4 LEARNER STORIES ARTHUR A. BRAZIL 18-year-old student from Brazil; MITx 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics as part of a blended class. One of the best things about 6.002x was the community built by the students themselves. The atmosphere was great: people shared their enthusiasm and knowledge, and lent a hand to those like me who didn t have the basics for the course. All of this was done in a very friendly environment. This was something that really helped me keep moving forward in 6.002x. MARY L. USA 25-year-old student from Weston, MA; HarvardX PH207x: Health in Numbers: Quantitative Methods in Clinical and Public Health Research I had a great idea: why not use the new knowledge I gained from taking this rigorous course to further my teaching career? So I petitioned the school district where I teach to approve PH207x for graduate credit. I ed edx President Anant Agarwal for help with explaining the course to my district. Even though I was one of tens of thousands of online students in PH207x, guess what? I got a personal response from edx. EdX confirmed that the course was indeed taught at the graduate level, that it is offered for credit typically and is graded. With this clarification, my district approved the course to be accepted for graduate credit. ASHWITH R. BANGALORE 24-year-old student from Bangalore, India; MITx 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics as part of a blended class The course on edx is helping in my preparation for my Masters. More than my career, what I like is that I m learning a lot. We are given real world problems to solve and that has changed the way I thought about some subjects. EdX gives anyone in the world access to the best teachers out there. It is also free. These two factors mean a lot in places where access to good education is not easy. I have studied these topics for my Master s but in the edx course there are a lot of details. A lot of videos, exercises and homework. STUDENT, MILAN It s amazing to see the amount of talent out there - like high school students studying engineering subjects and people above 70 years of age still having the energy to never stop learning. STUDENT, BANGALORE The professors are awesome and many of us around the world have never been taught by someone who loves their area of teaching so much. STUDENT, NEW DELHI 4
5 FAQ WHAT IS EDX? EdX is a not-for-profit learning enterprise founded by Harvard and MIT that offers free online courses from the world s best professors and universities to anyone in the world with Internet access. Our vision is to increase access to quality education, improve learning results and create a culture of lifetime learners by leveraging Internet-optimized learning technologies and online and blended learning models. We believe we can provide truly world-class online courses to everyone, everywhere, regardless of social status or income, while also improving on-campus education. EdX is the only major MOOC that is nonprofit and open source two characteristics that are reflective of our larger mission. We believe that an education consortium needs to be nonprofit, to ensure we are putting principle before profit. We also believe that the collaborative philosophy of MOOCs naturally lends itself to open source, enabling us to bring the larger education community into the development of what is and will remain the world s leading educational platform. Our goal is to educate 1 billion students worldwide in the next 10 years. WHY AND WHEN WAS IT FOUNDED? Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created edx in May 2012 with three goals in mind: 1) to open up access to quality education globally 2) improve on campus education and 3) conduct research to understand more precisely how students learn. WHAT IS A MOOC? A MOOC is a massive open online course. It is massive in that it is not limited by the four walls of a school building. Literally hundreds of thousands of people can take a MOOC at one time. It is open in that anyone, regardless of social status, income or academic affiliation may sign up and participate in the courses. It is an online course but as you will see with edx, online is only the beginning. WHO TAKES EDX COURSES? Anyone with a desire to learn and a way to connect to the Internet. From Battushig, a 15-year-old high school student from Mongolia who aced the MITx Circuits & Engineering class to young professionals in the U.S. and United Kingdom who are taking classes to reach new career goals, our student population is diverse in every sense of the word. EdX learners range in age from 14 to 76, with students from 192 countries around the world, and our registrations increase every day. For example, through a National Science Foundation grant, edx is collaborating with MIT s Teaching 5 Learning Laboratory (TLL, see tll.mit.edu), Harvard University, and an education group of MIT David Pritchard, at Research in Learning, Assessing and Tutoring Effectively (RELATE, see
6 FAQ WHAT IS THE COMPLETION RATE? EdX flips the funnel by allowing admission to everyone. In the traditional university admissions process, many apply but fewer are admitted; edx opens up access to everyone, but not everyone completes or achieves a certificate of mastery. We attract learners with many different goals from students with a traditional focus on demonstrating mastery of the course and receiving a certificate of mastery from edx and the X University, to people who are attending solely to interact with other students and expand their understanding of the world around them. For those who want to audit a class, a certificate or even completion may not be desired. Because of the variety and diversity of edx learners, the number of learners who complete a course varies. WHO TEACHES EDX COURSES? EdX draws the world s best and most knowledgeable faculty to lead its courses from Eric Lander who helped lead the Human Genome Project and now teaches the MITx Introduction to Biology class, to Harvard Professor Michael Sandel, the political philosophy guru who teaches HarvardX s Justice course. Our professors are valued partners in our commitment to improving online and on-campus education, and they are center stage during this exciting time in education. HOW DOES EDX WORK WITH UNIVERSITIES? EdX, the only leading MOOC provider that is a not-for-profit, was founded by, and continues to be governed by, colleges and universities. We are creating a selected network of the world s top schools the X Consortium to offer the world s best educational experience to anyone who wants it. The X Consortium currently consists of 29 higher education institutions worldwide, with more to be announced soon. In addition to developing and delivering courses on the edx platform, we work with the X Consortium to improve education both online and on-campus and to conduct research on how students learn. Universities interested in joining our growing xconsortium can university@edx.org to find out more about the process. HOW IS EDX IMPROVING ON CAMPUS EDUCATION? MOOCs won t replace universities, but rather enhance the quality of education by incorporating blended learning. In blended classrooms, the on-campus university course can leverage the power of MOOCs to free up classroom time for interactive collaboration and discussion, testing, and problem solving. For example, San Jose State University piloted this blended learning method, and initial results were dramatic. The percentage of students required to retake the course dropped from 41 percent under the traditional format to 9 percent for those taking the edx blended course. EdX also partners with universities to use its platform to conduct research into how students learn in order to improve traditional and online education. 7 6
7 FAQ FAQ For example, through a National Science Foundation grant, edx is collaborating with MIT s Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL, see tll.mit.edu), Harvard University, and an education group of MIT Professor David Pritchard, at Research in Learning, Assessing and Tutoring Effectively (RELATE, see relate.mit.edu). WHAT IS EDX S REVENUE MODEL? We are nonprofit, not non-revenue and put principle before profit, but we also understand the importance of being self-sustaining. Edx is considering or experimenting with a number of different revenue models and pilot programs to determine which are best suited for edx. These include: fees for certificates of mastery and/or exam proctoring; licensing edx course content to other institutions, executive education, course hosting and offer support services to other organizations using the platform. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF EDX? Up to now, quality education and in some cases, any higher education at all has been the privilege of the few. We see MOOCs as the great democratizer, and believe that in the future, economics, social status, gender or geography won t be a determinate of a student s access to education or opportunity for success. We also envision a continuous education system one that doesn t stop after four years of college. Our vision for the future is to continue to work with universities, faculty, learning scientists and students to innovate and transform education, making it accessible on a global level to everyone regardless of social status or income, and revolutionizing on-campus learning, while improving quality. 7
