Dean of the Rev. Joseph A. Sellinger, S. J., School of Business Loyola University Maryland invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Dean of the Rev. Joseph A. Sellinger, S. J., School of Business. Overview The new Dean of the Sellinger School of Business will establish the Sellinger School as an essential element in Loyola s vision to be the nation s leading Catholic comprehensive university. In so doing, he or she will have the opportunity to lead and support the faculty in achieving standards of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the community; promote efforts to increase diversity in the student body, staff, and faculty; engage enthusiastically with students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; lead fundraising, grant writing, and strategic planning efforts; expand graduate programs and enrollments; partner effectively with the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., regional business communities; and foster the Jesuit, Catholic mission of the institution. The Sellinger School enrolls approximately 1000 full time undergraduate students and 1000 graduate students in part time and weekend MBA programs, a full time Emerging Leaders MBA program, Master s degrees in Finance and Accounting, and certificate programs. Loyola University Maryland: An Introduction Loyola University Maryland aspires to be the nation s leading Catholic comprehensive university. Founded in 1852 to serve a primarily local, commuting population, the University is recognized today as a prestigious, highly selective master s comprehensive university with a strong residential undergraduate program rooted in the Jesuit liberal arts tradition and professional graduate programs at the master s and doctoral levels. Loyola has been ranked among the top five master s universities in the North Region by U.S. News & World Report for the past decade, is among Washington Monthly s top 50 master s universities nationally, and is included in the list of Best Values in Private Colleges in Kiplinger s Personal Finance Magazine. Loyola s Sellinger School of Business is highly rated by Business Week, U.S. News & World Report and Financial Times. The University is proud to host a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. As Loyola has grown and changed, it has

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 2 remained committed to the fundamental principles of Jesuit education: a liberal arts undergraduate core curriculum that emphasizes the integration of knowledge, intellectual curiosity and the power of communication, a conviction that the exercise of reason and the practice of faith are complementary and necessary, a focus on the whole person, and a call for the members of its community to live and serve in the world as committed leaders and servants for the good of others. Loyola offers undergraduate majors in 32 academic fields and minors in 48 fields of study. Graduate degrees are available in business, liberal studies, pastoral counseling, psychology, speech language pathology, theology, and education. In fall 2013, Loyola began offering its first online program, the communication department s Master s of Arts in Emerging Media. The comprehensiveness of these offerings is one of the primary reasons that the school changed its designation in 2009 from Loyola College in Maryland to Loyola University Maryland. Key facts about Loyola University Maryland include: Loyola enrolls approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students. Students represent 34 states and 20 countries. 81 percent of undergraduate students reside on campus. More than 60 percent of undergraduate students study abroad for at least one semester. Loyola has 360 full time faculty members, 84 percent of whom hold terminal degrees. The average undergraduate course size is 25; the average graduate course size is 12. The faculty to student ratio is 1: undergraduate tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees totaled approximately $58,000. Graduate tuition varies by program. Approximately 65 percent of the undergraduate student body receives some form of financial aid from the University. Loyola s six year undergraduate graduation rate is 84 percent. The University competes in the Patriot League in NCAA Division I, fielding teams in seven men s and ten women s sports, and competing with the following Patriot League schools: American University, U.S. Military Academy, Bucknell University, Colgate University, College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, U.S. Naval Academy, and Boston University. The University comprises Loyola College (the College of Arts and Sciences), with programs accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA); the School of Education with programs approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI); and the Sellinger School of Business (AACSBaccredited since 1988). In addition to its main Evergreen Campus in northern Baltimore City, Loyola has two graduate centers (in Timonium, Maryland, and Columbia, Maryland), and it operates three Clinical Centers (on the Evergreen campus in the Loyola Notre Dame Library, in Baltimore at Belvedere Square and in Columbia, Maryland).

