1 Nurse-Family Partnership NewsLink NFP National Service Office Volume 18 Summer 2014 CEO COLUMN Dear Friends, So much exciting news is going on at the Nurse-Family Partnership National Service Office (NSO). I am delighted to share the findings published by JAMA Pediatrics in conjunction with our founder Dr. David Olds (as seen on page 1) that shows that NFP is the first early intervention program conducted in a high-income country to find evidence of reductions in maternal and child death. A press conference took place on July 8 at the Le Bonheur Children s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. to announce these finding. Additional articles based upon the results of this trial were also published in The Washington Post, MSN and U.S. News and World Report just to name a few. I m also delighted to welcome Roxane White, current chief of staff to Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, as the next CEO of the Nurse-Family Partnership National Service Office. (See page 2.) Roxane will join NFP in November and until that time I will remain president and CEO. IN THIS ISSUE... (continued on page 2.) The findings on a Memphis study of NFP were published by JAMA Pediatrics a leading, peer-reviewed journal of the American Medical Association showed that NFP reduces preventable death among both low-income mothers and their first-born children living in disadvantaged, urban neighborhoods. This is the first randomized, clinical trial of an early intervention program conducted in a high-income country to find evidence of reductions in maternal and child death. In Memphis, we see that Nurse-Family Partnership saves lives, said Meri Armour, MSN/MBA, president and CEO of Le Bonheur Children s Hospital which serves families NFP founder David Olds presents the breakthrough findings. Olds is pictured here with Shassidy Williams-Paige, NFP client and her family (shown left) along with Meri Armour, president and CEO of Le Bonheur Children s Hospital. (Photo courtesy of Lisa W. Buser) through NFP. These nurses change the future for families and children. Any time you can prevent a child s death, that s a huge success for their family and our community. Death among mothers and children in these age ranges in the United States general population is rare, but of enormous consequence, said Olds, professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and lead investigator on the study. The high rates of death among mothers and children not receiving nurse-home visits reflect the toxic conditions faced by too many low-income parents and children in our society. The lower mortality rate found among nurse-visited mothers and children likely reflects the nurses support of mothers basic human drives to protect their children and themselves. Beginning in 1990, this trial enrolled low-income, primarily African- American mothers living in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Memphis, Tenn., and assessed maternal and child mortality for over two decades until Children in the control group not receiving nurse-home visits had a mortality rate of 1.6% for preventable causes including sudden infant death syndrome, unintentional injuries and homicide. (continued on page 2.)

2 STAFF NEWS ROXANE WHITE, NAMED NURSE-FAMILY PARTNERSHIP S NEXT CEO In June, the NFP National Service Office announced Roxane White as the next CEO. White currently serves as chief of staff to Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and oversees the daily operations of the state of Colorado As CEO, White will be spearheading the growth of NFP to serve more first-time, low-income families across the country. As White said, I could not be more enthusiastic about joining NFP. The program has a proven impact on the lives of mothers, babies and their communities. The potential for changing lives is extraordinary. White will join the NSO in November. Until that time, Thomas R. Jenkins Jr. will continue to serve as president and CEO. AGENCY NEWS HRSA MEMBER VISITS FLORIDA NFP AGENCY The Jacksonville, Florida NFP agency had a visit from Mary Wakefield, Ph.D., RN, and head of the federal Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA). Wakefield was informed of how home visiting programs in Jacksonville work together to meet the needs of families living in Jacksonville. The meeting included members of the state and federal Healthy Start program, Health Department and Healthy Start Coalition. Wakefield expressed her support for home visiting programs and recognized the NFP Jacksonville agency for successfully engaging first-time families living in Jacksonville, Florida. KENTUCKY NFP AGENCY SELECTED AS MARCH OF DIMES COMMUNITY GRANT RECIPIENT The Kentucky NFP in Covington, Kentucky implemented by the St. Elizabeth Medical Center was selected as a recipient for the March of Dimes chapter community grant award. The Kentucky NFP agency will begin to implement monthly perinatal substance abuse intervention groups starting in July and ending in December. These interventions will consist of counseling and educational sessions for women. The goal of the monthly groups will be to reinforce behaviors that support healthy birth outcomes. We are very excited for this opportunity, said Stacie Nance, supervisor of the NFP Kentucky agency. The Kentucky NFP is the only NFP agency in the state of Kentucky and serves clients in Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties. TOP STORY (continued from page 1.) NFP s next CEO Roxane White. There were zero preventable deaths among nurse-visited children. In addition, over the same two-decade period, mothers who received nurse-home visits had significantly lower rates of death for all causes compared to mothers not receiving nurse-home visits. This is the first study of NFP to show significant findings of reductions in maternal and child mortality. The evidence of this effect will be further strengthened when replicated in future studies. We intend to continue this research