3 The Children s Board of Hillsborough County Who We Are The Children s Board of Hillsborough County is an independent special taxing district that was established by Hillsborough County voters in 1988 to improve the lives of children and their families in our community. The Children s Board generates revenue from property tax paid by Hillsborough County property owners. Through a competitive procurement process, the Children s Board invests those dollars in programs and services provided by nonprofit organizations within the County which focus on children prenatal to age 8 and their families. The Children s Board is governed by 10 board members, including five citizens from Hillsborough County appointed by the Governor, the regional director of the Department of Children of Families, an elected juvenile judge from the 13th Judicial Circuit Court, an elected Commissioner from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, an elected School Board member and the Superintendent of Hillsborough County Schools. As required by law, the Children s Board is audited by an independent auditor each year. The Children s Board is one of 8 independent Children s Services Councils in Florida. Our Mission The Children s Board of Hillsborough County promotes the well-being of children and families by uniting community partners, investing in innovative opportunities, and leading the county in best practices so the whole community can realize its full potential.
