1 Master of SOCIAL WORK Graduate PROGRAMS
2 The Master of Social Work program at Monmouth University prepares its graduates for professional social work practice. The program strives to educate students to secure social and economic justice, advance human rights, and improve the quality of life of vulnerable families, individuals, organizations, and communities locally, nationally, and globally. Students are grounded with a deep understanding of human diversity and society. The curriculum supports its mission through three perspectives: social and economic justice through the advancement of human rights, strengthsbased empowerment, and practice with families within a global context. Social workers with master s degrees have access to multiple opportunities, including applying to become licensed social workers (LSW). Further, students who study Clinical Practice with Families and Children can later apply to be licensed clinical social workers (LCSW). Monmouth University s Master of Social Work program enables those with liberal arts degrees in various backgrounds, such as psychology, anthropology, or sociology, to put their knowledge of human behavior, social problems, and diverse communities to practical use. This program is offered both full- and parttime. The full-time, regular-standing program can be completed in two years and includes 60 credits and 1,000 hours of fieldwork. The part-time program can be completed in either three-and-a-half or four years and also is 60 credits and 1,000 hours of fieldwork. Students with a baccalaureate degree in social work from a college or university accredited by the CSWE can apply for advanced standing. Advanced standing students complete the MSW in one year full-time or two years part-time by taking 30 credits and fulfilling the second-year field practicum of 500 hours in a specialized area of concentration. For more information about the Social Work program admission process, please visit or contact the Graduate Admission Office at Graduate student housing is available; learn more at
3 Candidates can choose from one of two concentrations: Clinical Practice with Families and Children or International and Community Development. Both concentrations balance classroom and fieldwork experiences so that students have the opportunity to gain extensive practical experience. Clinical Practice with Families and Children The Clinical Practice with Families and Children (CPFC) concentration prepares students to practice in a variety of settings including schools, mental health environments, child abuse prevention teams, family- and child-centered clinical practices, as well as substance abuse programs and practices. Through a selection of strengths-based approaches, the concentration works to address family- and child-focused concerns across a needs spectrum from poverty and homelessness to communication and interpersonal counseling. This is the only MSW program in New Jersey providing course work that fulfills the educational requirements for New Jersey licensure as a clinical alcohol and drug counselor (LCADC). Field internships are available locally, all over the state of New Jersey, and in the Philadelphia and New York City areas. The MSW program has allowed me to grow into a professional. My professors and instructors supported me through every obstacle and every celebration both in the classroom and out in the field. Not only did I leave Monmouth with my Masters Degree in Social Work, I left with connections that will last a lifetime. -Samantha K. Schween, 14 Social Worker, The Jersey Shore Adult Healthcare Center For more information, visit
4 The Post-Master s Certificate in Play Therapy is an 18-credit certificate program approved by the Association for Play Therapy that prepares students for the Registered Play Therapy (RPT) certification. This program offers flexible evening and weekend schedules and is designed for those with a master s degree in a medical or mental health field (MSN, MSW, MA). Eligibility for licensure in that discipline is also required. Monmouth University School of Social Work s Master of Social Work (MSW) program is ranked as one of the best programs by U.S.News & World Report s Best Graduate Schools. The program also offers one of the few international tracks in the nation. Monmouth University is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) for its Master of Social Work degree. 25 % Of field supervisors are MSW program alumni. International and Community Development This concentration prepares students for grassroots organizing, international social work careers, and more. Social work practitioners work with individuals and communities to enhance the growth and the fulfillment of potential throughout the life cycle. Likewise, social workers accompany communities as they work toward meeting the basic needs of all and extending to everyone the opportunity to fulfill their aspirations. Social work practice is aimed at improving quality of life including income level, equity, human rights, social and economic justice, democracy, environmental protection, and peace. Fieldwork is evaluated within the context of the classroom or in seminars. Students focus in depth on the application of theory and research particular to the practice of international and community development. Students in this concentration may elect to do a local or an international internship. International placements have included Vietnam, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Chile, Ireland, and Bangladesh. THE TAKEAWAY Ü Learn from faculty members who are accomplished scholars and whose teaching is informed by continued practice. Ü Expand your professional experience with real-time practice in hands-on classes and through domestic field experiences and international placements. Ü Excel academically in small classes that provide individual attention. Ü Enjoy flexibility and mobility in career growth and opportunities. Graduate scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Learn more by visiting: Field placement opportunities in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and metropolitan New York area field placements
