2 SPATIAL REACH Spatial reach means how far you can reach in the world today, effectively. An example of spatial reach is seen in the combination of spatial relationships, in many products, available on the retail shelf today. Your mobile phone may contain a processor from US, a circuit board from China, chips from Taiwan or India, colour display from South Korea and lens from Germany. Another example is the movement of trillions of dollars through electronic channels at phenomenal speeds from nation to nation, bank to bank and person to person. The international currency trading has become like a global casino. Each currency has a changing spatial reach, and the dollar has the longest reach, as it unofficially substitutes for local money in many countries. 2

3 NANO AGE Scientific and technological breakthroughs along with fusion of IT and biotech is leading to radical miniaturization. As a result the content for raw material is becoming smaller and smaller. Impact of nano technology is already being felt in major port cities of the world. Nano technology is giving spatial jolts to job markets, technologies, money and people around the planet. It is causing spatial turbulence. 3

4 GPS - DRIVE Synchronization of voice and data streams, in every ATM withdrawal, is done through communication networks based on GPS timing. The GPS satellites have cesium and rubidium atomic clocks on board, which provide nano second- level timing throughout the world. Scientists predict that the day will come when food packages will have embedded chips that will continuously report to the shipper the changing food quality, as the package moves from place to place. Transportation and food industry will be completely transformed as the economics of both production and distribution improves drastically. 4

5 OBSOLEDGE TRAP The rate at which knowledge is becoming obsolete is leading to a new term called obsoledge. Today decisions are being taken keeping this in mind. Those who are not sensitive to this, are paying on account of degraded decision making. The rate of change determines the law of obsoledge, and the speed at which acceleration takes place determines the rate at which still more obsoledge accumulates. 5

6 PROSUMER Prosumer is defined as an individual or group who produces and consumes his own output. Today, highly personal needs and wants which can not be supplied by market, are making normal consumers into prosumers. The 50 trillion dollar money economy can not survive for 10 minutes without the prosumer. Prosuming takes myriad form like baking brownies, building churches or writing exclusive software. Economists believe that GDP is a grossly distorted product since it excludes the prosumer. Today prosuming economy is equal to the money economy and the value of non monetized half of the world economy is becoming clear. 6

7 In US, more than 1 trillion purchases are done online today, which otherwise would have required stock brokers, travel agents and sales clerks. The 20 billion computer gaming industry is an example of prosumer innovation. Prosumers contribute to the structure and content of the demand and are responsible for changes in how, when and where the companies meet their demands. Alvin Toffler believes that prosumers are the unsung heroes of the future economy. Many of the 3 billion sites on the web are the product of prosuming. A good example of prosuming is the programme Skype which allows free telephone calls from one PC to another. 7

8 FLASH MARKETS As new products are flooding the market at blinding speed, the life cycle of the products is shortening. Customers in a hurry, revolt against time wasting complexity and demand unbundling of unwanted function. Growing customization of products is leading to customization of prices, instead of standard or negotiable prices. Therefore in any developed market today, 2 basic processes are at work marketization and demarketization. The speed at which this is happening is seen in the washing machine becoming paramount and the dhobi obsolete. 8

9 The printing and developing of film industry has been demarketized to such an extent that the prosumer can do his own printing from his digital camera, through a computer and a printer. Marketeers are predicting actual whole fabrication facilities with do-it-yourself kits being available with every prosumer. Earlier, economically valuable knowledge was limited but now it flashes non stop across millions of screens and monitors from Manhattan to Mumbai. 13 Airlines have joined together to create an Aeroxchange which is a virtual fair to display their wares and cut deals. In 2007, e-commerce had crossed a 3 trillion dollar business and revolutionary changes are taking place in property bases, capital formation and markets. 9

10 MALLS WAVE The young, educated, confident, middle class, impatient consumer is the wave of the future. Shopping malls satiate his needs and make his hunger grow. We will study the mall culture in Delhi and the issues that are arising, out of burgeoning malls in the capital. 10

11 SIZE OF THE INDIA S RETAIL INDUSTRY Size of the India s retail industry: Rs 12 Lakh Crores. Contribution of Organized sector : Rs Crores Contribution of Un-organized Sector : Rs 11.5 Lakh Crores Discount retail stores are emerging fast like Vishal retail, the Loot, the Grab store and Coupon. 45% of the branded goods are sold at discounted rate. The discount offered varies from 25 to 80 %. Such discount stores work at high volume and low margins 11

23 WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL CLEARANCE? A new EIA notification dated is in force whereby all projects are categorized into two categories i.e. A and B. Category A projects are to be appraised by Expert Appraisal Committee & such projects are decided by Central Government. Category B projects are to be appraised by the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) and decided by State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority. In the absence of duly constituted SEIAA or SEAC in Delhi so far, category B projects are being treated as category A projects, and therefore all projects of category A & B are being appraised and decided by MoEF, Govt. of India. 23
