10 AGENDA Overview of the Self-Guided Discovery Initiative Description of Self-Guided Discovery Review of the Application Process and Deadlines Question and Answer 10
11 WHAT IS SELF-GUIDED DISCOVERY? Self-Guided Discovery enables a job seeker with a disability and their support network (e.g., staff, family members, etc.) to identify their own ideal conditions for employment and develop a career plan of their own, with the help of a facilitator or coach at key points in the process. This Discovery process includes Discovering Personal Genius, an employment planning tool and model for individual employment evaluation that results in a comprehensive vocational profile, which can be used to develop a customized employment plan. 11
12 WHAT IS CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT? Customized employment means individualizing the employment relationship between employees and employers in ways that meet the needs of both. - Federal Register, June 26, 2002, Vol. 67, No. 123 pp Customized Employment is based on an individualized determination of the strengths, needs, and interests of the job seeker, but is also designed to meet the specific needs of the employer. Customized Employment may include employment developed through negotiation of job tasks, selfemployment, or other strategies that result in job responsibilities being customized and individually negotiated to fit the needs of the individual. 12
