Semester and Year Change(s) take effect: Spring 2009 Appropriate Computer Abbreviation (30 spaces or less): Pediatric CNS DESCRIPTION OF CHANGE (omit if dropping a course or program): The pediatric clinical nurse specialist (CNS) track was erroneously put through last year as a new program, when in fact it is a new track in and existing program. This submission is to correct that error. We are asking for the addition of a pediatric CNS track in our CNS major and an addition of a post masters certificate as a pediatric CNS. These changes will mirror our current adult health (medical-surgical) CNS offerings (see attachments). Present catalog copy: The Harris College, Nursing offers an innovative Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The MSN has two tracks, ADN to MSN and BSN to MSN. The ADN to MSN program is undergoing revision. Please contact the Nursing Graduate Program Director, Dr. Kathy Baldwin, address: for further information. There are two majors: Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Nursing Education. There are two role foci for the CNS major are adult health (medical-surgical) nursing or pediatric nursing. There are two role foci for the Nursing Education major, adult health/gerontology or parentchild nursing.

2 2 Additionally, a post-master's certificate option is available in both majors for nurses with a previous Master's Degree in another nursing specialty. The amount of course work required for the Post-Master's CNS Certificate is based on transcript review and the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) requirements for CNS-Advanced Practice Nurse recognition. The 12-hour Post-Master's Nursing Education Certificate is composed of three online didactic courses and one precepted teaching practicum course. All didactic course work is offered online. Clinical practicum and teaching practicum courses are supervised by TCU faculty in concert with qualified preceptors. Generally, students will complete their practicum courses in agencies located in their geographical area. If adequate practicum or preceptor resources are not available in the students geographical area concentrated practicum experiences are available in the Fort Worth area. Supporting EVIDENCE OR JUSTIFICATION: When we began our online CNS program in adult health (medical surgical) nursing, we developed it with the idea that we would eventually extend the program to treat age ranges at both ends of the adult track -- pediatric and gerontological. We have been carefully assessing the community need for either track. Last year Children s Hospital of

3 3 Dallas contacted us about re-developing their dormant pediatric CNS role. After a faceto-face meeting with them, we decided to explore development of the pediatric CNS major. The Graduate Studies Committee discussed the possibility at the January meeting and approved development, because the track could be developed using EXISTING COURSES, WHICH ARE SCHEDULED ANNUALLY AND ALREADY HAVE DESIGNATED FACULTY ASSIGNED. Faculty members needed for the pediatric CNS are adjunct clinical faculty members with pediatric expertise. For example, the Director of Education and Research at Children s Hospital of Dallas, a pediatric CNS and nurse practitioner, has agreed to serve as that person. The attached documents show how the pediatric CNS track can be developed using existing courses and how it will fit within our CNS program. In the first attachment the larger underlined text shows the only course in the pediatric CNS that is different from the Adult CNS. Both courses are taught annually in the Nursing Education Major. A post-master s certificate is also requested. This certificate may be needed by pediatric nurse practitioners wishing to become pediatric CNSs. Explain how the change(s) will affect the current outcomes and assessment mechanisms? Additional outcomes of the pediatric CNS will be: 1. More advanced practice nurses to care for the children of Texas, an identified need in the state as evidenced by its inclusion in the state health document, Healthy Texans This will be assessed by tracking employment following graduation through surveys, which are routinely done on all graduates at one and three years post graduation. 2. Pediatric CNSs capable of passing the national certification examination for pediatric CNSs. This will be assessed by obtaining certification status of our graduates on the one and three year surveys. 3. Pediatric CNSs capable of becoming recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing as pediatric CNSs. This will be assessed by student report and/or checking the Board s website database of advanced practice.
