1 BELLIN COLLEGE OF NURSING 1 SUBJECT OR TOPIC TITLE.Mission: Examination of current and revision to coincide with by-laws BALDRIDGE CRITERIA # 1 Leadership 1.1a: Vison and Values: Mission, vision and values set the context for strategic objectives. It is appropriate to review the mission for its timeliness and relevance as the College progresses into the 21 st century and toward its centennial in DATE OF REPORT & ACADEMIC YEAR November 1, 2007 Academic Year: COMMITTEE/GROUP MEMBERS (designate leader or chair if applicable) Kathy Zellner, Facilitator, CAP Director, representing Faculty Vera Dauffenbach, Director of Graduate Program, representing Faculty Lena Goodman, Director Financial Aid, representing Staff Jo Woelfel, VP Student Services, representing Administration INTRODUCTION (succinct statement about subject or topic) The College Mission was last reviewed in 2002, prior to full implementation of the Graduate Nursing program. Continued exploration of new opportunities suggests that the mission be reviewed for continued timeliness and appropriateness.
2 BELLIN COLLEGE OF NURSING 2 RATIONALE FOR THE WORK (background and purpose) In spring 2007, with new partnerships being developed (St. Norbert College) and others being considered, the College held discussions regarding relooking at the College's mission, purposes and values and their alignment with the College by-laws. The mission was last reviewed in 2002, at which time language was clarified. Further work was delayed until after final approval on the implementation of the Graduate Program was received. Having accomplished that, and with two successful accreditions having occurred since, the decision now is to review the mission to determine and assure appropriateness as the College continues to grow and explore new opportunities. STAKEHOLDERS College Administration, Staff and Faculty Current and prospective students Partnering colleges and universities Current and prospective employers of our graduates KEY PROCESSES USED (e.g.: survey, interview, data collection sheets as appropriate) Missions from a broad group of educational institutions were reviewed. The College values and purposes were used as reference to assure that these were addressed in the formulation of the new mission. PLAN OF WORK (include the study outcomes and planned timeline) See attached for recommended changes. The committee met to review and discuss the current mission as well as the missions available from other educational institutions. Key terms pertinent to the College's main function were identified. Discussion was held that included a need to provide a mission statement that was broad enough to include other health care services while still addressing our primary educational focus: nursing.
3 BELLIN COLLEGE OF NURSING 3 FINDINGS (or outcomes) of the study Current mission statement is unusually long when compared to mission statements of other colleges and universities. Current mission statement refers to "nursing" as its only focus RECOMMENDATIONS RATIONALE TIMELINE Proposed Actual Shorten the statement with key A shorter mission statement is consistent November words or phrases that capture the with that other colleges and universities essence of who Bellin College is and what Bellin College does.
