3 COLLEGE OVERVIEW Montgomery College, one of Maryland s oldest community colleges, is a multi-campus institution located in Montgomery County, Maryland. It has earned a reputation as one of the leading community colleges in the nation by applying a winning formula: excellence in teaching, innovative partnerships, and unrivaled leadership. Montgomery College is a public, open admissions community college with campuses in Germantown, Rockville, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring, plus workforce development/continuing education centers and off-site programs throughout Montgomery County, Maryland. The College serves more than 55,000 students a year, through both credit and noncredit programs, in more than 100 areas of study. CAMPUS PROFILE The Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TPSS) Campus is located in a dynamic urban neighborhood near the southern border of Montgomery County. The campus celebrates and embraces the diversity in the local community and responds to local, regional and national needs by offering a comprehensive educational experience with signature programs in the Health Sciences and the Visual and Performing Arts. Enrollment has grown by more than twenty percent over the last six years to nearly 7500 students who hail from more than 100 countries. The Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus is in the midst of an amazing transformation. In the past ten years, the size of the physical plant has tripled, adding several new buildings and renovating existing buildings to better support the mission of the College. The most recent addition to the campus is the newly renovated Commons Building with nine state of the art classrooms, a social sciences computer learning lab and the Bliss Conference Center, which hosts both college and community engagement events. Plans are underway for the redesign and renovation of other buildings on campus, including a new Science and Math Center, to meet the growing needs of students and the community. 3

4 OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW The Associate Dean of Health Sciences / Director of Nursing is an administrative position, who reports to the Dean of Health Sciences, at the Health Sciences Center on the Takoma Park/ Silver Spring Campus. The Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TPSS) Campus is home to one of the College s signature programs, the Nursing Program, which has doubled in size over the last ten years. As the Director of one of the largest Nursing programs in Maryland, the selected candidate will be working with a diverse, as well as large, faculty, staff and student populations. The Health Sciences Center provides an excellent learning environment with state-of-the-art medical equipment and technology, including a new simulation suite. The selected candidate will have leadership responsibilities for the management, including budget, supervision and evaluation of the Nursing Program and its instructional curriculum and services to ensure excellent NCLEX pass rates and encouraging students to seek employment upon graduation. The ideal candidate will have experience with accreditation as the NLN will make their site visit in There are no anticipated issues with the visit and several preparatory committees have been formed to prepare for the visit. In addition to accreditation experience, the successful candidate will have a background in simulation and passion for this teaching model. This Program has been selected to serve as the center for simulation education for all other community college in Maryland. Staying abreast of a changing environment in nursing practice and education is a necessity. Finally, the next Associate Dean will have a proven success rate in increasing retention and completion rates among nursing students. 4

5 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Master s Degree in Nursing Three years of progressive academic leadership experience in RN instructional nursing program Teaching experience in a nursing program at a college level Demonstrated ability to use MS Office Suite and related software programs Knowledge of nursing curriculum and evidence-based education and experience in curriculum development Knowledge of ACEN accreditation processes, as well as approval process by the Maryland Board of Nursing Ability to assess outcomes of Nursing courses/program for purposes of student success and program accountability Demonstrated leadership experience and skills in a nursing program, including curriculum development and working with cultural diversity Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills Experience in creating, organizing, and maintaining accurate office files, logs and records Leadership experience in a nursing program An unencumbered Registered Nurse license from Maryland or a compact state, or ability to obtain Ability to write grant proposals and respond to RFP s Experience in administering and managing grants to promote student success Must be knowledgeable about current instructional delivery strategies (e.g. concept-based curriculum, active learning techniques) Ability to think creatively, and with innovation in mind, to meet the current needs of the profession and students. This would include alternative educational delivery and instructional tools such as distance learning techniques Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral Degree Minimum of ten (10) years of teaching experience in a nursing program Minimum of five (5) years of recent teaching experience (within the last 7 years) in an undergraduate nursing program (associate or bachelor s degree programs) Teaching experience in a community college Experience in grant writing, since Montgomery College is progressive in applying for grants related to Nursing and other Health Sciences Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to accomplish job duties Understanding of community college mission and the student population the community colleges serve, as well as commitment to a comprehensive community college philosophy An understanding of multi-cultural aspects of students, as well as patients, is critical in preparing students for success and competence both in school and the workplace upon graduation 5
