9 Course Descriptions: Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider - Blended learning This course was designed to prepare a wide variety of healthcare professionals to provide CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relieve choking in adults and children. Participants must successfully complete the on-line assessment prior to the practical assessment dates listed below. Completion certificate from the BLS online course must be presented on practical testing dates. Monday, October 14 Monday, February 17 Basic Life Support (BLS): 1:30pm 3:30pm 1:30pm 3:30pm This course was designed by the AHA to prepare a wide variety of healthcare professionals to recognize several life threatening emergencies and provide CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. This course includes adult, child, and infant rescue skills in both the out-of-hospital and in-hospital settings. Monday, November 11 Wednesday, March 12 7:30am 4:30pm 7:30am 4:30pm Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Blended learning This AHA ACLS course is designed for healthcare providers who participate in the resuscitation of a patient to improve the quality of care provided to the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergency. Participants must successfully complete the on-line assessment prior to the practical assessment dates listed below. Completion certificate from the ACLS online course must be presented on practical testing dates. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider The AHA ACLS course is designed for healthcare providers to improve the quality of care provided to adult victims of a cardiac arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies. Learners will enhance their skills through a series of simulated cardiac and respiratory cases designed to reinforce the importance of CPR to patient survival and the importance of effective team communication during resuscitation. Prerequisites: Valid BLS-HCP card or equivalent Monday and Tuesday, November 18 and November 19 7:30am 4:30pm Sunday and Monday, March 24 and March 25 7:30am 4:30pm Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider The AHA PALS Provider course is designed to aid pediatric healthcare providers in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently evaluate and manage seriously ill infants and children. Through simulation, learners will assess for respiratory and circulatory compromise, establish treatment priorities, and intervene to stabilize the child. Case studies include management of cardiac arrest and arrhythmia, and immediate post resuscitation care. 10 Canadian Red Cross (CRC) As principal training partner with the CRC in Qatar, CNA-Q provides certification in Standard First Aid (SFA) and Emergency First Aid (EFA), Child Standard First Aid (CSFA), Medical First Responder (MFR) and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). 11 Course Descriptions: Standard First Aid Course These comprehensive First Aid and CPR techniques are for those who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the home, at work or at play. The course includes topics such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR Level C, AED, prevention of disease transmission, sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine. Saturdays, April 5, 12 and 19 8:00am 4:00pm CIEH Level 1 Award in Fire Safety Awareness This qualification will benefit anyone in a work environment, as it provides candidates with an understanding of the key principles of fire safety, including measures to prevent fires and taking action in the event that a fire does break out. CIEH Level 2 Award in Fire Safety Principles This qualification will benefit anyone in the workplace who has been appointed to carry out fire safety tasks on behalf of their employer. 16 Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) Overall Purpose of an Instructional Skills Workshop The ISW is offered within a small group setting (four to six participants) and is designed to enhance teaching effectiveness. This workshop is suitable for experienced or inexperienced educators, corporate trainers and government employees who deliver training. As a participant you will: Write learning objectives with accompanying lesson plans Practice techniques for eliciting learner participation Evaluate the learning from your lessons Experience theme sessions on such topics as learning styles, collaborative learning, classroom assessment techniques, and effective questioning methods Workshop Goals Design, develop and deliver three mini-lessons Receive and provide written and oral feedback from peers Review theory and practice about teaching and learning On completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate endorsed by the ISW International Committee. 17 The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety The International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is suitable for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organizations who make day-to-day decisions at work and need a broad understanding of health and safety issues to be able to manage risks effectively. The International General Certificate takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards, such as International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of practice, with special reference to the model proposed in the ILO s Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (ILO-OSH 2001). 21 Compensation and Employee Benefits (Prerequisite is HR Functions) This course is an introduction to compensation and employee benefits. It is concerned with the development, implementation and administration of an organization s compensation system. The emphasis is on ways in which both cash and non-cash rewards are provided to employees in exchange for performance. Wednesdays, March 12 April 30 Mondays, May 5 June 16 Human Resources Information Systems (Prerequisite is HR Functions) This course is designed to provide an introduction to the use of Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS). Emphasis is on the practical aspects of how technologies such as the Internet, intranet and web based applications influence the administration of human resource activities. Mondays, October 21 December 2 Wednesday, March 12 April 30 Health and Safety in the Workplace (Prerequisite is HR Functions) This course is an introduction to health and safety in the workplace. It emphasizes the importance of how to develop a safety culture at work, detailing the various types of workplace health and safety hazards. The legal, financial and human consequences of an unsafe workplace are presented, together with the contemporary issues in health and safety. Mondays, March 10 April 28 Financial and Management Accounting Basics This course offers a summary of financial and accounting principles, terms and calculations that are relevant for non financial employees who handle financial data. Learners will analyze and interpret commonly-used financial information in making business decisions and working more effectively with financial managers in their organization. Emphasis is on the application and understanding of financial information rather than its preparation. The course will enable learners to communicate financially-related matters more effectively, understand how performance is measured within an organization, read and use company reports and grasp other managerial accounting aspects. 22 Project Management Certificate CNA Q s Project Management Certificate is designed to enhance the skills of project team members as well as project managers in areas such as time management, communication and scope. CNA Q is a PMI Registered Education Provider; as such, students will learn how to manage projects efficiently and effectively using industry best practices according to PMBOK methodology. All PMI -related classes are taught in English. Students must have a good command of oral and written English to be successful with this program. 