Faculty Expectations of Students: Mode of Instruction: Students will learn in a community-based agency or school where they will meet with actual clients who have counseling concerns. Students will be supervised by an on-site qualified counselor and a faculty supervisor. The student is to document at least 100 clock hours of supervised experience. This course is primarily experiential with in-person or on-line group and individual supervisory meetings to discuss ongoing issues. Students are expected to be proficient at the use of Digital Samba as the online meetings are an essential part of the internship experience. Students should also be proficient in submitting video recordings electronically. Asynchronous/Synchronous Learning: This course will require primarily asynchronous learning, which means that students can work independently at their own pace within certain schedule constraints/limitations. In addition, group and individual supervision sessions will be scheduled through Digital Samba during this course, students must participate in eight Group Supervision sessions via Digital Samba. Dates and times are posted in the syllabus. Students must also participate in three Individual Supervision sessions with professor, via either phone or Digital Samba. 4 Submission of Video Sessions Students must use a digital video camera to record client sessions. If you do not yet have a digital video camera, we would like for you to purchase or borrow either a Flip Video Camcorder ( OR a Sony Bloggie ( You may not use a web cam or digital point and shoot still frame camera even if they take video. These cameras are not meant to record video. Flip cameras can be purchased beginning at about $100, and the Sony Bloggie starting around $150. They are very user friendly make sure you buy one that can record at least 60 minutes. Information on the Flipcam and Bloggie, as well as information about uploading videos to a Sakai course may be found in Sakai under Help for Student within the Procedures for Video Submission in Online Courses at Messiah College section. Information Technology Services (ITS) will provide tech support for both the Flip or Bloggie cameras. You should not expect them to assist you if you use a different type of camera. Technical difficulties with other cameras will not be an excuse for submitting an assignment late. A signed consent form from the student/client or student s/client s guardian (if under the age of 18) must be obtained before taping begins. Students creating video recordings of counseling sessions and other course material that contains client/student information must maintain the confidentiality of these materials by doing the following: 1. Students often have strong emotional reactions to the content of counseling courses or skilldevelopment experiences. Students may also become aware of something about themselves that impacts their present or future work with clients. It is important to acknowledge these reactions and in some cases utilize the help of a professional counselor to process them. Students should refer to the program website and student handbook for recommendations about how to find a professional counselor. They are also encouraged to consult with their instructor or advisor in deciding how and when to seek outside support. Library and Librarian Assistance The Library is an obvious source of information for research, presentations and projects. Currently, Elizabeth (Liz) Kielley is the specific library liaison assigned to the social sciences disciplines. Although any librarian is trained and prepared to assist you, Liz works specifically with the social sciences and is most familiar with the resources and databases that relate to this field. Do not hesitate to contact her if you are having trouble locating specific sources for your assignments, as she is more than willing to help you. For her specific work schedule, contact her directly at EKielley@messiah.edu or by calling ext. (717) , ext Page 6 of 12
