13 THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL IMPACT OF THE OIL AND GAS REVOLUTION IN NORTH AMERICA by Dr. Anas Alhajji Dr. Anas Alhajji, Chief Economist. NGP Energy Capital Management, Irving, TX Abstract The shale revolution is the single most important challenge facing OPEC since its creation. It has already split OPEC into two halves and is threatening the strategic objectives of OPEC governments that were designed to diversify their income and achieve economic development. U.S. shale oil production has flipped the energy landscape upside down and changed the direction of global trade in energy sources. U.S. LNG exports in late will accentuate these trends. Shale Production has accomplished in five years what U.S. policy makers failed to do in the last 50 years. Biography Dr. Anas Alhajji is Chief Economist at NGP Energy Capital Management. He leads the firm s macroanalysis of the oil, natural gas and related markets as well as the overall economic environment. Dr. Alhajji is a noted author. He is a regular contributor to national, international publications and academic journals with more than 800 papers, articles and columns to his credit. His articles have appeared in numerous countries in more than ten languages. He is a syndicated columnist and his work is cited in over 25 books. He is also the moderator of the Oil, Gas, and Energy Law Forum (OGEL). Dr. Alhajji is quoted in numerous newspapers and magazines including the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, USA Today, the New York Times, Newsweek, Forbes, to mention a few. Dr. Alhajji served as a Professor of Economics at two universities which are strongly affiliated with the energy industry, the University of Oklahoma and the Colorado School of Mines. Before joining NGP, he was on the faculty of the business school at Ohio Northern University where he held the George Patton Chair of Business and Economics and taught courses in energy economics and policy and international economics. Dr. Alhajji is also a contributing editor for one of the energy industry s premier publications, World Oil Magazine, and serves on the editorial board of several energy publications. 15 Organic Shale Petrophysics by Gary A. Simpson Gary A. Simpson, Senior Petrophysical Advisor. HESS Corporation, Houston, TX Abstract The recognition of potential organic rich shale pay intervals from subsurface logs of previously drilled wells is the first step in developing a resource play. Almost all of the known productive North American shale hydrocarbon sections have been previously encountered by industry operators drilling for conventional reservoirs. The question to answer is, which hot shale sections and intervals have economic potential? An extensive tool box of evaluation metrics including various subsurface logs, coring and petrophysical evaluation techniques are presented to quantify and qualify resource potential of organic shales. A discussion will also highlight what attributes such as geopressure and organic maturity separate good from poor shale reservoirs and the differences between shale gas and shale oil reservoirs. Biography Gary Simpson is Senior Petrophysical Advisor at Hess Corporation, Houston Texas. He is a member of the Unconventional Resource Technology team advising business unit asset teams on research and development projects for unconventional reservoirs. He has more than 36 years of industry experience. Prior to joining Hess, he held operating company positions for Shell, ConocoPhillips and Forest Oil Corporation. Gary s early experience was in the oil field service sector holding positions with Halliburton, Computalog Inc.(now part of Weatherford), and Perf-O-Log(now part of Schlumberger). He s worked in field engineering, sales, interpretation development, petrophysics, technical marketing and as a global product champion for pulsed neutron tools. Gary has authored more than 20 technical papers and articles, primarily relating to the development of interpretation methods and logging techniques for measurements made with pulsed neutron, carbon oxygen and gamma ray spectroscopy tools. He is a member of the SPWLA and SPE. Gary is a 1978 graduate from Texas A&M University. 14

16 Integrating Basic Shale Oil Petrophysics into Recovery Factor Analysis by Robert Barba Robert Barba, Integrated Energy Services, Inc., Austin, TX Abstract An initial recovery factor analysis study of +150 Wolfcamp and Cline horizontal well completions indicate an average recovery factor of 8.2% for a drainage area of 160 acres. The study suggests the producing heights are limited to the propped height and does not exceed 50 to 60 feet of height regardless of the fluid type pumped. Recovery factor analysis involves the integration of hydrocarbon pore volume from a core calibrated petrophysical analysis with the estimated ultimate recovery from the lateral wellbore. Key benefits of recovery factor analysis are production performance estimates for landing zone options, normalization of performance among wellbores with varying oil in place volumes, and establishment