26 Research Assistant Certificate Individuals working on research projects need to complete many tasks to ensure overall success. Often, research projects are like running a small business, and being prepared for these challenges can be overwhelming. In this program, participants will be exposed to key aspects of research fundamentals and practices while building a portfolio for future job placement. The Research Assistant Certificate program is comprised of six courses that are taught in a collaborative and integrated format to develop teamwork among participants. These courses are: Fundamentals of Research Communications for Research Assistants Math of Data Management Qualitative Research Quantitative Research Professional Research Practice Entry requirements Must possess a university degree or college diploma from a recognized institution Must meet a minimum English language skills level assessment of IELTS 5.5 Students successfully completing the course requirements will be given the option to pursue a post-diploma.* *In order to obtain a post diploma for this program, students must complete a 350-hour work placement at an approved research facility, where they will further develop their research skills. Students opting to undertake this component are responsible for securing their work placement, and will be provided with support to find suitable opportunities to complete the research hours for completion of the diploma program. The development of written and oral skills that support each step of the research process from data gathering to report presentation will be emphasized. Learners will develop and report literature reviews, research proposals and laboratory documentation such as logbooks and standard operating procedures. Professional correspondence and guidelines for correctly citing sources and respecting intellectual property will also be examined. Tuesdays, September 17 February 25 Course Descriptions: Fundamentals of Research This course introduces the process of inquiry within the main branches of science: physical, biological and social. The principles, processes, methodologies, analytical tools and ethical considerations pertinent to research will be highlighted to provide students with the knowledge and how to skills expected of a competent consumer, and assistant producer, of research. The selection and arrangement of course topics are based on the premise that students have limited or no exposure to research methodologies and processes. At the end of the course, students will have an objective, comprehensive grounding in qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research methodology from problem articulation to published report. Sundays, September 15 February 23 Qualitative Research Qualitative research is an approach to inquiry that focuses on lived experience and the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem (adapted from Creswell, 2007). In this project-based course, learners complete a preliminary qualitative research project in order to examine the process of designing and conducting investigations within this field of inquiry. Five qualitative research approaches used across disciplines are explored: biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study. 28 Quantitative Research The focus of this hands-on course is on exploring quantitative research design and statistical analysis by use of simulation software. The underlying foundations and assumptions of quantitative methods will first be explored, followed by an examination of strategies for selecting appropriate research methods such as experimental, descriptive and correlational research. Through the formal, objective, and systematic processes of quantitative research, students will learn to utilize numerical data and statistical output to obtain information about the world. Prerequisite: Math of Data Management (or permission from the Dean) Tuesdays, March 4 - July 1 Professional Research Practice This course is designed to expose students to areas of research practice from the perspective of historical development, professionalism, lab and office administration, ethics and quality assurance. Course coverage includes the history of research development and national research initiatives, and the examination of ethical issues in research design, data collection and reporting, with topics such as confidentiality and trust, legal compliance, consent, plagiarism, intellectual property, research misconduct and codes of practice. The importance of continuing professional development in the field of research will be demonstrated by the construction of individualized professional development portfolios to be used during the research practicum. Sundays, September 22 December 8 Mondays, October 7 and November 25 Introduction to Procurement From recognizing a need, to issuing a purchase order, participants will learn the essentials of determining the quantity, specifications and price essential for procurement. This course covers a variety of procurement scenarios: repetitive purchases of production materials, procuring onetime, low-cost items, large capital goods acquisition, and securing commodities under long-term supply contracts. The opportunities and challenges of international procurement versus domestic procurement will be discussed. Participants will gain a broad understanding of the role of procurement and the various ways it can be organized. Tuesdays, September 24 December 10 Mondays, October 21 and December 2 Introduction to Logistics The interconnections between procurement, operations and transportation will be explored in this course. Participants will discuss how to balance the pressures for large order sizes to achieve low unit costs with competing pressures and to keep order sizes low to minimize warehouse space and inventory obsolescence. The options of few centralized warehouses versus multiple distributed warehouses will be addressed. Among the topics covered are forecasting, uncertainty, safety stocks and customer service requirements. Computer systems such as DRP, WMS and TMS will also be presented. Sundays, January 19 April 27 *(March 2 Holiday/April 22 Semester Break) Introduction to Operations Management This course will familiarize participants with operations in manufacturing, distribution and services organizations. The basics of location selection and layout will be discussed. This seminar provides an overview of strategic planning and the basic elements of a strategic analysis (SWOT). The Porter 5 forces model for analyzing the competitive environment will be introduced. Topics covered include critical success factors, strategic maps and company positioning, and strategic models (low-cost, differentiation, niche). Participants will discuss how to develop a strategic plan in a supply management role and the linkages between the strategic plan and a budget. Fridays, September 27 and October 4 9:00am 5:00pm Introduction to Marketing Participants will learn the role and purpose of marketing with a special emphasis on how marketing affects supply management. The differences between marketing and sales, marketing products and services, as well as B2B and B2C marketing will be addressed. Among the other subjects discussed are the marketing mix: the 4 Ps of product, pricing, place and promotion. Strategies for market leaders and market followers will also be outlined. 32 Professional Skills Seminar Descriptions: Communication and Relationship Skills Essential to the successful supply professional are the competencies of listening skills, spoken and written communication, persuasiveness and the ability to explain complex issues up and down the organization and around the supply chain. Another critical ability is building effective inter organizational supply relationships. The seminar covers how to create and deliver strong presentations and how to be professional in your spoken communications by looking at steak, sizzle and style. Non verbal communication such as appearance and body language are also explored. The seminar also offers guidance on producing clear, concise and compelling reports and written communication, and examines do s and don ts in electronic communication today.
