9 9 of 14 Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Rationale for Program Changes The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) prepares students for the highest level of nursing practice with individuals, families, populations and systems. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has proposed the DNP degree be the entry level for all advanced practice nurses by Hallmarks of the program include an emphasis on leadership in relationship to health systems and organizational management, advanced nursing management of patient care, skill in quality improvement, application of informatics for practice and health care improvement, and competence in diversity, inclusion, health policy, advocacy, and ethical decision making in health care. The DNP Program includes DNP core courses and electives in students areas of specialization. Students are required to complete a written Doctoral Professional Examination after the successful completion of synchronous courses. The final outcome for students in the DNP program is the development of a DNP Scholarly Project. The Doctor of Nursing Practice Program was approved as a Post-Masters program, for implementation by the Ohio Board of Regents in summer of 2008 with the first students enrolled in courses in autumn The DNP program was evaluated for accreditation in autumn of 2010 and has been recommended for accreditation through the American Colleges of Collegiate Nursing Education (ACCNE). There have been no significant program changes since the implementation of the DNP Program in The first graduates of the program will be in spring quarter The DNP Program is an online distance education offering that provides a flexible and convenient option for students who are pursuing the clinical doctorate degree. All courses in the program are offered through the University s CARMEN website. A variety of distance learning technologies using synchronous and asynchronous approaches are used to educate students. All students in the DNP Program have the same resources available to them as graduate students who are not enrolled in an online/distance education program. In the quarter system, students complete 75 post masters credit hours and may elect to complete their program of study through a two year full time or three year part time/full time approach (See Tables for the plans of study). In the semester approach, the 75 quarter credits are converted to 50 semester credit hours. This is a straight quarters to semester conversion for total hours in the program. Minor changes to hours of the core courses are outlined below. In order to meet certification requirements, DNP students must have a minimum of 500 clinical hours post master s for the DNP degree to be awarded and these hours need to occur in each year of study. Clinical practicum hours occur in NP8400, NP8500, NP8781, NP8480 and NP 8898 I & II (Total = 525 practicum hrs). Clinical hours in both the quarter based curriculum and the semester based curriculum are calculated at the university required 3:1 ratio of clinical hours to credit hours. NP8400 Leadership Throughout Organizations and Systems. This course remains at 3 credits in order to provide for a sufficient number of clinical hours towards the 500 post master s degree hours required by CCNE. Currently, 1 quarter hour provides 30 hours per quarter of clinical experience. In the semester format, each credit hour provides 37.5 hours of clinical per semester. Two hours per week of didactic learning activities is required to adequately cover the course material. Page 1 of 6

10 10 of 14 NP8401 Strategic Macrosystem Management for the Doctor of Nursing Practice. In the quarter-based curriculum this course (NP945) is a 4 credit hour course. In the semester curriculum, this course will be directly converted into a 3 credit hour course. NP8500 Health Policy for Doctoral Nursing Practice. N8510 Ethics in Healthcare Practice, Research, and Policy. In the quarter-based curriculum this course (N755) is a 3 credit hour course. In the semester curriculum, this course will be directly converted into a 2 credit hour course. N8520 Applied Nursing Informatics. In the quarter-based curriculum this course (N885) is a 3 credit hour course. In the semester curriculum, this course will be directly converted into a 2 credit hour course. NP8780 Clinical Effectiveness and Translation in Clinical Science & NP8781 Methods and Measurement in Clinical Nursing Science. In the quarter based curriculum, there are 3 core research courses (NP951 Scholarly Inquiry in Clinical Nursing Science; NP952 Methods and Measurement in Clinical Nursing Science; NP953 Clinical Effectiveness and Translation in Clinical Science). In the semester system, there will be two core research courses (NP8780 Clinical Effectiveness and Translation in Clinical Nursing Science and NP8781 Methods and Measurement in Clinical Nursing Science). Content from NP951, NP952, & NP953 has been redistributed into these two semester based courses to improve academic delivery to students and facilitate students learning and completion of their DNP project NP8480 Quality Improvement in Doctoral Nursing Practice. NP8490 Health Promotion in the Age of Personalized Healthcare. In the quarter-based curriculum this course (NP913) is a 3 credit hour course. In the semester curriculum, this course will be directly converted into a 2 credit hour course. NP8193 Individual Studies. In the quarter-based curriculum, this course is a 2 credit hour course. In the semester-curriculum, it will be a 2 credit hour course. Faculty determined that DNP students needed this amount of hours in order to prepare for their written examination. NP8898 Clinical Immersion I, II. In the quarter-based curriculum, these courses (NP959 I, NP959 II, NP959 III) are 7 credit hour courses each. In the semester-curriculum, they will be 7 credit hours each. Faculty determined that DNP students needed this amount of hours to acquire knowledge in content related to their clinical specialties. In each N semester credit hours are for didactic content and 5 are for clinical practicum hours (187.5 clinical practicum hours per semester). Page 2 of 6

11 11 of 14 NP8998 DNP Final Project. In the quarter based curriculum, this course is a 3 credit hour course. In the semester-curriculum, it will remain a 3 credit hour course. Faculty determined that DNP students needed this amount of hours in order to complete components of their DNP Scholarly Project. Electives. In the semester based curriculum, 7 quarter credit hours of electives were required. We are reducing the number of required elective hours to 4 semester credit hours. As in the quarter based curriculum, elective credits can be taken within the College of Nursing or outside of the College. Electives must be approved by the student s faculty advisor. Table 1. 13 13 of 14 DNP Transition Plans DNP students enter into the program as a cohort and move through the required courses as a cohort. All students work with a faculty advisor to develop a plan of study. Students currently in the DNP program will complete the program in the quarter based curriculum. If there are current DNP students who for any reason are not able to complete any courses, those will be handled on an individual bases and students may be required to complete an independent study all such requests will be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Students entering autumn 2011 will follow the plans of study outlined below. Any deviations will be addressed on an individual basis with the students advisor and the Graduate Studies Committee.
