A WARM WELCOME TO NYENRODE NEW BUSINESS SCHOOL Do you have a burning ambition to succeed and the talent to match? If so, Nyenrode New Business School is the place for you. We offer high quality academic education on a scale large enough to provide plenty of room for creativity and selfdevelopment, and yet small enough to offer personal attention from a highly qualified staff. Our full-time curriculum challenges students to tackle a unique combination of academic and professional situations within an international context of creativity, innovation and responsible business. From day one, all our students are considered as beginning entrepreneurs and business people. Building on experience, critical thinking, developing practical capabilities and new ideas will be the key drivers throughout the degree programme. New Business School is affiliated with the University of Westminster in London. Through this partnership, and as part of its commitment to Education Without Borders, studies are completed partly in Amsterdam, partly in Breukelen, partly in London and are taught entirely in English. Students can be part of a degree programme with a truly international dimension that culminates in the awarding of both a BBA New Business degree and a BA (Hons) Business Management degree, accredited in the Netherlands (NVAO) and United Kingdom (QAA) respectively. This offers the opportunity for graduates to proceed to Masters programmes in the Netherlands (e.g. Nyenrode Business Universiteit), United Kingdom, or other countries.it ensures students not only make optimal use of their time but also offers excellent value for money. The New in New Business School stands for our philosophy, method and values. Our objective is to educate resourceful and responsible business people via knowledge-based creative learning. Entrepreneurship, creativity and responsible business are our core values. Enrolling at the Nyenrode New Business School will kick start your career as an entrepreneur, intrapreneur or professional manager. We expect a great deal from you in return: commitment to the Nyenrode values of leadership, entrepreneurship and stewardship, maximum effort, dedication and the discipline to meet the many intellectual and entrepreneurial challenges you will face throughout your career. If you think you have what it takes to be a new generation business person let s talk Prof. dr. Désirée van Gorp LL.M., Dean a.i. Nyenrode New Business School 3

OUR PHILOSOPHY Nyenrode New Business School seeks to educate students in a broad range of academic disciplines and to promote responsible entrepreneurship, creativity, and momentous new ideas. Following a strategy based on academic experience, compulsory modules (classes) are designed to stimulate the student s capacity to think independently and conduct critical analysis, explore the theories and concepts of the core areas of finance, human resource management, marketing, and communications. Simultaneously, students perform as beginning entrepreneurs, building up knowledge and practical experience in real life business projects and student companies that they set up and run. Instruction in basic academic research, supported by a culture of comparing and connecting different theories, gives students the intellectual basis necessary to operate at the level of academic analysis required to solve complex, multifaceted business problems. Knowledge-based, responsible entrepreneurship coupled with innovative interdisciplinary business models and the latest communication technology drive the development of our programme. As Dr Noreena Hertz, Associate Director of the Centre for International Business and Management at the University of Cambridge stated: This is the world of the Silent Takeover, a world in which governments can no longer be relied on to protect the people s interests. Blinded by the allure of the market, they now put corporate interests first. Dr Hertz goes on to say: Delivering a quality product at a reasonable cost is not all that is demanded of corporations today. The key to consumer satisfaction is not only how well a company treats its customers, but increasingly whether it is perceived as taking its responsibilities to society seriously. People are demanding that corporations deliver in a way that governments can t or won t. Dr Hertz s message is clear: it is no longer enough to simply employ people, make a profit and pay taxes. To achieve a just and sustainable society, businesses in the 21st century need to act responsibly, be accountable, and benefit society as a whole. If we are to take care of the triple interests of People, Planet and Profit, the classic business model has to be redefined. Responsible entrepreneurship requires imagination and strong civic virtue. At Nyenrode New Business School we stimulate creativity in our students by encouraging them to combine understanding and methods from cross-disciplinary academic research to develop and manage challenging real life projects provided by partner businesses. Similarly, civic virtue is nurtured through activity in social projects and exposure to world trends in corporate governance, environmental limitations, sustainable growth and cultural differences. It is our conviction that educating students to be creative, entrepreneurial and responsible business people contributes to a more socially and environmentally sound business climate. 4

