Sequence Defining SDN and NFV Last 4 years Last 6 months What happens next for SDN?

Defining SDN and NFV

Technical Definition of Software Defined Networking A network where the control and data planes have been separated.

Technical Definition of Software Defined Networking A network where the control and data planes have been separated. WRONG QUESTION

*Why* SDN?

Why SDN? What is the motivation? The old model was not working in new (cloud) environment Network boxes do not have enough information Innovation is slow Leading vendors are in control, but don t want big changes

Why SDN? What is the motivation? The old model was not working in new (cloud) environment Network boxes do not have enough information Innovation is slow Leading vendors are in control, but don t want big changes A better definition An open and interoperable network architecture / market ecosystem that allows control plane products to be purchased independently of data plane products.

Software-Defined Network Framework Management and Orchestration Application e.g., OpenStack (i.e., Network Virtualization) plugins to network OpenStack Control OpenDaylight A basic conceptual structure from which SDN solutions can be built Example OpenFlow Network Virtualization Physical Infrastructure Compute Storage Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. 10 What is Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV)? Movement to transition away from: specialized (expensive and locked) hardware (inflexible) to a software (flexible) model on common (inexpensive, open) servers

Another important change Early OpenFlow has tried to do two things Decouple control from data plane Make the data plane programmable (this is separate) First (decouple) is a little bit hard, but useful and doable Second is much harder, and benefit is less clear Change has been to focus on these one at a time New effort started to work on #2 as a separate, long term effort

What comes next for SDN?

Early Takeaways: OpenFlow has moved slowly OpenDaylight was unknown No Unified Open SDN architecture yet Gartner trough comes from overpromising, SDN-washing Yet ONF membership grows No alternative open low level interface has appeared But no question that controller convergence needed And no other controller maturing like ODL Yet we know that Service Providers and Web2.0 companies have a strategic need This need is a light to steer by (it provides the main direction) But the industry is maturing. Observers have been forming more realistic expectations

Second Round Takeaways: Relative convergence down the stack (OF, ODL, YANG, NETCONF, REST) Growth at the top of the stack (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc) While the tent continues to grow (Campus, WAN, Optical) Vendors position proprietary as Open ; proprietary has time-to-market advantage SPs and Web2.0 largely holding firm on strategic commitment to Open SDN/NFV

Anticipated Shifts: Visible PoCs become more relevant, compelling Ability to create interoperable SDN improves dramatically Common understanding of Open v Interoperable grows Ability to deploy useful SDN without big dev budget emerges
