These were the words I used last year at this time, to describe the conditions out-of-doors. Well, I m adding the word snit to the above nouns. Draw your own conclusions. I love winter but even I, who sleeps with 2 windows open and a fan when it s below 0, think I would like to see some green now. Let me inspire you with some art stuff. Let s start with an March Artist Birthday Last year at this time our featured artist was Rosa Bonheur, a realistic artist so I thought I go the opposite this year and feature Grace Hartigan, an Abstract Expressionist, and part Pop Artist. Quiz: In the painting at the right Billboard by Grace Hartigan, can you pick out the tube of toothpaste, bottle of wine, piano keys, bunch of grapes, a face? When I was teaching, this was one of my favorite paintings to do a critique with the students. They loved to come to the board and point the objects out. Grace Hartigan: born March , died November 15, Movement: Abstract Expressionism Grace Hartigan did, indeed, get her start as an Abstract Expressionist- - she was a "second generation" member of the New York School, and its most visible female member. She very

2 quickly moved on, though, and caught tremendous flak from artist friends and critics for introducing representational elements into her work. She has been called a precursor to Pop Art (a movement with which she did not care to be associated). In honesty, Hartigan was so intellectually curious that her work changed regularly over six decades. The most accurately descriptive stylistic phrase would be "her own." Hartigan's belief that painting must have "content and emotion" continued throughout her career. Even though her work is often associated with Pop art, Hartigan disliked the idea of mass manufacturing that Pop embraced, preferring the emotion generated by the evident hand of the artist. Hartigan's best- known works combine the abstraction of her early work with recognizable images from everyday life or motifs from art history, particularly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The distinction between abstraction and figuration is often blurred by her experimental brushwork and lack of shading. To read more on her life and work go to; What s Been Happening?

3 What s been happening? Deb Nell (February Meeting) Deborah was a delight. We were fascinated watching her demonstrate her unique painting technique using acrylic paint and inks and an atomizer to distribute the paint across her special Yupo paper (a slick, synthetic paper). Marilyn Seeling Marilyn is off to Philly and is presenting her newest pieces of jewelry to submit to Philadelphia Flower Show. I had to create a bolo tie and belt buckle to go with a western movie and it had to be made from all plant material. She wrote. We wish her the best of luck. March Meeting: Steve Getz & Carol Cillo We have extended a personal invitation to the Clinton County Arts Council members to this meeting. During the meeting, well-known artists, Steve Getz and Carol Cillo will be sharing their artwork and techniques. They have such a wide range of talent, from painting realistic to abstract to computer art. They are the President and Vice President respectfully, of the CCAC. MessagefromMaggie(our resident Southern Belle) The portrait class is going very well. Full house at first meeting and looks like tomorrow is full as well: Details below if you want to participate. AND don t forget to bring your art book at the March 5 meeting. 1. Maggie is conducting a portrait drawing get-together at her house, 10am, on the second and fourth Thursdays starting in February. Bring one of your nice art books to the next meeting and exchange it with another member until the following meeting, then you can exchange for another. You DO get your book back!!! Book-study Remember.we are started our Book-study group on March 1 at 6pm at Rita & Steve Bower s house. If you are interested, you can still attend. We will get you caught up. 4 Combination Show; CCAC & BEAL As you must have heard, we are having the Combination Show coming up in April. I sent all the information in the last Quill. We are accepting work via Jpegs, there will be a jury process at this end and finally at the Station end. Please read ALL the details and important dates. Take a chance and enter. Next year we are hosting it. You may enter 2 pieces but only 17 total will be selected. If you have misplaced the information, download the PDF Guidlines from our website. Remember: Jpegs only!!! Membership Meeting For our March 5 Meeting, I have invited the members of the CCAC. I also thought it would be nice if each of our members could invite someone to be their guest to the meeting as well. So, if you could pick a friend or aquaintance (artistically incline or not) and just invite them by , that would be delightful. Membership Membership for the League is still growing. Just yesterday I had another new member in the mail. Fantastic! Our board members have been busy recruiting as well. Good for you!!!! Looks like 3/4s of the members are paid up. Also, great job! Remember to send your membership in so you don t lose access to my meaningful s and newsletters. Remember to pay your dues! In order to participate in contests or workshops and to continue to receive the Quill and other s, all dues must be up- to- date. If you need a membership form, please me and I will send you one in the snail mail, or download off of our website. Genetti Gallery The first Genetti Grille Gallery show is going on. The first artists, Deb Trate and Gretchen Mangiardi are ready to go and their opening is March 6, First Friday, 5-8 pm. I hope all of our members can attend. This is a big step for us and we want it to be successful. As I look at the Quills last year at this time and then the Quills this year, I can t get over how many events (of all kinds) are going on each month NOW. I know I am busy, and you all could be as well with all the fun things we offer; book club, portrait class, 3 art shows, Ways Garden, Art Openings and Receptions with the art posse. Holy Moly!

5 Rita Bower s Saturday Art Workshops Rita has many classes starting Feb. 14 th. I sent the list a while back via so contact her for more information on any of these classes. Call: or at rbower3335@comcast.net Still-life Project Opening Reception, May 1 6 to 9 How are your still-lifes coming? I finally got mine done. I sent an out asking who was going to exhibit and we have about 12 people so far and, as promised, those names will be put on the poster for the show to advertise the artists. We have a really cool venue. Barb Andreason of the Pajama Factory offered a studio space which seems perfect and we can use it for the whole month of May! It is studio 27, near the ceramic studio so it will get a lot of exposure plus the May Fest at the Factory will be going on at the same time! We will have our Opening Reception, 6 to 9pm on First Friday in May and May Fest is on First Saturday. So, if you exhibit, you will have great exposure. AND if you want your name on the poster, me ASAP! ****Drop of date, April 27 & 28, 3 to 6pm, NO LATER. Ways Garden Ways Garden is right around the corner. We have a new Information Sheet and Application which can be accessed through the website under Forms for Artwork, Membership, and Contests.
