2 DearColleagues From September 22 to September 25, 2011 the Institute of Immunology of the Dresden Technical University will realize in Dresden (Germany) in cooperation with the Accociation for the Advancement of Immune Diagnostics ( ev.de) and the Section Immunodiagnostics of the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine ( the 10th Dresden SymposiumonAutoantibodies.Thecurrentsymposiumentitled FromPredictiontoPreventionof Autoimmune Diseases will focus on different aspects of the pathogenesis, the prediction, novel treatment regimes and prevention of systemic and organ specific autoimmune diseases as well as autoimmune graft rejections. For this, also rare autoimmunopathies such as autoimmune forms of thromboticmicroangiopathies, nephropathies, myopathiesandcardiomyopathieswillbediscussed. Furthermore it is a tradition of the Dresden meetings to speak about methodical aspects of autoantibodydeterminationsaswellasaboutdiagnosticstrategiesforautoimmunediseases. The purpose of prediction of autoimmune diseases is prevention of the clinical precipitation! In mostdiseaseswithanautoimmunepathology, alongprodromeisassociatedwiththeproductionof disease specific autoantibodies and may provide a window of opportunity to reverse the autoimmune process. However, large prospective studies are necessery to evaluate the risk of diseasedevelopmentinautoantibodypositivepersons.intype1diabetes,autoantibodyassaysmake it possible to accurately identify people at risk of future disease. A similar development can be promisedforrheumatoidarthritis.therefore, bothdiseasesmayserveasmodelsforpreventionand novel treatment strategies. A prerequisite for prevention and curative therapy is the very early or even predictive diagnosis by biomarker analyses. The improvement, optimization and standardizationofautoantibodydeterminationaswellasevaluationstudiesplayanimportantrolein thisprocess.weexpectthatthattheanniversarymeetingonautoantibodieswillstimulateallkindof activitiesregardingpredictionandpreventionofautoimmunediseases. Wehopethatyouwillbeabletojoinusforthisexcitingprogram. KarstenConrad OnbehalfoftheOrganizingCommittee