to see whether Nurse-Family Partnership reduces premature mortality in future studies and at later ages as the mothers and children grow older, said Olds. LETTER FROM THE CEO (continued from page 1.) Roxane s knowledge, expertise and leadership skills will bring valuable insight to the National Service Office (NSO) as we enter our next phase of growth and development in service to women and children living in poverty. This year the NSO is co-sponsoring the 2014 Maternal Child Health conference in Indiana with the Indiana NFP agency, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana. We encourage attendance at this conference to learn more about how NFP impacts maternal-child health. (See page 3.) Thanks to all the hard work of our implementing agencies, NSO staff, champions and supporters, NFP continues to grow. We are currently serving over 29,000 women in 551 counties, the U.S. Virgin Islands and six tribal communities. We continue to be reminded of the benefits of this program as we work towards our goals of helping more first-time, lowincome mothers across the country. Additionally, we are thankful for the support of Tipping Point Community, who has awarded the NSO a grant to support expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area. (See page 4.) We are all passionate about the work we do and we know exciting news will continue to happen throughout the year. I look forward to the future of our organization as our founder Dr. David Olds reminds us, Nurse-Family Partnership is a work in progress. We are moving in the right directions and I am excited about our future. Thomas R. Jenkins Jr. President and CEO 2

3 CLIENT SUCCESS SAM S STORY After several failed attempts to reach out to Sam by phone, Karen Mitteness nurse home visitor for the Supporting Hands Nurse-Family Partnership program in rural Minn. thought she may never connect with Sam. Karen was adamant to make this connection, but it was not working out. It wasn t until Sam was at her local WIC office in Benson, Minn. and her nurse there told her to speak with Karen, that a connection was finally made. Karen recalls Sam walked in her office and kindly said, Hi, I m the girl who never returns your phone calls. The relationship grew from there. Twenty-four-year-old Sam had a lot on her mind and wasn t sure if enrolling in the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program was something she could manage. She had recently called off an engagement and knew she could use help since this was her first baby. I really had no idea what Nurse-Family Partnership would offer. After meeting Karen that first day, she explained the program is there to prepare me to have my baby and we would discuss topics I wanted to learn about. I thought, I am about to have a baby on my own, I need the help! said Sam. In the beginning, Sam was not comfortable opening up to Karen, but after several visits that all changed. I am a private person and it was hard sharing with Karen, said Sam. I now get excited to share things Izobel Sam and her daughter Izobel. (Sam s daughter) does and I want to share everything all the time! The relationship Karen and Sam built has helped Sam learn to take on life s moments, one thing at a time. Learning I was pregnant was scary at first. I knew it wasn t going to be easy, said Sam. I thought, Oh boy what did I get myself into. I have to bathe her on my own and get up in the middle of the night. Sam realized she was beginning a journey that would be both rewarding and difficult, but with Karen s help she learned to take on each moment as it happened. Karen has helped me be more relaxed about things, said Sam. Karen says, Do what you can and that is all that matters. The support Sam received from Karen helped Sam in the most difficult times. When Sam was 20-weeks pregnant an ultrasound showed her daughter had a swollen kidney. The doctors continued to monitor Izobel s kidney, but there was no improvement, said Sam. Sam s daughter would need kidney surgery. Karen and Sam discussed what to expect with Izobel s surgery. Karen and I went over the surgeon s plans and orders. I think Karen knew better than I did that the surgery was going to be rough on me. She was right, said Sam. To read Sam s full story, to go > First-Time Moms > Stories from moms. 6 PHILANTHROPY One of the easiest, most convenient ways to support Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is with an outright gift. The financial impact can be immediate and tax benefits are significant. When you make an outright contribution to NFP your generosity enables us to work towards our mission of empowering first-time moms and you also receive a charitable deduction on your income taxes. Two Assets You Can Give Now: Definition Tax Deduction Advantage Timing Your Gift Cash The most popular type of charitable gifts are usually given by personal check or secure credit card donations via the NFP website. You ll receive a federal income tax deduction for the amount of the gift up to 50% of your adjusted gross income in the year of the gift with a five-year carryover for any excess. In the 28% tax bracket, the cost of a $1000 cash gift would be only $720 because your taxes would be reduced by $280. A gift of cash is considered made on the date it is delivered or mailed. A credit card contribution is deductible on the date of the charge. Securities The most common noncash gifts are publicly traded securities which are usually in the form of shares of stock, bonds and mutual funds. You ll receive a federal income tax deduction for the value of the securities up to 30% of your adjusted gross income in the year of the gift with a five-year carryover for any excess. As with the cash gift, your taxes would be reduced by $280; plus you eliminate capital gains tax on the increased value of stock. Securities are considered donated on the date when it is transferred and accepted by the charity. Talk to us about the mechanics of transferring your shares.
