1 REPORTS FROM REPRESENTATIVES OF THE SOCIETY SOCIETY FOR RANGE MANAGEMENT The thirty-sixth annual meeting of the Society for Range Management was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 14 through 17, The opening plenary session featured discussions on the range livestock industry in the Southwest by L. S. Pope, Dean, College of Agriculture and Home Economics, New Mexico State University and on the past and future of range management by Bart Cardon, Dean, College of Agriculture, University of Arizona. Peter C. Meyers, Chief, Soil Conservation Service and Garrey Carruthers, Assistant Secretary, Department of Interior also discussed programs in their respective agencies. Range animals continue to be an important session in the meeting with 48 papers being given. Of particular interest to animal scientists is the recent expansion of the Savory Grazing Method and related research. The grazing method drastically changes range livestock management and has important effects on nutrition, reproductive physiology and behavior. Animal scientists should become involved in research of the method. Public law which authorizes range research funding still has not received an appropriation. Strong lobbying through rancher organizations was recommended. ASAS may consider support, as research developed should concern the range livestock industry and need the input of animal scientists. The 1984 Annual Meeting SRM will be held in Rapid City, South Dakota, February 12 through 17. Titles and a one to two sentence description of the paper are due June 1. The second International Rangeland Congress will be held in Adelaide, Australia, May 14 through 18, Officers for the current year are Gerald W. Thomas, president and Joseph L. Schuster, first vice-president. Martin Vavra ASAS Representative to SRM RALSTON PURINA FELLOWSHIP AWARDS Six Ralston Purina Fellowships with an annual stipend of $6,400 each were awarded for the academic year.