COURSE STRUCTURE Overview Nyenrode New Business School has a full-time four year programme where finishing graduates attain a BBA New Business degree and BA (Hons) Business Management degree, accredited in the Netherlands (NAVO) and United Kingdom (QAA) respectively. This offers the opportunity for graduates to proceed to Masters programmes in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, or other countries. With exemption from Foundation Year 1 evaluated on an individual basis (see admission requirements and procedures), holders of a VWO / IB diploma have the potential to follow a full-time three year programme. Successful completion of the entire degree programme requires a 40 hours-per-week attitude and motivation: the number of contact hours, including lectures, seminars and consultancy is approximately 20 per week while the number of hours spent on group and individual work will be roughly 20 to 25. The degree programme is multi-disciplinary, consisting of modules organized under the headings of: Academic Theory, Attitude & Skills and Applied Theory (Project Work). Within this are a fixed set of required core modules which cover the main areas of business organizations e.g. Management & Human Resources; Accounting & Finance; Operations Management. Specialism A number of elective modules from five business functional areas (specialisms) are offered alongside the core modules following the successful completion or exemption from Foundation Year 1: Creative Business & Entertainment Management Business & Entrepreneurial Marketing Business & New Entrepreneurship Business & Financial Management This allows students the choice of following either a general or specialism programme. Those opting for the general programme are free to choose from all the elective modules offered. For those deciding to follow one of the five specialism programmes, the required core modules are extended to include a compulsory set of elective modules according to the chosen specialism. Foundation Year The first year, or Foundation Year 1 is tailored toward holders of a HAVO (or international equivalent) with a fit/gap approach to their individual backgrounds, and may therefore vary in workload from candidate to candidate. It consists of a package of core modules designed to progress students academically, provide them with a firm basis in fundamental business concepts and develop their project management skills. 5

Years 2 to 4 In the second year, core modules regarding marketing, finance, human resources management, communications and law provide broad business knowledge and the academic background necessary for conceptual thinking, writing and business analysis skills. Two second year projects allow students to immediately apply the academic theories they have learned, and to practice solving basic business problems independently and within their study group. These include Project Management, where students will be building schools in India in partnership with Round Table India ( and visiting Welingkar Institute of Management (Mumbai, India), and Product Development, where students will be working in small groups on research tasks requested by companies e.g. Hi KPN, Randstad, Strukton. In the third year, students learn to develop their research, evaluation, analytical and synthetic skills further and begin to consider career directions. In the third year project Business Planning, Budgeting and Finance (Student Run Company / Entrepreneur), and in collaboration with Beijing Union University (Beijing, China), students are able to gain experience as a manager first hand. During the fourth year, the wide selection of elective modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialisation. The final project depends on the location of the company which offers you the final project assignment, and may take place anywhere in the world. 6

FOUR GOOD REASONS TO CONSIDER OUR BUSINESS DEGREE 1. The personal touch Not only the staff and coaches get to know their students personally, also all the students know each other well. For a major part of their studies, learners will be assigned to small groups, comprising five to eight members, which act as business units. Although each member is an independent player, they are also responsible for the group and are required to study and work closely together. Leadership, responsibility, creativity and entrepreneurship are some of the qualities emphasized and practiced in these studies. Professional coaches will give space to all groups to find their own solutions, while carefully monitoring the individual academic results, productivity and level of participation in discussions. 2. Combining the university academic with the practical professional Nyenrode New Business School offers an ideal combination for students who are interested in both theoretical approach as well as the professional side of the business arena. Our close association with leading companies enables us to offer a cutting-edge curriculum where students can be assured that they will always be up to date in international business. Moreover, the companies with which we work are often interested in entrepreneurial students for their own innovation-oriented future. 7

