1 News & Views Summer Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing 2009 Get a Head Start on RN2BSN If you are considering an RN-to-BSN program, you have most likely already completed the following general education credits as a part of your diploma nursing program: English, Mathematics, General and Developmental Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology. Most RN-to-BSN programs require additional general education credits such as Ethics,Communications, Fine Arts, Statistics, History/Humanities, and additional coursework in Biology and Chemistry. Check with the school of your choice for more information as each RN-to- BSN program has its own unique requirements Employee of the Year Maria Vasquez was honored as the 2008 Employee of the Year by her supportive and outgoing attitude. She is known to always go the extra mile to help her coworkers and does a great job to smoothly coordinate the annual graduation ceremony. Faculty Spotlight Barbara Fitzgerald has served at the School for more than 8 years, teaching courses at both the first and third levels of the curriculum. She has more than 20 years experience in pediatric nursing, mostly in intensive care. Barbara received her BSN from the Medical College of Virginia and her MSN from Old Dominion University. Barbara really loves teaching at a faith-based school that mirrors her own values and promotes excellence in nursing care at the bedside. She is always impressed with the ongoing transformation of each group of new nursing students into graduates prepared for licensure and their first professional nursing positions. Barbara often reminds students that they will never know it all and that the key to professional growth lies in being open and flexible to any opportunities on their horizon for further growth and development. She feels this is good advice for alumni as well and extends to one and all alike her warm greetings and her sincere Irish blessing May the road rise to meet you and may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Connections Recent Graduate Survey If you have graduated between 10/1/07 and 12/31/08, we would like to hear from you and invite you to complete the online Recent Graduate Survey. Once logged in, click the Recent Graduate link and complete the survey. The survey results are anonymous and provide the school with much-needed data to support our accreditation process. 2 News & Views Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing Dean s Corner Summer is certainly here, and even though the normal academic pace is slower, there has been much behind-the-scenes activity. In our journey towards becoming a BSN program, the School must receive approval by the State Council of Higher Education, the Virginia Board of Nursing and two new accreditation bodies. The new curriculum for the BSN program is complete and was approved by Board of Nursing in July. The State Council acknowledged the new program as well. One of the accreditation bodies conducted an initial survey visit in June. Notification regarding the new institutional accreditation is pending. An additional approval for the BSN program must be obtained in October before students can be recruited and admitted. What does that mean for current students enrolled in our diploma program? Students in the diploma program will not be affected by these changes and will graduate with a diploma in nursing. The BSN program will be a separate program. In the future, the School will also offer a RN-to-BSN program that our graduates may want to attend to further their education. These are truly exciting times. Susan Bodin, EdD RN, BC Dean, BSMSON Service Excellence It takes many talented professionals to operate a school of nursing and Crystal Filer-Ogden is one of them. She has been a financial aid director for more than 20 years, with the first half of her career at a public community college before transitioning to the private sector. Crystal has a BS in Business Finance and an MBA in Management and has translated her education and expertise into a keen stewardship of Bon Secours resources, keeping the School in strict compliance with constantly changing federal regulations. Her passion for being good help to our nursing students is unparalleled. Crystal s philosophy is that if students have the will to go to school, she will find them resources so they can concentrate on their studies without financial worries. Since joining the School in 2006, Crystal has tripled the number of outside scholarships and has also instituted a Federal Work Study program and book vouchers to provide additional support for students during their studies. She not only has a passion to serve our new and returning students by providing them with a very competitive financial aid package, but also is committed to Bon Secours employees and community members who seek general financial aid advice. Crystal can be contacted at crystal_filer-ogden@bshsi.org. Reunion News Planning a reunion? Contact carol_greco@bshsi.org for your class mailing list.

6 News & Views Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing 2009 Mission Trip In May 2009, this year s mission team traveled to the Dominican Republic to bring good help to those in need. Ashley Apple, Edward Dankyi, Megan Lassiter, Ann Pettigrew, Beth Reynolds, Rebecca Smith, Elizabeth Suskind were accompanied by leaders Patricia Kinser (faculty) and Amy Feurer (faculty), Kathy Faw ( 05) & Chris DeWilde ( 08). They provided care for more than 600 patients in the rural mountainous region of the country. Each day they traveled to a different village and set up clinics, providing care to young and old alike. The students had wonderful hands-on experiences and provided health care and education on hygiene, nutrition & hydration to parasites, hypertension, and depression. They also spent an afternoon playing with children in a local orphanage and through hugs, games, and water balloons transcended the need for a common language! Preparation begins as the group packages supplies prior to the trip.
