3 Welcome Note From what started as an idea in our final year at school The Nigeria Diabetes Online Community has grown to be the foremost youth led diabetes organization in Nigeria. With a Mission to raise the health and wellness of all people with diabetes and related chronic conditions through awareness of healthy lifestyles, prevention and management of diabetes and a vision to have a diabetes advocate in every Nigerian family we have been relentless in achieving our goals. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) diabetes atlas, sixth edition published in 2013, 382 million people have diabetes globally and about 175 million others are undiagnosed. 1 in 20 adults are diabetic. $548 billion in health expenditure was spent on diabetes care globally (11% of total budget on health). Currently, an estimated 19.8 million adults in Africa have diabetes a regional prevalence of 4.9%. Nigeria has the highest number of people living with diabetes in Africa (3.9 million) and about 1.8 million cases are undiagnosed. An estimated 522,600 people in the Africa died from diabetes-related causes in , 091 of these occurred in Nigeria. 76% of deaths due to Diabetes Mellitus in Africa occur before age of 60 years. With the aim of achieving maximal impact in diabetes prevention and care with minimal funding The Nigeria diabetes online community started and through commitment of the directors and volunteers we have been able to achieve a lot. With immense thanks to our volunteers, supporters, partners, global diabetes online community, we have witnessed tremendous growth despite numerous challenges. Changing the world a step at a time is what we believe in and putting smiles on faces gears us to do more. Even though there is still much to achieve we strive to be way much better than we already are. Adejumo Olamide H., Co-Founder/Director of Operations, The Nigeria Diabetes Community. 3 P a g e
4 Nigeria According to The International Diabetes Federation, financial estimate of Africa indicate that at least USD2.8billion was spent on health care due to diabetes alone in 2011 and this is expected to rise by 61% in Africa, a multicultural, religious and ethnically diverse continent had traditionally been dominated by infectious diseases but with rapid urbanization, NCD s are quickly becoming a priority for health in this continent. Nigeria is often referred to as the Giant of Africa owing to the large population and economy. With approximately 174 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the 7 th most populous country in the world. Nigeria also has one of the largest youth in the world. Nigeria has the highest number of people living with diabetes in Africa (3.9 million) and about 1.8 million cases are undiagnosed. An estimated 522,600 people in the Africa died from diabetes-related causes in 2013; 105,091 of these occurred in Nigeria. It is however imperative based on the facts above that health care system must understand Africa s multicultural settings, religious inclinations and embrace its ethnic diversity to strategize a befitting and community based appropriate health care system that put into consideration and accommodate the African mindset towards containing the anticipated rise in diabetes cases by P a g e
