4 NJS Online - Article 32 Investigating Officer This LAWgo covers Article 32 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Article 32 requires a thorough and impartial investigation before every general courtmartial. This LAWgo is designed to be a practical course for the Investigating Officer (IO), although any participant in an upcoming investigation may find the materials helpful. It gives a general orientation to the purpose and structure of the Article 32 investigation, from appointment of the IO, through the conduct of the hearing, and submission of the IO s report. NJS Online - Defending the Mentally Ill This LAWgo will introduce various topics relating to successful practices and strategies in defending an accused who may have issues with respect to competency for trial. NJS Online - Estate Planning Refresher This is a four unit course on estate planning. Students MUST have access to DL Wills software to participate in this course. The course will walk through basic estate planning, to include pre-residuary trusts, residuary trusts, SGLI, DD-93, health care powers of attorney, living wills, durable financial powers of attorney and creating blended family wills. Students will engage the subject matter through a combination of practical exercises, short video lectures, and will drafting, with an anticipated work load of 2-4 hours per unit. NJS Online - Ethics for Defense Counsel This is an introductory level course with focus on reinforcing the ethical responsibilities of a Defense Counsel (DC). The course will cover three topic areas: 1) dealing ethically with your client, 2) dealing ethically with the Court, and 3) working ethically with opposing counsel. While the civilian and military justice systems share many similarities, it is important that a Coast Guard Legal Technician understand the very distinct differences between the two. NJS Online - Law of The Sea This four-week course begins with a primer on the law of the sea and then moves into more advanced topics to include excessive maritime claims with exploration of the current tension in the South China Sea, the law of naval mining, and will conclude with anti-piracy operations. Instructors will include current and former professors from the Naval War College - Professor Raul (Pete) Pedrozo, Professor Sean Henseler, and CDR James Kraska, USN, JAGC. Students will learn about these topics through a combination of self-paced study, recorded lectures, academic articles, and exams. NJS Online - LN Mid-Level INSTRUCTOR APPROVED: This four-week online course is designed to increase the skill and professional efficiency of military paralegals of the Department of the Navy. Specific areas of instruction include freedom of expression, search and seizure, absence offenses, Freedom of Information Act, legal assistance, charge sheet preparation, and adminstrative separations. Prerequisites: This course is open to second-tour Legalmen in paygrades E-5 and E-6. NJS Online - Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) This course will outline the protections afforded to military spouses under the MSRRA, and provide practical guidance for invoking those protections. NJS Online - Multi-Week Survey NJS Online - Naval Mining INVITATION ONLY: This is a three month follow up survey course for the Naval Justice School's multi-week instruction. This LAWgo is a 2-3 hours course and provides an overview of the legal aspects of Naval Mining with special emphasis on Iran and the Straits of Hormuz. NJS Online - Non-Federal Entities and Outside Activities NJS Online - NJP for the Staff Judge Advocate This course will discuss Navy policies and procedures for interacting with Non- Federal Entities, as well as the rules for personnel engaged in activities outside of DoD. This course will discuss the rules governing Article 15 hearings and Non-Judicial Punishment, and the SJA's role in the process. NJS Online - Notary Certification Process This self-paced course contains the training necessary to complete the Navy's notary certification requirements. To obtain certification, students must score at least a 75 on the assessment. You will have two opportunities to pass the assessment, and you may use any resource you like in taking the test. This course will review the limitations put in place on O-5 commanders and will emphasize which offenses must be forwarded to the SA-IDA for disposition.
