3 Community Colleges & Public Health ASPPH + League for Innovation in the Community College co-sponsored with funding from HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health Developed prototype curricular frameworks and course content outlines in collaboration with SOPHE, AUPHA, AEHAP, ASTHO, and NACCHO and consultation with AAC&U Public Health: Generalist and Specialization- associate degrees designed for transfer Health Navigator programs- Certificates, Applied Associate degrees and Associate degrees for transfer

4 Prototype Curricular Models Designed as 30 semester credit hours as part of a 60 credit hour associate degree including the following Foundation and core public health curriculum Specialty curriculum or generalist course work Experiential learning Electives Content outlines developed for Foundation and core public health curriculum plus specialty curricula included as appendix in CC&PH report available at

5 Foundational and Core Curricula Both prototype curricular frameworks recommend: General education emphasizing oral and written communications skills and basic quantitative skills Human Health/Personal Health and Wellness including focus on population health and determinants of health Overview of Public Health Health Communications

6 Public Health: Generalist & Specializations Three specializations and a generalist program outlined in report including specialized course work, experiential learning, and electives. Specializations include: Health Education Health Administration Environmental Health Generalist programs includes introductory course in each of the above areas

7 Health Education Associate degree for Transfer SOPHE Task Force on Community Colleges developed content outlines for three health education courses as part of a specialization in Health Education 1. Introduction to Health Education 2. Accessing and Analyzing Health Information 3. Public Health Advocacy and Leadership in Action

8 Environmental Health Associate degree for transfer Developed in collaboration with Association of Environmental Health Academic Programs (AEHAP) including content outlines for each course Principles of Environmental Health plus any two of the following Disease Vectors and Control Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Food Safety and Sanitation

9 Health Administration Associate degree for Transfer Developed in collaboration with the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) including content outlines for each course Introduction to Health Administration and the U.S. Health System Management of Health Organizations Health Information Systems

10 Health Navigator Designed as a academic degree or certificate program to prepare to work as community health worker, patient navigator, health insurance navigator etc. in a range of types of health systems Includes required course work in accessing and analyzing health information, prevention & community health, health care delivery, and health insurance Experiential curricula and electives also outlined in CC&PH report

11 Health Navigator Curriculum 30 semester credit hours for academic certificate or as part of associate degree Foundation and core courses plus Accessing and Analyzing Health Information Prevention and Community Health Health Care Delivery Health Insurance Experiential Learning and electives Course content outlines provided in report for each course

Health Navigator programs may be academic certificate programs, applied associate degrees designed for transfer to bachelor s degree in Health Education Flexibility is encouraged to accommodate local job market and state regulations May be offered as an academic certificate program for those with previous bachelor s degree or as add-on for other programs such as nursing or social work

13 SOPHE and CC&PH Efforts Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) created SOPHE Community College Task Force which will continue to work with the CC&PH project. SOPHE Task Force designed Health Education specialization and endorsed development of associate degree programs designed to articulate with bachelor s degree programs in health education SOPHE Board has endorsed an active role in the implementation phase to begin in early 2015.

16 Call for Planning Open to individual community colleges and community college systems Open to new and existing public health programs Partnerships with transfer institutions are encouraged but not required

17 Eligible Institutions Community colleges or systems notified of eligibility by May 1, 2015 Webinars with public health academic & practice organizations Opportunities for consultation on program planning and implementation Submit a plan for one or more certificate or associate degree programs by December 31, 2015

18 Recognition Up to 10 community colleges or systems Submit a complete plan Recognition at Innovations Conference Chicago, March 20-23, 2016 $1,000 stipend for Innovations travel expenses Complimentary Innovations registration for one designee from each recognized institution or system

19 Criteria for Review Quality of planning for implementation and evaluation Institutional commitment Evidence of interest and support by students, community college administration, and local community

20 Recognized Colleges Plans posted on League website as part of CC&PH project Participate in authoring article(s) for submission by June 2016 Encouragement to provide advice and consultation to other community colleges

21 Funding Seeking funding to support implementation and evaluation of demonstration programs Recognized community colleges will have priority for this support if funding becomes available
