1 Education grants to individuals This information sheet is for prospective applicants to the Grants for the arts programme. Grants for the arts is a competitive programme and you should read this and any other relevant guidance, including our How to apply booklet (available in print or online), before you submit your application. We do not give grants to individuals in statutory further or higher education. This information sheet suggests some sources of information on funding for study. It is not a complete list. 2 1 Where to get information Association of Commonwealth Universities For information summaries address basic questions on international study opportunities at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Commonwealth countries. Old Brewer s Yard Neal Street Covent Garden WC2H 9UY Phone: Fax: Website: The Educational Grants Advisory Service A membership organisation that advises students about non-statutory sources of financial help, specialising in advice about educational trust funds. They have a database of trusts and charities. You should make your first enquiry in writing to the Student Advisor, stating your name and age, course details, personal circumstances and the nature of your financial difficulty. They also offer advice about support from education authorities, research councils and scholarship agencies. They provide information on sponsorships, loans, grants and benefit regulations. 2

They also produce the NUS Welfare Information pack, which includes information on grants, awards and alternative financial support. 4 Career Development Loans Career Development Loans are available from Barclays, The Co-operative Bank and The Royal Bank of Scotland in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council. You can apply if you: are over 18 years old live or intend to train in the UK intend to use the education or training to work in the UK or EU are not getting funding from any other source for the course. You can only apply for a course in the UK that is up to two years in length (full-time, parttime, open or distance learning) as long as it is related to a job you want to do. Career Development Loans of 80% (100% in some cases) will cover course fees, books, materials and expenses (living expenses for full-time courses only) and can be from 300 to 8,000. The Learning and Skills Council pays the interest while you study. You start repaying the loan (with interest) a month after you have completed the course. You can defer payment for up to five months after you have finished your course if you are registered unemployed at the time. The help is different depending on what part of the UK you usually live in. If you normally live in England, go to to find out what help is available, how much, and how and when you should apply. 4

5 If you are an EU national that is, a national of a member state of the European Union or the family member of an EU national, you can get information about the financial support arrangements while you are studying at college in England from the SLC EU Customer Services Team. A Guide to the Major Trusts Volumes 1 and each Regarded as the fundraiser s bible, these essential reference works provide the only source of independent critical analysis of what trusts do in practice. Each volume contains recent grant information, contact details, deadlines, exclusions and applications advice for each trust.