3. An international focus Study locations in Amsterdam (Nyenrode New Business School) and London (University of Westminster), along with the option to carry out the final dissertation project anywhere in the world, testify to the international nature of our programme. Our partner companies are multinational in both character and operations, and we place a strong accent on the European dimension of informed citizenship and personal values and ethics. Students are involved with international projects in all years of their programme, e.g. Ethiopia and India in years 1 and 2, and all graduates receive the internationally recognized BBA degree as well as the BA (Hons) degree. 4. Education as an experience From the first year, our students develop a toolkit (Showcase Projects) which provides them with the theory, skills and attitude required to run a successful project. In the second year, they develop a spirit of creativity and understanding of what it is like to be an entrepreneur in new venture projects (Product Development), while in other projects they learn to develop a sense of civic responsibility (Project Management). In the third year, as owners of their own companies or in student-run companies (Business Planning, Budgeting & Finance), they learn to sense the right balance between capital investment, expenses, market share considerations and profit. Fourth-year students find themselves in the centre of the international academic and business world in London, working on their final project (thesis / dissertation) which can take them anywhere in the world. Throughout this period, students learn to fight their corner while ensuring they remain good colleagues and responsible business people. 8

FOUNDATION YEAR (HONS) BUSINESS & SPECIALISM The Foundation Year 1, aimed at preparing holders of a HAVO (or international equivalent) for the subsequent years of study, can be compared to a foundation level programme offered at most international universities. For those candidates who wish to further develop their English proficiency, Nyenrode New Business School offers a summer school opportunity at our partner University of Westminster in London for the duration of 6 weeks. The set of core modules are designed to introduce students to the fundamental business concepts in the areas of marketing, finance, human resources management, communications and law. Application of theoretical knowledge to real-life situations begins already in this first year where students will be running two Showcase projects, of which one involves branding an Ethiopian coffee in collaboration with fellow students from St. Mary s University College (Addis Ababa). BA IN BUSINESS GENERAL DEGREE The general degree course is suitable for students who have not yet chosen the focus of their future business career and wish to keep their options open. It allows them to emphasise specific aspects of their personal module portfolio when applying for a general management position. In the second and third year, students can choose their elective modules from any of the five offered specialism programmes available within Nyenrode New Business School. In the fourth year, students can select from the wide choice of specialist modules offered by the University of Westminster including: foreign language study; training in effective research techniques; broaden into a new subject such as Media or specialise in a completely different area. CREATIVE BUSINESS & ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT The emerging combined Creative Industries is a fast-growing segment in the global economy that increasingly is being recognized as a major determinant of national and regional economic growth. Within this segment, digital platforms have created instant global markets for creative industry players, while globalisation and digital convergence are transforming the face of the industry. But building a competitive creative (services) business is a complex process including content design and protection, new distribution and business models, and product diversification that cannot be achieved by talent alone. In the second year, students are introduced to the concepts and techniques of the creative industries and explore critical core theory concerning marketing, finance, human resource management and communications as they relate to the creative business environment. In the third year, copyright and contract law and an academic approach to creativity form the major part of the programme. Creative industry practices are contextualised within more general business routines, and integrated with functions and operations required in the business world. As mentioned under Course Structure, during the fourth year the wide selection of modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialization. 9

The types of careers available to graduates of this programme include: (Cross and Interactive) Media Executive, (Executive) Producer for Television, Event Manager, Cross Media Marketing Manager, Artist Manager, Live Entertainment Producer, Digital Sector Marketing Executive, and Product or Promotion Manager in the music industry. BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURIAL MARKETING In a fast changing and increasingly competitive business environment, marketing is possibly the single most critical factor for the continued success of an organisation. Marketing, entrepreneurship and the development of new business operations share many areas of commonality, such as analytical skills, innovation and creativity, calculated risk taking and a proactive attitude. Nyenrode New Business School stimulates these capabilities and values through training in creative market sensing, guidance in designing and implementing cost accounting systems, and practice in planning and implementing marketing programmes. Sales and marketing fine-tuning is one of the major issues considered. In the second year, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of marketing and entrepreneurial management and explore critical core theory concerning, finance, human resource management, communications and law. In the third year, marketing skills and practices are contextualised within a holistic study of wider business practices and the general functions and operations prevalent in the business world. As mentioned under Course Structure, during the fourth year the wide selection of modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialization. The types of careers available to graduates of this programme include: Brand Manager, Market Research Executive or Analyst, Advertising and Promotions Manager, Marketing Manager and Customer Relations Executive. BUSINESS & NEW ENTREPRENEURSHIP Being an entrepreneur today means developing new business operations with calculated risk and a proactive attitude. At Nyenrode New Business School, students develop entrepreneurial attitude and skills through hands on training in creative market sensing, creating a profit margin, the creation of activity plans, and reporting on newly discovered business models, new products and new content. The influence of technological innovation on business practice is also a key subject of study. In other words, students study today s dynamic new business sectors in order to become tomorrow s entrepreneur. In the second year, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of new entrepreneurship. They will explore critical core theory concerning marketing, finance, human resources management, communications and law, providing them with the academic background necessary for business 10