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 3 Loyola has a long history of balanced budgets and positive operating margins. The University is supported by an annual operating budget totaling $268M and has an endowment with a market value of approximately $200 million. Loyola s Mission Since its founding in 1852, Loyola has demonstrated a profound commitment to its mission: Loyola University Maryland is a Jesuit, Catholic university committed to the educational and spiritual traditions of the Society of Jesus and to the ideals of liberal education and the development of the whole person. Accordingly, the University will inspire students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world. The Jesuit philosophy strives to educate women and men of competence, imbued with the desire to seek the greater glory of God in all things. At Loyola, this ideal is further underscored by the guiding belief that a Catholic university is truly Catholic only insofar as it is truly a university, committed to education that looks critically at the human condition, raises fundamental questions about meaning, and promotes a love for learning and discovery. The University s Catholic intellectual tradition asserts that faith and reason complement each other, and questions of faith are encouraged and examined as intellectual inquiries. This approach nurtures a community committed to an examined life of intellectual, social, and spiritual discernment, as well as the understanding that leadership and service to the world are intimately connected. For more information about Loyola s mission, vision, and values, please visit: University Leadership and Institutional Direction The President of Loyola University Maryland is Rev. Brian Linnane, S.J. Fr. Linnane took office in 2005, succeeding Rev. Harold Ridley, S.J. Educated at Boston College, Georgetown University, the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, and Yale University, Fr. Linnane served for five years on the Board of Trustees at Loyola before becoming President. His prior professional position was at the College of the Holy Cross, where he was a member of the faculty and Assistant Dean of the College. Reporting to Fr. Linnane, and accountable to him for the management and strategic momentum of the University, are his senior Cabinet officers, including the Executive Vice President (who oversees the Vice Presidents for Administration, Advancement, Enrollment Management and Communications, and Student Development), the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Finance (and Treasurer). Shared governance at Loyola includes two governance bodies: the Academic Senate (charged with establishing and maintaining the academic excellence of the university, monitoring academic conduct and approving programs, policies, and resource utilizations with the objective of improving the educational effectiveness of the University) and the Loyola Conference (charged with University wide issues, such as strategic planning, resource allocation, setting administrative policy, monitoring progress of the University toward its mission and goals, and setting and approving University wide budgets, policies, and programs with the objective of improving the effectiveness of the University). The Vice President for Academic Affairs (Dr. Amy Wolfson) is the Chair of the Loyola Conference. The Loyola Conference includes elected representatives from the faculty, staff, administration, and students. Both Bodies bring recommendations to the President.

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 4 Campus and Location Loyola s main campus in the Evergreen neighborhood of Baltimore includes carefully restored historic buildings and new, state of the art facilities. Recent construction projects include the $62 million Ridley Athletic Complex and a $12.5 million renovation of the Donnelly Science Center. Eighty one percent of undergraduates live on the Evergreen campus, which is surrounded by green, wooded parkland and some of Baltimore s most desirable neighborhoods. While the fun and excitement of Baltimore s waterfront, entertainment, and cultural attractions are readily accessible, the campus is largely self contained and the undergraduate student community tends to be tightly knit and highly engaged in campus life. While graduate students 68 percent of whom are part time may take classes on the Evergreen campus, a larger portion attend the two suburban satellite campuses in Timonium, Maryland, and Columbia, Maryland. In keeping with Loyola s Jesuit mission, the University also operates Clinical Centers on the Evergreen campus and in Columbia and Belvedere Square where graduate students in speech language pathology, clinical psychology, pastoral counseling, and literacy provide interdisciplinary services to the community and gain valuable educational and training experiences. The Loyola/Notre Dame Library is a corporation formed in 1968 by Loyola and its close neighbor the Notre Dame of Maryland University (formerly known as College of Notre Dame of Maryland) for the purpose of building and operating a library that would serve the two colleges. Land was deeded to the corporation by the colleges, and a central site was selected where the property of one university joins the other. The joint library is one of the first such facilities in the country to be sponsored by two independent universities. Renovated and expanded in 2008, Loyola/Notre Dame Library features an auditorium, group study areas, seminar rooms, and a digital media and adaptive