9 Disney FamilyFun Award: A family gives back Disney FamilyFun magazine joins USA WEEKEND in honoring volunteers by recognizing an outstanding family project. The winner: Nancy Jayne and 6-year-old grandson Caleb of New York's Oneida County. For Make A Difference Day, Jayne and Caleb launched a shoe drive to help inhabitants of the Amazon, where entire villages of Brazil's indigenous people go barefoot and, therefore, are left vulnerable to disease. The duo set out collection boxes at stores, offices and their church, and they distributed fliers asking for donations from community members, including Caleb's classmates. Their drive netted 6,000 pairs of shoes, three times what they expected to collect. For their effort in working together as a family to change the lives of others, Jayne and Caleb receive a $2,500 donation for the charity of their choice from Disney FamilyFun.

15 Business as UNusual 2010 In the slow and uncertain turnaround from the 2008 financial crisis, it has become clear that society expects more from its business leaders. At Net Impact, we know future leaders want to use their business skills for positive world impact and they are looking to their MBA programs for help. In just this past year alone, Net Impact welcomed 22 new graduate chapters, while existing chapters continued to strengthen the social and environmental themes of their respective programs. Notable chapter achievements include University of Texas at Austin s McCombs School of Business Sustainable Business Summit with 300 attendees, as well as over 30 schools participating in The Oath Project, a Net Impact partnership that served in the movement to incorporate an ethics oath into the MBA graduation process. And while social and environmental themes have yet to be universally integrated into business school core curricula, programs are offering more than ever. Last year, students completed new responsible management certificates, took electives on topics from Sustainable Supply Chain Management to Social Venture Capital, participated in schoolsubsidized nonprofit internship programs, and much more. With these developments in mind, Net Impact encourages MBA schools to examine the best practices in this guide so they can better attract the growing demographic of students who desire social and environmental change. We also hope that Business as UNusual will help the prospective student find a graduate program that best suits his or her interests.

17 The International Partnership for Service Learning & Leadership MA/MS Graduate Degree ISPL programs combine academic studies and volunteer service with full cultural immersion to give students a deeper, more meaningful study abroad experience. The mission of the International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership is to engage students, educators, and community members in the union of service and learning, so that all may become more civically engaged, interculturally literate, internationally aware, and responsive to the needs of others. IPSL has recently collaborated on writing a chapter that explores how best practices in service learning partnerships apply to multi layered collaboration in an international and interdisciplinary service learning master s degree program. The article is entitled "Institutional Networks and International Service Learning at the Graduate Level" and will appear in the volume "Crossing Boundaries: Tension and Transformation in InternationalService Learning." Although service learning has blossomed as an area of scholarly publication in the past 15 years or so, only a small slice of the resulting body of work has focused on the partnerships at the heart of servicelearning. Not surprisingly, the bulk of what has been published has focused on domestic service learning, typically at the undergraduate level. For nearly 15 years, the International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership (IPSL) has offered a master s program with a 16 week study abroad component and service learning in both domestic and international universities and their surrounding communities. The International Partnership for Service learning and Leadership (IPSL) is a non profit international educational organization that works with four universities and The Intercultural Communication Institute to offer a master s degree focused on international development and service. Each of these universities (Portland State University in Portland, OR, University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica, Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Quito and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, and the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, Mexico), in turn partner with multiple non governmental organizations to provide an extensive service learning component to the curriculum. Using the servicelearning scholarship on partnerships, contributing authors from the IPSL network provide a case study of the IPSL master s program. Don't miss the early bird application deadline for the NEW IPSL MA/MS Degree program in International Development and Service! Applications for Fall 2011 accepted starting November 15, Early Bird Deadline is February 15, Students applying by this date will receive early notification of acceptance. The final application deadline is June 1st, Applications received between February 16 and June 1 will be reviewed and accepted where space available.
