. BEACH An Ikarian summer is not complete without several hours a day spent on the beach. Unfortunately the beach is not the most camera friendly environment. The salty mist of the waves dusts the lenses, and all the fine grains of sand can cause interference with the camera s Japanese precision. Bringing a camera to the beach everyday is not suggested, but 2 or 3 times during a vacation usually captures the experience. Beach photos tend to come out over exposed because they are mostly taken in the midday sun. People s faces tend to be hidden in the shadows of hats and umbrellas. The bright landscape also causes problems with backlighting, where a figure in a cantina will appear as a silhouette with loss of detail in the foreground and over emphasis on the background. Some cameras have a backlight feature to combat this problem, and sometimes using the flash will also help. SUNSETS No trip to Ikaria is complete without a sunset photo. Turning the flash off on the camera will prevent foreground from being overemphasized and allow the sunset to remain the subject of the photo. If people pose in front of the sunset they will be backlit and appear as silhouettes. Why does the sun look smaller than you remember? It is a matter of perspective. The sun does not change size. To make the sun appear big the foreground must change size. In other words stand far away from an object like a church and the church will appear smaller compared to the sun. With the camera zoom in to frame the photo as if you were standing near the church. The result is a giant sunset appearing next to a little church. The best time of day to take photos is sunset and sunrise. For half an hour a day there is a unique angle of soft light filtered by the atmosphere. Villages, mountains, and people change appearance with the setting sun. During sunrise the winds are the calmest, which means it is the best chance to photograph a wake less sea (lathi). Capturing these unique moments adds visual value to your landscape photos. OTHER TIPS Purchase much memory. I still haven t found a shop on Ikaria that supplies flash cards and memory sticks. Take many photos. On a digital camera you can always go back and erase unwanted photos to make room for more. Have an extra battery. You don t want your camera to spend half the vacation recharging. Don t let your camera consume your vacation. It is good to leave it behind once in a while. 8 Introducing the Hellenic Cultural Center s Ikarian Visual Arts Program Perhaps you have heard of Kentro Ellinikou Politismou (the Hellenic Cultural Center) near the village of Arethousa high in the mountains of Ikaria. Perhaps you are even familiar with the modern Greek language courses that the center has run since 1995, both in Ikaria and in Athens. But, you have probably not heard of the Ikarian Visual Arts Program Greek Landscape Painting which offers its artist participants a great variety of dramatic Ikarian landscapes from lush forests to barren rocky mountain sides, picturesque villages and splendid beaches. The modern Greek language courses at Kentro Ellinikou Politismou are intended for adults of any nationality who wish to learn Greek, or improve their current skills, while getting to know Greece and its culture. The Center is about one kilometer from Arethousa, and sits above the seaside village of Karavostamo. The port city of Evdilos is seven kilometers away. Classes are held Monday to Friday and each course is A painting from the 2002 class two weeks long. The Center s coordinator in Ikaria is Mihalis Kavouriaris and he is available year-round to assist students and answer inquiries. ikaria@hcc.gr. The center s web address is The Ikarian Visual Arts Program was first conducted in April One corner of the studio at the Ikarian Center The Center s location offers participants stunning vistas and fosters a creative and adventurous spirit. Working mostly outdoors, the 2002 group created a range of work in oils, pastels, acrylic and even some small-scale sculpture. An informal group exhibition was held at the conclusion of the course and was well attended by residents in the area; some of whom had developed a keen interest in what this group of visiting artists was doing. The Program uses an independent study approach wherein each participant determines his or her own interests and goals in consultation with the Program s Artist-in-Residence and Instructor, Tom Campbell.Visit Tom s website at This years Program offers two sessions and participants may elect to take one or both. The sessions will run from May 31 to June 11, and from June 14 to 25, June in Ikaria will be particularly good for painting outdoors. Classes are small and intimate with a maximum of eight participants in each session. The program is open to participants at all stages of artistic development who are enrolled in full- or part-time Fine Arts programs in North America or the European Union, or who have completed a program of study and wish to further develop their skills. While the Program is taught in English, participants of all languages are encouraged to attend. One of the goals of our Program is to promote international exchange between artists. Fees include instruction, accommodation in the Center s hostel and transportation on Ikaria. For this year s Program, per session fees in $US, are $1225 (single occupancy), and $925 (double occupancy). Fees in Canadian dollars are $1600 and $1200, respectively. While Program participants purchase their own airline tickets, travel and medical insurance, our 2004 Course Administrator, Dave McIntosh is available and eager to help with travel arrangements.
