4 Diabetes is a huge and growing problem

5 and even worse than it appears DIABETES IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE (pre-diabetes) (millions) out of 5 cases will be in LMICs and a majority of the cases will be in people of working age. Diabetes is not just a health issue but also a development issue.

6 and the costs to society are high and escalating Diabetes kills one person every six seconds 5.1 million deaths due to diabetes in 2013 USD 548 billion spent on care, treatment, and medicines in 2013 Not including costs related to lost productivity losses to individuals and society.

7 Diabetes Atlas Germany $ 4,718 USD per patient with diabetes Ethiopia $29 USD per patient with diabetes IDF is calling for UHC to be recognised as a primary human right

8 We have achieved: 2006: UN Resolution for Diabetes Global Campaigns IDF has a network of National Diabetes Associations throughout the world who have worked together to press governments to recognize that diabetes is a global development priority requiring an urgent response. IDF was one of the earliest voices calling for a UN High-Level Summit on Non-communicable diseases. IDF formed the NCD Alliance in 2009 with our sister federations in heart, cancer and chronic respiratory disease to campaign for a UN Summit. 2011: UN High-Level Summit on NCDs Resulted in Political Declaration NCD Prevention & Control. 2013: The 66th World Health Assembly Resolution WHA has adopted a global target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases by Governments agreed a target to halt the rise in diabetes and obesity by 2025 diabetes is the only NCD with its own target. With IDF estimating that 100 million people with diabetes lack access to essential treatment and care, the target for 80% availability of essential medicines and technologies is truly a lifesaving target.

Coordinates local projects for the National Diabetes Association Motivates other young people to volunteer Shares experiences & best practices with other Young Leaders Represents young people with diabetes in IDF

10 Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network Members of more than 50 Parliaments, many of them with diabetes themselves, signed the Melbourne Declaration on Diabetes at the World Diabetes Congress 2013 They created a Global Network of Members of National and State Parliaments to ensure that diabetes is, and remains high on the political agenda in every country It acknowledges the increasingly serious social, economic and medical threat faced by nations

11 Charter of Rights and Responsibilities of People with Diabetes Gold standard Right to care Right to information/education Right to social justice Sets out the responsibilities of people with diabetes Freedom from discrimination Identify high-profile global champions for diabetes New strategic alliances IDF will publish a Storybook in June 2014 with stories that fall under one of the three themes of the International Charter of Rights and Responsibilities

12 Humanitarian aid IDF is working to extend healthcare in developing countries

13 IDF will continue a concentrated substantial campaigning effort in making the case for responding to the diabetes challenge in the global agenda. Patients are at the centre of our campaigns. Together we need to continue dialogue with governments and international organisations to focus on diabetes prevention, treatment care and support as essential components of universal health coverage Forthcoming major events: Next steps May 2014: World Health Assembly 2014: UN Review on NCDs Final push in the discussion on post 2015 Development Framework