technology lab. The library offers access to over 400, 000 volumes, over 130 online research databases, over 41,500 full text journals which are available online, and over 16,000 media items. The Library expands access to its holdings by building collaborations with other libraries locally and nationally. Schools and Colleges Loyola College of Arts and Sciences Loyola College has 264 full time faculty members and approximately 2,200 undergraduate students and 850 graduate students. It offers 31 undergraduate majors, 46 undergraduate minors and graduate programs in communication, liberal studies, psychology, pastoral counseling, theology, and speech language pathology. Developed and taught by leading scholars and practitioners in their respective fields, all of the College s programs prepare undergraduate and graduate students to engage in lifelong learning, to draw from the best of current scholarship, to become highly qualified leaders in their professions, and thus to transform the people and communities they serve. A sense of higher purpose and service to the world inform the learning that takes place at Loyola College of Arts and Sciences. Graduates of these programs go on to make significant contributions to their chosen field, and more importantly, to change lives. The Sellinger School of Business Loyola s School of Business was formed in 1980, following Loyola s first offering of the MBA in 1967 and introduction of the EMBA in In 1984, the School was retitled to include the name of President Sellinger, a leader who transformed the lives of many at Loyola, after a publicly

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 5 unidentified donor made this a condition of a one million dollar gift. The School achieved AACSB accreditation in 1988 and remains the only private institution in Maryland with a nationally accredited business school. The School enrolls approximately 1000 full time undergraduate students and 1000 graduate students in part time and weekend MBA programs, a full time Emerging Leaders MBA program, Master s degrees in Finance and Accounting, and certificate programs. The Sellinger alumni community contains 35,000 members, including over 11,000 graduate business alumni. Students are taught by 66 full time and 69 part time faculty. Departments include Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems/Operations Management, Law and Social Responsibility, Management/International Business, and Marketing. The School offers programs at campuses in Baltimore, Timonium, Maryland, and Columbia, Maryland. The School of Education As outlined in its current strategic plan, Loyola launched a new School of Education in the fall of The distinctive mission of the School is to prepare teachers and other professionals for successful work, scholarship, and practice, given the unique and complex challenges of urban education. The School seeks to generate the scholarship and new practices that will leverage true urban school improvement and renewal. The School of Education has 36 full time faculty members delivering ten different programs of study. The main objectives for the School of Education are: to demonstrate a clear commitment to contributing to educational issues in the local and regional community; to create a more visible and broader presence in the marketplace; to engage donors; and to enhance the position of Education to meet the financial expectations of the University. These objectives address missionrelated needs in and around Loyola University Maryland, Baltimore City, and surrounding counties. They also capitalize on the interests of a significant number of faculty members who are committed to improving the education available to marginalized children and adolescents. Additionally, the vision sets a direction for future growth and for the establishment of a school that will be easily recognized as committed to the ideals of Jesuit education. Loyola s Strategic Plan: Grounded in Tradition, Educating for the Future Guided by Loyola s core values and in pursuit of the goal of becoming the leading Catholic comprehensive university in the nation, the University committed in 2008 to eight spotlight initiatives in its current strategic plan, Grounded in Tradition, Educating for the Future ( The initiatives are as follows: Establish Living and Learning Communities for all First year Students Launch a School of Education, Achieve National Recognition for the Loyola Clinical Centers, and Strive for Greater Renown for the Sellinger School Enhance and Enrich the Natural Sciences Augment Services that Enable Recruitment, Retention, and Development of Graduate Students Strengthen Loyola s Intellectual Positioning through Tenure Track Faculty Positions and Enhanced Faculty Development Support Partner in Developing a Plan for York Road Corridor Redevelopment Enhance the Global Studies Program