of best practices for well completions. The presentation will feature Field examples to validate the process. Biography Robert Barba is President, CEO and principal consultant of Integrated Energy Services, Inc., a petrophysical and completion optimization service firm. Bob has authored 33 technical papers on the integration of petrophysics with completion designs, horizontal wells, and reservoir characterization projects. Recent major consulting projects have involved optimizing completion practices in horizontal organic shale wells for major operators in the Marcellus shale, Utica, Cline, Eagle Ford, Bakken, Wolfberry, and Wolfcamp. Robert served as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer on integrating petrophysics with the hydraulic fracture treatment optimization process. He has focused on the integration of petrophysics with completion designs in a variety of North America reservoirs, conducting numerous field studies for operators evaluating the effective frac length in over 2000 wells and providing "best practices" recommendations based on the study results (SPE 90483). He has been responsible for the petrophysical analysis of 40 major fields worldwide as part of integrated reservoir characterization studies identifying remaining mobile hydrocarbons. Bob started as an open-hole engineer and advanced to product development manager with Schlumberger before spending the last 23 years as a recognized expert petrophysicist and completion specialist. He is a member of SPE, SPWLA, and AAPG. Robert has a BS from the US Naval Academy and MBA from the University of Florida. 15

17 NATIONAL SIPES SCHOLARSHIP RECEIPENT Ciel Elizalde Presentation of Scholarship by Patrick Cox, 2014 Dallas Chapter SIPES President Ciel Elizalde, M.S. Geology Student, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX Abstract Natural fractures are typically unpredictable at the subsurface and are critical aspects to recognize during reservoir characterization. Thrust faults are predictably related to beddingplane slip and contact geometry. Ciel s thesis investigates the spatial distribution of thrust faults within underground coal mines in the Appalachian Basin. He uses numericalmechanical modeling to simulate the process and understand the spatial relationship between subsurface stress perturbations and secondary fractures. The integrated field and modeling approach taken in his study will lead to better understanding of natural fracture distributions in shale oil formations. Biography Ciel is completing his master s program in geology at the University of Texas at Arlington and expects to graduate in May His current academic focus is structural geology and geomechanics with an extensive background in sedimentary geology. He completed a recent intern position with the U.S. Geological Survey where he researched source and unconventional reservoir rock characteristics of the deep downdip Tertiary section of South Louisiana. 20 FRACTURING TECHNOLOGY & PRACTICES by Omkar Jaripatke Omkar Jaripatke, Senior Staff Completion Engineer, Permian Asset Team. Pioneer Natural Resources, Irving, TX. Abstract Shale Oil production from the Permian Basin of West Texas will exceed over 1.2 Million BOPD in Success of any unconventional shale play is highly dependent on the effectiveness fracture stimulation and successful practices. Key geological and petro-physical performance drivers need to be identified prior to completion optimization. A comprehensive completion optimization plan is then needed to effectively develop the asset. The plan needs to account for testing completion parameters based on variations in geology and reservoir quality across the trend. A rigorous reservoir modeling and economic analysis is required to determine actual impact of a completion parameter on well performance. 21 Lift Mechanics of Shale Oil Production by Jeff DaCunha Jeff DaCunha, Corporate Operations Engineering Supervisor. Pioneer Natural Resources, Irving, TX. Abstract Shale oil wells typically have high initial liquid and gas rates that usually flow on their own. After some time, the well will lose its ability to produce on its own and will need some form of artificial lift. The type of artificial lift method that will be implemented depends on many different parameters ranging from wellbore deviation, gas liquid ratios, familiarity of the field and desired volumes. Multiple lifting methods may be used during the life of the well, which then begs the question of determining the appropriate time for conversion. Today`s presentation discusses the current philosophy this is used to determine the optimum design and application of artificial lift for the life of the well. Biography Jeff DaCunha is a Corporate Operations Engineering Supervisor at Pioneer Natural Resources in Irving, Texas. He has 9 years experience in design, analysis, optimization, and training in sucker rod pumping systems and associated automation. Prior to Pioneer, Jeff owned an artificial lift consulting company which specialized in analyzing rod pumped wells in Midland, Texas.
