M.A. Counseling Practicum COUN 523 M.A. Counseling/CMHC Internship COUN 593A COUN 594A COUN 595A COUN 593B COUN 594B COUN 595B Doctoral Practicum CES 770 CES 771 CES 772 Doctoral Internship CES 801 CES 802 CES 803 The purpose of this agreement is to provide a qualified student enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Counselor Education and Supervision (DPCES), Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling, and Master of Arts (M.A.) in School Counseling Programs, with appropriate field based supervised clinical experiences in counseling. PRACTICUM Practicum (COUN 523) is often the first counseling experience for students in the masters in counseling programs. As such, students are expected to generally observe and co-facilitate in counseling situations using their basic attending skills and questioning techniques. M.A. practicum takes place in a clinical or K 12 school setting. For DPCES students, practicum exists as a specialized elective (CES ) based on the student s specific need towards professional growth. DPCES students are expected to discuss their specific needs with their faculty advisor and pursue the appropriate practicum experience that will develop their skills in specific aspects of counseling. Students must complete a minimum of 100 clock hours during the course of the Practicum semester. The following describes the Regent University Practicum programs in detail: Page 1 of 7

2 M.A. Counseling Community Practicum 1. Direct service: a minimum of 40 hours of direct service to clients which may include any combination of face-to-face contact, individual, and group counseling. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 100 hours will be indirect hours, which may include professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. hour per week of individual and/or triadic (no more than two students at a time) supervision. 4. Student submission of five audio/video recorded sessions, or two live observation evaluations of M.A. Counseling School Practicum 1. Direct service: a minimum of 40 hours with pre-k through 12 th grade students, including faceto-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 100 hours will be indirect hours, which may include school meetings, professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. hour per week of individual and/or triadic (no more than two students at a time) supervision. 4. Student submission of five audio/video recorded sessions, or two live observation evaluations of DPCES Practicum 1. Direct service: o Individual Therapy: Three clients per week, 10 week minimum, 30 contact hours o Group Therapy: Three to six clients per group, 10 week minimum, 10 contact hours o Family Therapy: Two families per week, 10 week minimum, 20 contact hours 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 100 hours will be indirect hours, which may include professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. hour per week of individual and/or triadic (no more than two students at a time) supervision. 4. Student submission of one audio/video recorded session, or live observation evaluation of direct counseling experiences (if site/clients will not consent to recording). INTERNSHIP Counseling internship is a planned, field-based clinical experience following practicum where a student works with clients under supervision in order to further develop or refine their therapeutic skills in realworld settings. The internship includes most of the activities of a regularly employed professional in the setting. Internship is a 600 hour (minimum) multi-semester experience. Masters-level counseling internships take place over two semesters (community and school internship) and three semesters (two community and one elective school internship). DPCES internships cover three semesters total. The following describes the Regent University Internship Programs in detail: Page 2 of 7

3 M.A. Counseling Community or MCF Internship 1. Direct service: a minimum of 120 hours of the 300 hours to include face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, and/or consulting. MCF interns should focus on couples and families. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours (i.e., approximately 180 hours) to include report writing, agency meetings, supervision, weekly faculty supervision sessions, professional development, staff meetings, and in-services. 3. Supervision: (This is part of the indirect service hours) weekly interaction with an average of one hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision, throughout the 300 hours. Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of individual supervision with their on-site supervisor throughout the 600 hours. M.A. Counseling K 12 School Internship 1. Direct service: a minimum of 120 hours of the 300 hours with grades Pre-K through 6 th or 7 th through 12 th grade including face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours (i.e., approximately 180 hours) to include school meetings, professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. 3. Supervision: (This is part of the indirect service hours) weekly interaction with an average of one hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision, throughout the 300 hours. Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of individual supervision with their on-site supervisor throughout the 600 hours. M.A. Counseling K 12 Elective School Internship The student should be aware that the requirements for an Elective School Internship are more stringent than those of a regular internship due to the high number of direct hours with children that are required (i.e., 200 hours in the elective internship vs. 120 hours in Internship A or B). The student must complete a minimum of 300 clock hours at a middle school site during one semester. 1. Direct service: a minimum of 100 hours with 6 th grade children and a minimum of 100 hours with 7 th and 8 th grade children, including face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours (i.e., approximately 100 hours) to include school meetings, professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision, throughout the 300 hours. Students are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of individual supervision with their on-site supervisor throughout the 300 hours. Page 3 of 7

