5 ICD-10-CM Training: Equipment Recommendations for the Workshop All attendees will receive a 2015 ICD-10-CM manual, compact disc with General Equivalency Mapping (GEM) files, or thumb drive with important reference materials. You do not need to bring any equipment, but we have found that you get more value from the workshop if you bring a laptop computer, smart phone, or tablet. With these devices, you will speed up selection of the right ICD-10-CM code. If you are bringing any of the recommended electronic devices, we have some recommendations for you. Laptop Computer: 1. CD-ROM or (preferred) a USB port. (We cannot support Firewire or Thunderbolt connections). 2. If you do not have a USB or CD-ROM drive, we recommend downloading in advance the General Equivalence Mapping (GEM) files on your phones or tablets that will be needed prior to the course. That web link is: You ll need Wi-Fi connection-capability if you are downloading this onsite and have no USB or CD drive. 3. Adobe Reader (Free download available at ). This will enable you to read and search the files you ll need. 4. The Adobe files are large and the CMS website compresses the files. This is known as zipping them. Most laptop computers today have an Unzip program that will know to work so you can access and then save the Adobe files for use during the course. Additionally, the 2015 Guidelines for ICD-10 are very helpful. This pdf file can be downloaded from the Centers for Disease Control website at the following link: 5. Power cords and connectors for YOUR computer so that you can plug in. Do not plan to run off your battery for the entire course length there will be an outlet close to you, so you will not need to bring an extension cord. ipad / iphone/ Kindle/ Kindle Fire/ Android/ Windows: 1. Wi-Fi connection-capable (if downloading onsite) 2. If your tablet does not have a USB port or USB adaptor, we recommend downloading in advance the GEM files that will be needed for the course. Before down loading the CMS files you will need follow these steps: STEP 1: Download the free Adobe Reader for ipad and iphone from the itunes Store: (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adobe-reader/id ?mt=8&v0=www-naus- ITUHOME-TOPAPPLICATIONS&ign-mpt=uo%3D2 ) OR Down load the free Adobe Reader via an Android app site such as Android Market or Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adobe.reader&hl=en.
6 STEP 2: Download an UNZIP application from one of the links above. The UNZIP application is necessary to open the files from CMS. Be sure it will allow searching. Some UNZIP applications only open files and do not facilitate searching, which is important during the course. STEP 3: Download the GEM files from the web link: ***We encourage you to do this before you arrive at the meeting. However, if you are downloading this onsite and have no USB port you need Wi-Fi connection-capability. (The Adobe Reader and the UNZIP applications are still needed for the CMS downloads). 3. Power cord and special connectors there will be a plug-in power source for you to utilize near you; you won t need to bring an extension cord. REMINDER: You should not plan on being able to run off your battery for the entire course length. ICD-10-CM Apps You may also wish to use an App for searching the 2015 ICD-10-CM during the workshop. There are free and purchasable apps available for laptops, smart phones and some tablets. While we do not endorse a particular app, here is a guide on what to search for below. Remember that unless you are a facility who currently uses ICD-9-PCS coding you want the ICD-10-CM version which covers office-based services. Also try and get a 2014 or later version. 1. iphone and ipad: in the itunes App Store, search on ICD-10-CM. There are quite a few to choose from, costs on most are nominal or in some cases, free. Read the App reviews and be sure you can search in both directions (ICD-9 to ICD-10 and vice versa). 2. Windows 8 computers and Windows phones: The selection is more limited when searching for 2015 ICD-10-CM but there are choices. 3. Kindle and Kindle Fire: Search for ICD-10-CM. 4. Android: Go to the Google Play Store and search on ICD-10-CM. As above on the itunes Apps, there are many free and nominal cost options. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to educating you and your staff. Thank you, Kevin Corcoran President Corcoran Consulting Group
