1 Peru 14. July to 29. August 2011 by Jens Ole Byskov I was in Peru 25 year back in time, and I always wanted to return to this beautiful and interesting country. In my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful and varied in the world. Usually I arrange trips myself without guides and on public transport. But this time I decided to have a guide and car in a few of the weeks. It was certainly not cheap, but it saved me some good time, and the guides knew, where the birds were found. I arranged 25 days with Kolibri Expedition in Lima. Price depends on the number of people going. The rest of time I was on my own. In the 6 weeks of active birdwatching I saw or heard 820 different species. 14/7 Pelagic tour with Kolibri Expedition from Callao to the sea on the westside af San Lorenzo Island. Most birds seen were breeding birds from the islands. 15/7 16/7 Flight to Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios province in southeastern Peru. Both days birdwatching around town and at Infierno also close to town with guide from Kolibri Expedition. 17/7 22/7 2 hours drive to Rio Piedra and 3 hours by boat upriver to Piedra Lodge to exellent amazonian forest. Absolutely a top birdwatching place. 23/7 By taxi from Puerto Maldonado to Iberia close to the Brazilian border. Still with guide from Kolibri Expedition. Scrub, bamboo and farmland. 24/7 25/7 At Infierno with good forest. Last day flight back to Lima. 26/7 Visit to Santa Eulalia Valley near Lima. Gardens, scrub, woodland and fields. Late afternoon drive to Huanuco arriving late in the night. Start on an 8 days tour with Kolibri Expedition to central Peru. 27/7 From Huanuco all day visit to Carpish Mountain, Carpish Tunnel and Paty trail. Cloud forests. 28/7 From Huanuco all day visit to Bosque Unchog. Elfin Forest. Not a good day. Not many birds seen. 29/7 Travelday Huanuco Junin Satipo. Stops at polylepis forest in Huanuco and at lakeshore at Junin Lake. 30/7 1/8 3 days birdwatching different places on Satipo Road. Last afternoon driving to Tarma with several stops along the road. 2/8 From Tarma to Lima with many stops and visiting sideroads. Puna grassland and bogs. Arid montane scrub. 3/8 Visiting Pantanas de Villa in Lima and Salinas area 70 km south of Lima. Seashore, desert and coastal lagunas and scrub. 4/8 All day driving from Lima to Chiclayo with only stops at Lomas de Lachay and a coastal lagune. Start on an 8 days tour with Kolibri Expedition to northern Peru. Mostly deserts.

On the way to Abra Patricia visiting a butterfly reserve. Tropical deciduous forest and lowland scrub. 8/8 10/8 Abra Patricia area. Cloud forest, subtropical forest and upper tropical forest. Overnight at Afluente. Exellent area. 11/8 Driving from Abra Malaga to Tarapoto with various stops. Especially in Moyobamba where a sanctuary for hummingbirds was visited. 18 different hummingbird species seen at feeders. End of tour with Kolibri Expedition. 12/8 13/8 No birdwatching. Staying in Tarapoto. 14/8 Rio Mayo at Juan Guerra. Not a good place any more. From here no guide but rented a car with driver. 15/8 The Tunnelforest east of Tarapoto. Patches of upper tropical forest. 16/8 17/8 Morro de Calzada near Moyobamba. Upper tropical forest on mountain. Also tropical deciduous forest in outskirts of Moyobamba. 18/8 Back to Aguas Verde and Abra Patricia all day.
