1 Beginning in 2010, the Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship began providing Digital Literacy Trainings in small communities across New Mexico. To date we have trained 1,700 participants, including over 800 small business owners, to use digital tools to improve their business. GCCE s classes are unique in that we link core concepts of marketing, business model development, and systems management to useful, usually free, online tools. Our classes and trainers consistently receive outstanding reviews. Our community engagement approach to digital literacy means that we adapt our curriculum to each community, following a 3-month outreach and marketing campaign in which we gain insight as to the unique needs and opportunities of each community. Each class is designed to provide hands-on experience; classes are each four hours (usually divided into two sessions) and we offer additional Lab Hours. Lab Hours offer class participants one-on-one assistance in building a website, Facebook fan page, Pinterest boards, and more. The mission on GCCE is to support cultural entrepreneurs. Cultural entrepreneurs are found in the music, film, photography, culinary arts, fashion, performance, cultural tourism, agritourism, and traditional arts arenas. Our communities are rich in cultural traditions and assets and we work to provide the entrepreneurs working in the creative and cultural industries with the tools, information, and market access essential to their success. 2 Class 1: PowerUp! Getting Started Getting Started offers beginning students an opportunity to learn the basics of computers with hands-on activities involving equipment hardware and software. At the conclusion of this class, participants will have the skills to identify parts of the computer, will have a basic understanding of software including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Class activities include use of a mouse, USB flash drive, web browser basics and information on setting up a Gmail account. Parts of the computer Mouse skills USB flash drive Operating systems and programs Internet search engines Microsoft Word (Gmail) NOTE: This class is best suited for students who have limited or no experience with computers
3 Class 2: PowerUp! Getting Online Getting Online offers beginning students an opportunity to learn the basics of using Internet search engines, browsers, and with handson activities. At the conclusion of this class, participants will have the skills to effectively search for news, information, and online tools and will have an established account. Connecting to the Internet or a network Opening a browser Using Google (the leading search engine) Effective search techniques Getting started with Facebook Using Flickr and photo editing tools (Gmail) Attaching documents Creating a signature This class is best suited for students who have completed PowerUp! Getting Started or who have basic computer and Internet skills.
4 Class 3: PowerUp! Growing Your Business Online Growing Your Business Online offers beginning students an opportunity to learn the basics of cloud computing, Google documents, blogs and websites, SEO and Google Analytics. At the conclusion of this class, participants will have the skills to effectively know the difference between websites and blogs, practical use of Google documents and cloud computing. Cloud Computing Google Documents Google Drive Databases DropBox Blogs and Websites Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Google Analytics This class is best suited for students who have or who have intermediate computer and Internet skills, have completed PowerUp! Getting Started, PowerUp! Getting Online, or have or are considering creating their own a website.
5 Class 4: PowerUp! Social Media for Your Business Social Media for Your Business offers beginning students an opportunity to learn the basics of Social Media Marketing using Facebook,Twitter, Pinterest, and other social tools. At the conclusion of this class, participants will have the skills to begin effectively using social media for their businesses. Social Media Marketing Why Social Media Matters Developing content Facebook Twitter Pinterest, Dabble, and similar tools Getting the word out with TweetDeck This class is best suited for advanced students or students who have completed the other PowerUp! classes.