analysis. In the third year, marketing skills and practices are contextualised within a holistic study of wider business practice and the integrative functions and operations prevalent within the business world. Students will further develop their enquiry, evaluation, analysis and synthesis skills and start to consider future career directions. As mentioned under Course Structure, during the fourth year the wide selection of modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialization. The types of careers available to graduates of this programme include: Brand Managers, Media Executives, Marketing Managers, Client and Customer Relations Executives, New Product and New Market Development Managers and Digital Sector Marketing Executives. BUSINESS & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT The specialized subject area Business Financial Management provides students with the inspiration, expertise and skills to become key players within an organisation. Opportunities in the financial sector worldwide abound, both in banks, investment brokerage firms, and insurance companies as well as in industrial and commercial companies. Today s financial management specialists hold the key to success for the organizations that employ them, with company boards relying on their specialist knowledge to formulate business strategies and provide advice and guidance on risk management and compliance. In the second year, students are provided with an introduction to financial and managerial accounting and the ways in which finance is managed within a business organization. For example, they will learn to evaluate the different sources of finance, compare the ways in which they are used, and learn to analyse and evaluate financial performance. In the third year, students learn the financial management skills that will enable them to understand company capital structures and how to estimate the weighted average cost of capital. As mentioned under Course Structure, during the fourth year the wide selection of modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialization. Our Business & Financial Management specialization is designed to provide a solid foundation of financial knowledge as well as a firm grounding in the broader-based business skills needed for financial management positions such as marketing, economics and human resource management, among many others. 11

STUDENT-RUN COMPANY Stimulate socially responsible entrepreneurship is one of Nyenrode New Business School s main focuses. Our strong belief that making business and making the world better are key factors to achieving a stable success is really starting to generate some great results: When I started at Nyenrode New Business School I already knew that I wanted to start my own company. Lots of ideas and projects came up and I could not focus on one specific trade. There was only one point I was sure of: I wanted to start mainly in developing countries. During classes and coaching sessions the ideas matured and I realized my real expectations. Now I m launching my own clothing company in Zimbabwe. The concept of it is to make use of local knowledge of clothes manufacturing and local labor force to produce clothes at affordable prices for their own communities. With this project, I feel myself contributing for a better world and I m sure that a great future lays ahead us. Mary Chekera is a 3 rd year student at Nyenrode New Business School and together with her partner Tabeth Coorevits is preparing the launching of their company Glimlacht Mode. Entrepreneurship, very much like the seeds of a pretty flower, requires fertile soil to grow. Nyenrode New Business School has allowed StudyFlow to germinate, sprout and eventually, flourish. Were it not for the freedom we were given at this school, our wild ideas might have very well been nipped in the bud. I have a rosy outlook for anyone attending, and at the very least expect some new student run companies to blossom in the years to come. Edo van Rojen, Tom van Vooren and Philippe Taminiau are 3 rd year students at Nyenrode New Business School and together they started their company StudyFlow. Nyenrode New Business School provided me an inspiring study and working environment. During my study time I developed a new perspective on entrepreneurship a look where creativity and sustainability are the key pillars. Nowadays I still see it present in my company, which I started during my study time and it is currently active in 13 cities nationwide. Back then (and even now) I benefitted from the experience and viewpoints of my lecturers, many of which have themselves the entrepreneurial spirit, and also the entrepreneurial mentality that all my classmates have. Georgi Tuaev is a 4 th year student and,, during his studies at Nyenrode New Business School, started his company GratisPrint together with his partners Ilja Groenewegen, Bram van Leur and Thomas van der Kleij. 12