4 DPCES Internship Students will be expected to complete at a minimum of 200 clock hours during each of the three respective semesters of internship in the DPCES program. The 200 hours include supervised experiences in clinical settings, teaching, and supervision. The student and internship professor will create an individualized internship to meet the student s learning needs to include components of clinical counseling, teaching, and supervision. 1. Direct service: a minimum of 50 hours of the 200 hours o Counseling Services: face-to-face contact with a client(s) that involves counseling, reviewing treatment plans, medication education, family counseling, administering a test or assessment, etc. o Postsecondary Counseling or Related Educational Program Teaching: Facilitating the teaching of a class, large group, or small group, 1:1 mentoring and tutoring, dialoguing with students in Blackboard on course-related topics, etc. o Supervising Counselor-in-Training or a Post-Master s Graduate Seeking State Licensure: face-to-face supervision feedback sessions with the counselor trainee, reviewing a supervisee s videotape, evaluation of and recommendation about potential crisis presentation of supervisee s client(s), etc. o Counseling-Related Consultation Services: face-to-face discussions, meetings, and work sessions with the person/agency acquiring the consultation services, presentation of work product, findings and/or recommendations to stakeholders and/or boards of directors, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remaining 150 hours of the 200 hours to include report writing, agency meetings, writing a syllabus, reading texts and articles to assist with supervision of supervisee, preparing documents and/or report summaries for stakeholders, etc. hour per week of individual face-to-face supervision, throughout the 200 hours. Students are encouraged to complete a minimum of 20 hours of individual supervision with their on-site supervisor throughout the 600 hours. The University Program Agrees: 1. To assign a University Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor to facilitate communication between the University (School of Psychology and Counseling) and the student s local supervisor; 2. To provide assistance and consultation to the local supervisor; 3. The Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor should be immediately contacted should any problem or change in relation to student, local supervisor, or University occur; and 4. To ensure that the Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor is responsible for assigning a grade upon the student s completion of the practicum/internship. 5. The Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervision will provide small group supervision o M.A. Counseling Program: Three hours per week for no more than 12 students o DPCES Program: Two and a half (2 ½) hours per week for no more than seven students Page 4 of 7

5 The Local Supervisor Agrees: 1. To assign a supervisor with a minimum of : o M.A. Counseling Program: Master s degree in Counseling or a related profession with equivalent qualifications, including appropriate professional license(s) (e.g., LPC,LMFT, LCSW, LCP, etc.); and a minimum of two (2) years of post-licensure clinical experience in the program area in which the student is completing clinical instruction or a licensed school counselor with a minimum of two years of experience in that field and successful completion of graduate level coursework in counselor (or related) supervision. o DPCES Program: Earned doctorate if possible (mandatory if student s practicum/internship orientation is teaching), or a master s degree in counseling or a related profession with equivalent qualifications, including appropriate certifications and/or license(s) (e.g., LPC, LMFT, LCSW, LCP, etc.); a minimum of three (3) years of pertinent professional experience in the area in which the student is completing practicum/internship orientation, and successful completion of graduate level coursework in counselor (or related) supervision. 2. To assign a supervisor who is employed or contracted with the site in question and who has the time and interest in supervising the counseling student; 3. To provide opportunities for the student to engage in the activities that meet the objectives in the designed practicum/internship sections above; 4. To provide settings for the student to conduct individual and/or group counseling sessions with assured privacy and sufficient space for appropriate equipment; 5. To provide necessary and appropriate technology that assists with learning; 6. To provide one-to-one and/or triadic supervision, which involves some examination of student work using audio/video recordings, observation, and/or live supervision (Note: Supervision should include weekly interaction with an average of one hour per week.); and 7. To complete the Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling s evaluation forms. The Practicum/Internship Student Agrees: 1. To submit a resume and any necessary documentation to the site supervisor; 2. To adhere to the administrative policies, rules, standards, schedules, and practices of the school; 3. To be punctual and present at the scheduled times of the student s practicum/internship; and 4. To complete the necessary evaluations, including a midterm and final site evaluation for each semester of practicum/internship to be discussed with the site supervisor, a self-evaluation at the end of each semester, and a midterm and final evaluation of the site supervisor for each semester of practicum/internship. The student will participate in the practicum/internship activities (checked above) in sufficient amounts as to allow an adequate evaluation of the student s level of competence in each activity. Karen Mercer will be the temporary faculty liaison until the counseling student is assigned a (Field Placement Liaison) faculty supervisor for the semester. The faculty supervisor will facilitate communication between the practicum/intern student, the practicum/internship site supervisor, and the school regarding the student progress, any problems, and performance evaluations.