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 6 Enhance Athletic Programs by Improving Athletic Facilities and Implementing a Comprehensive Marketing Plan for Loyola Athletics These initiatives also inform the priorities of the University s $100 million comprehensive campaign, Bright Minds, Bold Hearts. The corpus of Loyola s endowment increased by more than $14 million during the silent phase of the campaign, which marked its official kick off in December The University is now beginning the work of developing its next strategic plan. The Sellinger School Role of the Dean of Loyola s Sellinger School of Business The Dean of the Sellinger School reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Amy R. Wolfson joined Loyola as VPAA in July 2014 from her position as associate dean of the faculty and professor of psychology at the College of the Holy Cross. To learn more about Dr. Wolfson s background, please visit amy wolfson named vp. The Dean s primary charge is to provide vision and leadership for the Sellinger School and to serve as the voice of the School s faculty, students, and staff in University matters. Direct reports to the Dean include two Associate Deans, the faculty chairs of Sellinger s seven academic departments, and administrative staff. It is also the Dean s responsibility to work collaboratively with the Deans of Loyola College and the School of Education as well as with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, her Associate Vice Presidents and other members of her staff. Sellinger s overall budget for FY 2015 is approximately $14 million. Opportunities and Challenges In demonstrating an ability to develop data driven strategies and execute against those strategies with an effective management process, the next Dean of the Sellinger School will address the following opportunities and challenges: Leading the development of a strategic plan for the Sellinger School: Sellinger s strategic plan should be consonant with the School and University s Jesuit and Catholic mission and harmonize with the overall University strategic plan. In addition, the strategic planning process for Sellinger should be inclusive, transparent, and informed by the national conversation surrounding the future of business and liberal arts education, which includes recognition of the financial challenges facing all of higher education. The planning process should include a strategic assessment of the competitive business education marketplace, both regionally and nationally, resulting in courageous, bold, evidence based initiatives and changes that respond to market needs around business and executive education content and delivery and address the particular strengths and value proposition that Sellinger will bring to the marketplace. Recruiting, retaining, mentoring, supporting, leading, and inspiring the School s diverse faculty: The Dean will be responsible for ensuring that the Sellinger faculty is a recognized strength of the institution, He or she will lead, support, and develop faculty by ensuring the path to tenure is clearly delineated and well supported; helping the senior members of the faculty to continue growing, developing, and engaging in meaningful ways; soliciting faculty input in discussions around Sellinger s vision and strategy; harnessing the energy and enthusiasm of a strong cohort of junior faculty and

Loyola University Maryland, Dean of the Sellinger School Page 7 encouraging their continued growth; promoting faculty cohesion; and uniting faculty around a shared vision. In addition, as many of Sellinger s programs are taught by parttime faculty, the Dean will need to be thoughtful about managing their needs as well. Continuing to advance Sellinger s profile in both research and teaching and determining the appropriate balance between research and teaching: The Dean will work with faculty to support gains in research quality, while simultaneously exploring the potential for further pedagogical innovations within the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, the Dean will encourage Sellinger faculty to consider linkages between research and real world applications and to provide students with opportunities to link research and practice. Faculty use of technology will be encouraged and supported in these efforts. Expanding partnerships and attracting additional resources to advance Sellinger s mission: The Dean will look to enhance existing partnerships and initiate new partnerships both internally and externally that lead to strategic opportunities in areas such as executive education and customized programs for working professionals, as well as for liberal arts students seeking business oriented coursework. The Dean will engage regional employers and the surrounding business community in determining how Sellinger can most effectively meet their training and workforce development needs. The Dean will continue to support and enhance Sellinger s Board of Sponsors, which is comprised of friends and alumni, as well as expand relationships with corporations, foundations, and other sources of external funding. In addition, in collaboration with the Office of Advancement, the Dean will coordinate efforts with the larger philanthropic goals of the University and its Board. Collaborating with the faculty and the VPAA s office in a review of the curriculum, with a particular emphasis on strategy around graduate program renewal, expansion, and enrollments: The process of reviewing and revitalizing the undergraduate and graduate curriculum should be inclusive and transparent and tied to the larger strategic planning initiatives of both Sellinger and the University. The Dean will be responsible for helping to establish the priorities that will guide the discussion and ensure that the process unfolds in collaboration with the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will engage the community in expanding graduate programs and enrollments, ensuring a cohesive bond between all academic programs, enhancing Sellinger s engagement in global and international endeavors, creating Sellinger s appropriate online presence, and determining the right mix of technology to enrich the student experience and to remain competitive in the marketplace.
